Seungri Booked On Charges Of Allegedly Violating Anti-Prostitution Law

The police has issued a search warrant to search Club Arena to find evidence on the claims that BIGBANG’s Seungri was involved in providing sexual escort services to foreign investors.

On March 10 at 11 a.m. KST, approximately 20 police officers from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency began to search Club Arena for evidence. No further information on the process has been released yet.

Previously on February 26, SBS funE released text messages that were allegedly shared between Seungri, CEO Yoo of Yuri Holdings, and an employee in 2015. The contents of the messages implied that they were hiring prostitutes at Club Arena (a club located in the Gangnam district) for foreign business investors, and both YG and Yuri Holdings denied the claims in separate statements. One day later, Seungri underwent questioning at the police station and shared his willingness to cooperate with any further questioning.

Updated March 10 at 3:40 p.m. KST:

Seungri has been booked on charges of violating the law on the punishment of prostitution mediation and other related actions. He will now be treated as a suspect in future investigations.

A source from the police stated, “We booked Seungri and changed his status to that of a suspect in order to issue a search and seizure warrant and clear [Seungri] of the suspicions [surrounding him].”

The police has also booked three to four other people who were in the KakaoTalk group chat and are currently investigating them.

Meanwhile, the police began searching Club Arena at 11 a.m. on March 10 and ended their search at 2 p.m. KST. It was reported that they obtained data related to the charges made on Seungri about providing sexual escort services to foreign investors, but no further details have been revealed.

"This is no longer handled by the Gangnam Station of the Seoul Police, which were accused of turning a blind eye to the club activities. Instead, it is handled by the Special Crime Squad.

Other sources say a total of around 60,000 messages were sent to the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission, which is a separate investigative agency which is not part of the Seoul Police and instead are directly under the Prime MInister (basically the VP) - think of this as basically the FBI (something a bit weaker maybe) being involved. Not all of these have been sent to the police.

Basically this means that the informant has bypassed the police, to a more central agency (aka "federal" in the context of the US), and the Seoul police has a fire under their ass to actually start investigations.

The Prime Minister today mentioned this case in the National Assembly- his actual quotes "An Assault case in a club in Gangnam-Gu is now uncovering allegations of drug distribution, sexual assault, corruption between the police and its owners. I wish that the police take this as an insult to its own honor, and that they go through a thorough investigation to the full extent of the law. I hope that the investigators will keep in mind what will happen if the suspicions of illegal activities do not fully get resolved as they carry on the investigations"

This basically means this is turning into a bigger story than Seungri himself - the current administration was elected b/c of the corruption within the Park administration (who is now in jail) and heavy anti-corruption measures (including jailing 2 ex-presidents, the former head of the supreme court, the defense minister, the chief of staff of the military and the korean head of the NIS (aka CIA)). THey have every incentive to investigate this further now that allegations of corruption of the police have been brought up. Seungri is just a celeb involved in a bigger political case. The Prime Minister never even named Seungri direclty - the focus is entirely on the possible corruption of the police."
