First of the Month First Loves
2019-04-01 01:40 pm
You all I know I love a good flashback! I’ve been doing the Flashback Fridays since 2016 now, and I wanted to try something a little different. So here’s another throwback series of posts, this time about our first loves. On the first of the month I’ll make a post with a different first love theme. Or maybe I’ll switch out one of Flashback Friday posts for one of these…I haven’t decided yet. 5 week months can be a pain and it would make it easier on me. But I digress...
I guess we’ll kick it off with the basics. First K-Pop song that you loved. The first song that you really, really, REALLY LOVED. The one that you think back on now like “yup, that’s the one”. That song that sent you down this K-Pop rabbit hole and is what probably ultimately brought you here today.
For me, it was D.J DOC’s “Dance With DOC” back in 1997. Jesus Christ 1997, I didn’t think it was that long ago wtf. I remember watching their performances on the music show on MBC (it wasn’t called Music Core back then), and I remember doing the dance at the Hwang’s Christmas party later that year. I’m thinking back on it now, and we must have been watching Gayo, since it was the end of year lol. This song wasn’t as super popular as some of their other songs, so I don’t hear it that often. But when I do, I get a little tickle in my tummy.
I love how laid back and relaxed things were back then. That’s singer/actor Lim Chang Jung with the video camera dressed in black, and Jinusean in blue. Just hanging out on stage during the performance lol. Like, no biggie.
What was your first love, Omona?

Date: 2019-04-01 09:54 pm (UTC)A friend had sent me kpop videos to watch (I was already aware of it thanks to cassio friends blasting Mirotic by TVXQ whenever they could), I started with Strong Baby (rip my taste, teen me was naive) which I jammed to, and the next suggestion was Haru Haru which made me really love the group. After that, I fell into the rabbit hole and watched whatever kpop video Youtube would recommand me for the whole night lol.
BIG BANG got me into kpop in 2009 and I kept really following them until 2012 I think? then they fell out of my favourite list, but I still cherished them for a few years. Obviously a very different situation now...
As for women, the classic mix of :
- Noboby (https://youtu.be/QZBn1e9pr2Q) (first choreo I attempted to learn!) & Tell Me (https://youtu.be/BlHv3BbBv6A)
- Genie (https://youtu.be/z3RTc-8J3CU) and Gee (https://youtu.be/U7mPqycQ0tQ) (though back then I disliked Gee and only tolerated it in karaoke because it's fun to sing when you're drunk lol)
- Fire (https://youtu.be/ISEoXdHb4W4) (I GO BY THE NAME OF CL OF 2NE1 ahhhh omg what an iconic intro)
- Energetic (https://youtu.be/qE05Bv1e_fo) and Eat You Up (https://youtu.be/a94oNlx4CQ8) (how I got introduced to BoA lmao I still jam to them!)
- U Go Girl (https://youtu.be/v8Y3NL1KeNQ) and Saturday Night (https://youtu.be/Gwvopq0u_BQ) (my friends kept comparing new soloists to Hyori and Dambi so ofc I got into them)
Lol those songs were BIG reasons I started getting into kpop!
Also listened to Super Junior and 2PM.
Hahaha the nostalgia :D

Date: 2019-04-01 10:22 pm (UTC)And I had it on repeat on YouTube and remember downloading through those old school LJ downloading community. I’ll never forget that experience, it was so special to me
SNSD’s Oh! too, I had a similar ‘who are they???? This is so cool!!!’ experience with that song, 18 year old me was obsessed
Important as well to me is 2PM’s Heartbeat, Brown Eyed Girl’s Come Closer, 2NE1’s Fire, And KARA’s Lupin. There were also some of my first songs that made me realize I was officially a kpop fan with how much I replayed them

Date: 2019-04-01 10:29 pm (UTC)I didn't really check out other Kpop songs at the time, it was only after watching DBSK's Jpop MVs on Crunchyroll (of all places lol) that I fell down the rabbit hole and started checking out Kpop as a whole.

Date: 2019-04-01 11:48 pm (UTC)Used to listen to BoA before I discovered kpop since she sang InuYasha's ending song and fell for her voice. I also thought she was Japanese and had an "oh shit!" realization after getting into kpop.
First official bump with kpop was through Gee. My cousin wanted to learn an easy dance for a school competition or something and google led me to it. I hated it at first, but learned the dance and then couldn't get the song out of my head.
10 years later and it's still gee gee gee, baby baby.

Date: 2019-04-02 12:32 am (UTC)My cousin made me listen to Shinhwa's Brand New, Super Junior's Sorry Sorry, and SNSD's Gee, and I admitted they were catchy, but Wedding Dress is what shooketh me enough to actively search out kpop on my own.

Date: 2019-04-02 08:28 am (UTC)(Same with her English album - I listened to that on my iPod sooooo much but that too I found that way before discovering the world of kpop, so my brain doesn’t recognize/categorize it as that. I see it under the kpop releases when I googled it, and I’m thinking is it more so a Korean artist releasing Pop music...in America?)
