Chae Dong Ha (born Chwae Dong-sik), who left SG Wannabe in January of 2008, has released his 2nd solo album "Essay." This is the first time he is standing on his own in seven years, since the release of his first solo album in 2002, before the formation of SG Wannabe in 2004.

Having experienced everything from the rumors regarding him and the SG Wannabe members to the split with his girlfriend, he seemed to have decided to reveal everything through the release of this album. The songs full of emotion and the words on the inside cover of the album all were very honest.

Recently meeting with him at a cafe in Apgoojungdong, Seoul, he began by saying that, "Since leaving the group, I've been on volunteer trips to the Phillipines, Vietnam, Cambodia, among others, and the bright expressions of those children in such impoverished conditions helped me to sort out my inner turmoil."

The reason you left SG Wannabe?

Financially, I made more money with SG Wannabe. But while in the group, I found it hard to paint the course I wanted for myself. Some say that I left to act, but things like that, you do have to grab the opportunity, but it's not enough of a reason to leave. SG Wannabe is the group I dedicated by 20s to, and I have no regrets. The beginning and the ending shouldn't be different, but I hope you will think that my feelings are the same.

Is your solo album an extension of SG Wannabe's music?

I received a lot of love staying with SG Wannabe until the fourth album. The composer for that time, Jo Youngsoo-ssi, worked with me for my solo album. He said, "Your skills haven't been properly evaluated yet and what you need now is confidence, so let's go with what you do best." Honestly, the song "I Love Because It's You" was going to be the title track, but after monitering, the ballad "How Can I Forget" took its place as it fully melded my vocals and feelings.

A 15-year-old song, "The Heart and Love and Tears," is also on the album.

When I was in my first year of middle-school, my father bought me a small Yamaha piano. 15 years ago, there was a melody that kept coming to mind that I ended up writing down, and I found it for this album and incorporate the melody with lyrics. I wrote it to break-up with my girlfriend at the time. I originally learned to compose under Kim Hyungsuk but ended up walking the singer's road. For this album, I composed two songs, including "I Only See You," and I wrote the lyrics for three.

When did you write the essay for the album jacket?

Writing is a habit for me. My religion is Christianity, and I wrote words I thought of while praying like a diary, so they became more honest. I didn't write every day, but special days and important days, I made sure to write.

In the essay, you write that even though SG Wannabe's first album was a hit, you had to get a part-time job.

Only after SG Wannabe's 2nd album was a hit did the income started to come in, during the 1st album, we didn't earn anything. Even though our music played here and there, we couldn't afford to go to the practice studio so I snuck out in the mornings, without my mother knowing, and ran the newspaper route. Even a dollar was important back then. It had been a while since my father lived with us and my mother worked to make clothes, so I felt it was my responsibility as the only son. But the fact that our first album even came out was so incredible that even though we were poor, it didn't feel like it. It was a bittersweet time.

I also remember you wrote about your heart disease.

I was born with a congenital ventricular septal defect (tn: I hope that makes sense.) so I had surgery when I was six. It's where there was a hole in my heart valve, so the blood would regurgitate and I wouldn't be able to breathe. My mother used to spend her nights patting my back when I stopped breathing while I slept. I received a military exception in 2004 because of it. At one time, because I had a complex over the scar from the surgery, I had another surgery to remove it. The doctors said that it was a miracle that I could sing and they would ask me how I became a singer.

Do you have any burdens about your success as a solo artist?

Right now, I can't think of anything. When I get in the car, I feel like the members will be there, and as a solo artist, I don't know at which point I can consider myself a success. It's obvious that generally, most people don't know about Chae Dong Ha, isn't it? On one side, it's frustrating, but I have confidence in this album.

How do you think you'll feel about your 20s in the future?

That I was escastic about it. These memories are memories I'm honored to have, and my life is a blessed one.

Sometimes I still miss him a bit in SG ;_; But it's good that he took the path he thought would be best for him. I still need to listen to his album /lazy fan.

Well I was. Until I realized that it's not SM it's SG. I didn't bother to read the article, nor do I know who the bad is. I thought it was "SM Wannabe" being a play off of SM Entertainment...

I misunderstood. I didn't bother reading the post, and the header sounds like the guy is leaving a company if you don't know who SG Wannabe is (Which I don't).
I read it as 'SM Wannabe' and thought it was a play off of SM Entertainment.

Aww I'm glad he's doing well. His answer about his part-time job was so sweet. He's doing something he wants, and that's all that matters.
Sort of OT bu SG Wannabe needs to have a new album soon>3
