[identity profile] waves-of-light.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] omonatheydid

You all I know I love a good flashback! I’ve been doing the Flashback Fridays since 2016 now, and I wanted to try something a little different. So here’s another throwback series of posts, this time about our first loves. On the first of the month I’ll make a post with a different first love theme. Or maybe I’ll switch out one of Flashback Friday posts for one of these…I haven’t decided yet. 5 week months can be a pain and it would make it easier on me. But I digress...

I guess we’ll kick it off with the basics. First K-Pop song that you loved. The first song that you really, really, REALLY LOVED. The one that you think back on now like “yup, that’s the one”. That song that sent you down this K-Pop rabbit hole and is what probably ultimately brought you here today.

For me, it was D.J DOC’s “Dance With DOC” back in 1997. Jesus Christ 1997, I didn’t think it was that long ago wtf. I remember watching their performances on the music show on MBC (it wasn’t called Music Core back then), and I remember doing the dance at the Hwang’s Christmas party later that year. I’m thinking back on it now, and we must have been watching Gayo, since it was the end of year lol. This song wasn’t as super popular as some of their other songs, so I don’t hear it that often. But when I do, I get a little tickle in my tummy.

I love how laid back and relaxed things were back then. That’s singer/actor Lim Chang Jung with the video camera dressed in black, and Jinusean in blue. Just hanging out on stage during the performance lol. Like, no biggie.

What was your first love, Omona?

That was a good time in kpop. When everything was easy and carefree.

My first was Super Junior Don't Don, U, and Happiness. I think I watched those music videos a million times. My little teenage self was SO in love. My parents had no idea where this kpop love came from or what to do about it. Well, that "phase" has suck with me for over 10 years now.

Shinee's Lucifer is def the one that made me go down the rabbit hole.

First kpop artist I ever had on my ipod was fucking Seungri with Strong baby (THE IRONY UGH) but then didn't go down the rabbit hole until a few years later.

Lol Strong Baby is also one of the songs I started from when getting into kpop... let's sulk about it together XD

Not exactly the best timing lol so I'll put it under a cut but my first love was Haru Haru (https://youtu.be/MzCbEdtNbJ0) by BIG BANG.
A friend had sent me kpop videos to watch (I was already aware of it thanks to cassio friends blasting Mirotic by TVXQ whenever they could), I started with Strong Baby (rip my taste, teen me was naive) which I jammed to, and the next suggestion was Haru Haru which made me really love the group. After that, I fell into the rabbit hole and watched whatever kpop video Youtube would recommand me for the whole night lol.
BIG BANG got me into kpop in 2009 and I kept really following them until 2012 I think? then they fell out of my favourite list, but I still cherished them for a few years. Obviously a very different situation now...

As for women, the classic mix of :
- Noboby (https://youtu.be/QZBn1e9pr2Q) (first choreo I attempted to learn!) & Tell Me (https://youtu.be/BlHv3BbBv6A)
- Genie (https://youtu.be/z3RTc-8J3CU) and Gee (https://youtu.be/U7mPqycQ0tQ) (though back then I disliked Gee and only tolerated it in karaoke because it's fun to sing when you're drunk lol)
- Fire (https://youtu.be/ISEoXdHb4W4) (I GO BY THE NAME OF CL OF 2NE1 ahhhh omg what an iconic intro)
- Energetic (https://youtu.be/qE05Bv1e_fo) and Eat You Up (https://youtu.be/a94oNlx4CQ8) (how I got introduced to BoA lmao I still jam to them!)
- U Go Girl (https://youtu.be/v8Y3NL1KeNQ) and Saturday Night (https://youtu.be/Gwvopq0u_BQ) (my friends kept comparing new soloists to Hyori and Dambi so ofc I got into them)
Lol those songs were BIG reasons I started getting into kpop!

Also listened to Super Junior and 2PM.

Hahaha the nostalgia :D

I became aware of K-Pop's existence through Rain's "It's Raining" MV being played at our local TV station when it was released (yes, I am old). However, SHINee' Replay and Jjong's cover of Sisqo's Incomplete that sealed the deal for me to stan Kpop

My first love is also my first kpop song! And that’s KARA’s Honey!! The moment I discovered it, I was in my jpop music phase and I was look oooooh, whose this? It made me think of anime songs but they had a very different vibe than any of the groups I knew from jpop (tbh even though I was deep in kpop, I never learned much about the members - like SweetS, I loved a song or two but know nothing about them...)
And I had it on repeat on YouTube and remember downloading through those old school LJ downloading community. I’ll never forget that experience, it was so special to me

SNSD’s Oh! too, I had a similar ‘who are they???? This is so cool!!!’ experience with that song, 18 year old me was obsessed

Important as well to me is 2PM’s Heartbeat, Brown Eyed Girl’s Come Closer, 2NE1’s Fire, And KARA’s Lupin. There were also some of my first songs that made me realize I was officially a kpop fan with how much I replayed them

I think the first Kpop song I liked was KISS' Because I'm A Girl, probably also due to my affinity for dramatic as hell and tragic MVs:

I didn't really check out other Kpop songs at the time, it was only after watching DBSK's Jpop MVs on Crunchyroll (of all places lol) that I fell down the rabbit hole and started checking out Kpop as a whole.

First song I ever listened to was S.E.S' Dreams Come True through a fanmade anime vid (I think it was a Fushigi Yuugi vid lol). I was around 7 years old and loved it, but little ignorant me thought Korean was a weird sounding Japanese dialect or something. It wasn't until years later that I discovered the group, after I officially joing the kpop fandom.

Used to listen to BoA before I discovered kpop since she sang InuYasha's ending song and fell for her voice. I also thought she was Japanese and had an "oh shit!" realization after getting into kpop.

First official bump with kpop was through Gee. My cousin wanted to learn an easy dance for a school competition or something and google led me to it. I hated it at first, but learned the dance and then couldn't get the song out of my head.
10 years later and it's still gee gee gee, baby baby.

I discovered kpop through Rain and Ninja assassin. I googled him and spent hours watching him dance shirtless on YouTube.
So I’m going to say the first song I fell in love with was either Nan or Love story by Rain.

I knew about kpop for some time but the one that really got me into it and I loved- it’s prob not even considered kpop but it was Park Hyo Shin’s Castle of Zoltar. The song’s lyrics really helped with my depression back then. And he is still my ultimate bias since day one. A dream of mine is to be in one of his concerts some day.

I have a tattoo of a star on my wrist because of this song. Every time I watch the video it makes me cry cause the message is there.

Covered by dance groups everywhere, WEDDING DRESS BY TAEYANG!

My cousin made me listen to Shinhwa's Brand New, Super Junior's Sorry Sorry, and SNSD's Gee, and I admitted they were catchy, but Wedding Dress is what shooketh me enough to actively search out kpop on my own.

I first discovered Bi and then DBSK5 (I loved Rising Sun, Phantom, Million Men, O, etc.), but the one of the first songs that stuck with me and really pulled me in was “Let It Rain” by Epik High. This performance in particular...

However, Shinee was the first group I remember debuting. I still adore their debut to this day and the first follow up, Love Like Oxygen, was my jam. ❤️

Oh gosh, it was probably HOT's Outside Castle. I was so entranced with the over-the-topness of it but I was hooked, I ended up cutting my hair like Woo Hyuk from that MV. Sucked though because of course, soon after that they disbanded, but at that point I had fallen down the rabbit hole.

That song is my fave from them, i love that they put sign language on their choreo. The fact Hee jun and Woohyuk did the choreo of this song and others is so nice, to me they will always be two of the best dancers in kpop tbh.

Which also reminds me that recently, Dreamcatcher's fan song Over The Sky also incorporated sign language in it.

I wanna say it was BoA "No. 1" (though it might have been "Atlantis Princess" which was the year after). I really only knew her back then and didn't get into anyone else (DBSK and Shinhwa) until about 2004.

This might be my first love too, since I was obsessed with this back then and still love it! But it was the Japanese version I found, I didn’t know of the Korean version till much later so I guess I can’t call it a kpop first love

(Same with her English album - I listened to that on my iPod sooooo much but that too I found that way before discovering the world of kpop, so my brain doesn’t recognize/categorize it as that. I see it under the kpop releases when I googled it, and I’m thinking is it more so a Korean artist releasing Pop music...in America?)
