didn't realize there would be a huge influx of posts at the same time.

For me it felt like ear worm factor died off in May this year. there were a series of great songs even people who weren't fans of the groups liked and then in after May there hasn't rly been a song that exploded like Love Scenario, Boom Boom, LATATA, or Shine. Not that there weren't great songs put out but nothing that like transcended "if you already check out this group you'll rly love this"

Also, MVs I think agencies need to start hiring outside the small pool of directors, DOPS and art directors they've used on big name projects. hire more women cowards

i started paying attention to kpop again a few months ago only to find that my fav girl groups (fx, wonder girls, orange caramel) are all dead. so i’m missing a girl group that can fill the hole in my heart that they left and so far only red velvet comes close.

as for what’s overdone: songs having instrumental breakdowns instead of a proper chorus. it’s the laziest shit and it’s been a trend for years now. please make it stop, i’m begging.

I got into kpop in 2009 so a lot of groups are missing, either disbanded or on hiatus. I wish f(x) would have been able to comeback another time but I don't have many hopes by now.
At least I'm into a lot of younger groups so it helps, but still, it hurts a bit.

About songs themselves, I wish we had more choruses. I don't mind instrumental drops - there are still new songs with this kind of structure that I enjoy - but I feel like the ratio between those, and big pop chorus is unbalanced. It's tied with the tropical house/etc trend we're still seeing. It was responsible for really good songs for me but I'm ready for the next trend.
Also I miss when choruses were sung by the whole group together. There are still some (some parts Lovelyz's That Day comes to mind for example) but not as much as it used to? at least among the (many) girl groups I follow.

Finally, about concepts, I'm not 100% behind the current trend of girl crush concepts. I usually really enjoy those and I'm glad that groups, especially newer ones, are able to explore different kind of concepts and still be successful (which makes comeback more varied after a wave of cute concepts). But a lot of those feels like gimmick or still have enough cuteness/preppy femininity. I miss the unapologetic fierce concepts like 2NE1/f(x)'s Red Light or empowered womanhood like Brown Eyed Girls. Even the confident/royalty attitude of SNSD's The Boys
I'm still hopeful! some of the groups I follow are slowly moving to more mature concepts, or diving head first into it like APink (still one of my favourite comeback this year!). Also soloists like BoA or Sunmi are killing it

i've realized in the last year that my girl group stanning has become empty and i'm cycling back to boy groups. there are so many huge girl groups and i feel uncomfortable w the "cuteness" of it all. and i'm usually the one defending them with everything! it's not cute concepts that bother me, it's just the personality that has to be performed for the male gaze... oh another girl that fits the beauty standard that's giggling and pretending to kiss her other member and playing up some hosts and wearing another fricken pleated skirt. i'm so tired!

but at the same time it's not even that i've been paying attn to more boy groups, actually my only priorities have been astro, nct 127, and shinee. maybe i'm winding down my kpop pool in general and will stop paying visual attention (mvs, music shows, etc.) to everything except them while still trying to at least listen to everyone else's releases

For me, what's missing is depth to the music honestly. It really is hard for me to get in to kpop when so much emphasis is placed on the vanity aspect of it and not on the actual content/talent of the music as a whole. Not only that but a lot of it just seems so...manufactured/fake? I don't really know how else to put it. The entire culture of fandoms need a massive overhaul, I'm so tired of the drama, fighting, hatred, and stalking that I see people talk about, and I'm not even involved in it. The only group I try to keep up with is Seventeen, and I feel exhausted just looking at some of the stuff going on in the fandoms of other groups. How do people have so much free time/energy to spend? I dunno.

I'm missing Seventeen getting the recognition from the international community that they truly deserve.

Please for the love of god let the women wear PANTS. I'm so tired of the tiny dresses, itty bitty skirts, and super high heels. LET THEM WEAR NORMAL CLOTHING. No one should have to dance in heels and have to worry about fans trying to catch upskirt underwear shots.

i feel this. not that the manufacturing is a secret but now there's so much going on, it feels like a heavy layer of desperation for groups to make it with so many of them giving the same things. it's an endless churning out. i want to stop the faucet. and no critical thought to is there a point or what should we expect from them like the definitions of talent and skill and most of all artistry. the difference between being an exceptional piece of art that holds up vs simply being a collection of enioyable songs. ugh so many thoughts

As a girl group fan there's nothing really missing for me. Nothing that I can think 'I wish I'd had that this year'. Other than Minzy!!!!! not having a comeback but I know that that's because she's been focusing on her final year of university and now that she's jumped straight back into touring and has new music lined up I'm really happy. Take your time boo!

I've enjoyed this year a lot, seeing groups take on new challenges and seeing strong newcomers bring new genres or bring back concepts that kpop had been lacking. We've seen the female-idol-gone-solo trend really pick up which I think has been another really good thing, allowing younger groups to gain more success while allowing older groups to continue promoting if they want. I think we'll also see some low/mid-tier few groups that had stagnated, either due to mismanagement or just general lack of success, disband (e.g Berry Good, Pristin, Sonamoo), which will also open up room for the aforementioned groups to expand and grow. I'm a little intrigued to see if we get a few re-debuts a la Dreamcatcher. I think Pristin's the most obvious one, but I think other agencies might now be considering it.

Mostly I've enjoyed the year, I haven't been keeping up with kpop as much as I have in the past because my life is a lot busier now, but most of my favourite groups have delivered and I'm never going to look at one comeback I didn't like and assume the worst.

My specific highlights are:
- Cheetah finally getting her full album of EIGHTEEN TRACKS!!!!
- Momoland finally breaking out
- April - The Blue Bird
- (g)-idle's debut + activities
- GWSN's debut
- Weki Meki finally beginning to find a balance between their quirky sound + something public friendly
- CLC - Black Dress
- Oh!GG
- Wow Thing
- After School's Kaeun finally getting out of the dungeon! I need to make a post about her + Yunjin's vlive's which have been vastly more popular than most other vlives from pledis artists
- Weirdly I was glad to see Tahiti disband; while I've loved a lot of their songs it was a relief to see the girls were free from the drudgery of nugudom. I think most will find success as models/actresses.
- Solji officially coming back

I've always wanted to see a girl group get hard-hitting choreography like some boy groups have. EXO's choreo comes to mind when I think of this. I think that would be amazing. I would also love an f(x) comeback as many have said and I just really want Blackpink to have releases and promote like a normal group 😩. How do we only have 9 songs in 2 years? This should have been the year for a brand new album, a full one imo. I've avoided standing them cuz I don't feel like dealing with another 2NE1 situation :(. YG stresses me out man, smh.
