Context: Their song Rooftop has been steadily moving up the k-charts the past couple weeks. It came out on Jan 2nd and didn't even crack the top 1000 on Melon. Currently it's number 1.

people were asking in that last music show post what was the point of even promoting on music shows as a smaller group...this is one reason why.

i know what you mean! it's of more value to them, big groups from big companies are not (much/as) worried about their future and for small groups from v. small (broke) companies it can make a HUGE difference so it's definitely more special to me
from big companies it's no surprise anymore, it's almost certain that when X performs they will 'automatically' get an award, which is what it is i mean they also work their butt off, but these small groups idk...... i totally feel you

Yeah I feel it, big groups are basically guaranteed wins either shortly after debut or a year or so in. Big 3 + BH. I get so happy seeing older groups from small companies finally take home wins, same with nugus.

I don’t think being on music shows played as big a role in this one instance. The band underwent sajaegi accusations too so it was probably more of a Shaun and Woody situation than appearing on a music show with such low viewership.

That wasn’t what I meant in regard to my note but you’re free to disagree. I wasn’t talking about how them promoting lead to the win but rather music shows letting them have a moment as a group to be happy for what they’ve acheived, even if it doesn’t mean much in comparison to what bigger groups are winning.

Basically the point was that even though it's expensive to promote on these shows and there's very little compensation, acts do it because even one win can mean they'll be able to charges thousands more for every festival/event appearance. Even if N.Flying is a one hit wonder, those can charge a lot more than 0-hit wonders.

But the direct correlation of a music show appearance to a Melon #1 is pretty low. The song is a viral hit and it is winning a music show award after it became a hit.

op you are right, promoting on music shows maybe wasn't /the/ reason but it was a catalyst because people from other fandoms were enjoying the song and got interested in it. even if they wrapped up promotions long time ago but it was what caught others' attention. tho i think all of the covers were main reason of this kind of steady rise @ melon. i'm still cackling at the fact that full hour youtube loop from an obvious intl kpopper is getting comments only from koreans.
i'm quite glad about them finally getting that 'big break'. fnc doesn't even know their name at this point, does no promo and allowed to release self-written song because this is how much they 'care'. "the real" is my #1 jam, wish it went viral lol.

tbh biggest "why would they" for me is that they just got a member kicked out because of sexual harassment. they were never popular and lbr this should've been last nail in their coffin. i was expecting disbandment within a year.

Purple boy crying is breaking my heart! This is so nice, it's great seeing a group win when it obviously means a lot to them. They must have been having a terrible time not just with their shitty bassist but also with the backburner treatment they got from FNC all those years (thought it would've picked up after the greatness that is Hot Potato but nope), it's really inspiring that they managed to get this practically on their own after kind of being written off years after debut. I hope they can keep going and maintain popularity as a band on without needing help from their company.

Jaehyun sobbing was breaking my heart, he was shaking so much holding the trophy. He's such a cheerful goofball so seeing him lose it like this was so unexpected. I'm so glad they got this win and that Rooftop has given them a new shine, their music is so good.

Sad fact, Jaehyun'solder sister, Jaekyung from Rainbow never got the first win with her group. Glad at least one of them got to experience this.

They've always been good, but I think it took them a while to find their musical style. It almost seems like with each of their releases they try a different genre in the hopes one will stick. I really thought Hot Potato was going to be their big break tbh, not this, but whatever works.

Especially with how low maintenance and cheap a band group must be in comparison to a normal idol group - they're entirely self-sustainable in terms of skills at this point as they can maintain their instrument training themselves and don't need ongoing dance lessons or choreography. They would do really well with cute homegrown social media content.
