Hot Take: Monsta X's rap line is the best and most versatile of current active groups, even in spite of the cringe lyrics. RBB was one of the best gg concepts in the past few years.

Very Mild Take: Top Group xx is overrated/Nugu group xx is underrated.

hot take: zico is no longer the most talented or charismatic member of block b. he got a headstart on the others due to his past but nowadays i honestly prefer what p.o's put out and kyung/the bastarz members are better performers

more since I started this and love roasting my own faves:

NCT - Jaehyun should have debuted as a member of rap line. His rap delivery and tone is better than some of the other rappers.

NCT - 7th Sense was the best debut songs for a bg in the past 5 years.

EXO - SM fucked up releasing Lucky One and Monster as a double title. They should have held on to Monster for the fall repackage.

EXO - As the season of their variety show goes on the lower chanyeol falls on my faves list. something about how he is in this is so off-putting.

CUBE - Cube chose money from P101 over the guaranteed success of PTG by giving up Energetic. that song is bigger than the artist and would have pushed them out of middle ground territory...especially then followed up by SHINE. However, they were right to give La Vie En Rose up because that comeback would have only been popular because it was a P101.

CUBE - Hui could easily be a huge solo star but CUBE won't debut him (or Kino). Instead they'll push Guanlin even though his rapping is just Wooseok cosplay. :S their subunits gonna be one long monotonous drone of a song. (yes I'm a bitter triple H fan I know this)

General:

3rd gen groups being more performance and dance lead is disappointing because it's at the expense of casting and training great vocalists.

Dreamcatcher - the linkin park of kpop (that's a compliment). I'm waiting for them to cover numb.

MX - I said what I said.

LOONA: I like LOONA more when they were a rumoured front for arms dealers however I'm still curious about what their next round of subunit releases will be like.

TWICE - Chaeyoung shows exactly what badgirl/cutesy dual concepts should look like. I wish she got more credit.

jaehyun, doyoung, and taeil starting off run back 2 u!!! 🔥🔥🔥is top tier for any rap moment in nct except lucas' boss verse and a couple of mark parts. honestly i don't think taeyong does much w rapping... and i think jaehyun's vocal tone is very important to diversifying the group but it's funny cuz he's so confident and good at everything and then he sings live and it's like the undercurrent of insecurity... i don't have music theory knowledge but ppl say he's not singing in his range and i'm like oh i definitely feel that

Hot take - I'm REALLY sick of people forgetting that Wonder Girls essentially popularized the modern girl group structure for their generation and the next one. The hook song came back due to them and you damn well know we wouldn't have the 'several vocalists/one rapper' shake-out without their success with it. They are GLOBALLY iconic, still love each other & deserve to be more revered.

i think momo is very far from being the best female kpop dancer of this generation as fans always say. i think she's just okay

another hot take (?) is that bts jin is the second best singer in the group (he's usually placed much lower)

and hmm ... nct mark is the best male rapper sm has at the moment. also yuta deserves even more singing lines and center parts, he's improved so much.

i don't like that kuanlin is in cube's new unit, i don't think he's a particularly good rapper and he has next to no stage presence. he really hasn't improved that much during his wanna one days

Mark is Sm's best rapper but almost by default, no? I feel like he has no serious competition for that title. I think Chanyeol is OK, Taeyong is better as a vocalist but i love his stupid vocal fry, and Sehun is so awfule he could be in Got7's rap line (although he at least delivers iconic so-bad-they're-good bars).

Lifting shirts/taking off shirts doesn’t add much to boy group performances. It’s not exciting and it sometimes cuts up the flow of a performance. On a related note, I also don’t care about abs. If you’re proud of your body and want to show it off (although it’s often a company decision than a personal one), go for it! I just don’t think it elevates the performance in any way.

Eau de Vixx was the best bg album from 2018, I still stand by this. Bop after bop. Too bad it was slept on since I’m p sure VIXX is over, oh well.

I love Taemin as much as everyone else, but even tho he improved a hundred fold, I still think his vocals are whatever, nothing to write home about tbh. He is the whole package and can perform the hell out of anything he does, his music is great, but I really just think his airy ass vocals are a bit overrated. Not sure if this is a hot take or not but I usually just see universal praise.

@ OP re: MX rap line, something about the way IM raps sometimes bugs me but I like Jooheon. I actually really do like BTS rapline a lot, esp Suga and J Hope. Block B rapline was great too but that’s a given. There are just so many shitty rappers, I wish they’d stop putting people in those roles just to have a rap verse every song. We can have pure pop kpop groups, it’s fine. I’d prefer it.

On that note, I think BTS has one of the worst vocal lines rn tho, phew the struggle notes live. It’s more evident now than ever since their music went super pop. I don’t think they have one decent live vocalist personally. They sound fine in recording tho.

I am tired of a lot of the big groups, for once in my life I’m really enjoying all the nugus rn.

This is not a hot take but whatever lol I feel like these days visuals have become so much more important in kpop than they ever were before. Everywhere I look it's just visuals visuals visuals, 'visual king/queen!!!!' meanwhile everything else seems to have become less exciting/less good. It's like everyone in the group has to be an absolute ~visual~ member before being able to be anything else.

Pop in general has always been about visuals but I think kpop has completely become about visuals— in the way you are mentioning with and idol’s faces and bodies, and also visual aesthetic of MVs, outfits, etc. The focus has shifted completely and vocals come 3rd or 4th at this point which is laughable. It’s more generic than ever, which goes along with the above comment about kpop dying in 2012.
