YG announces new survival show to form another boygroup

Through a post on YG Entertainment’s blog YG Life on October 29, Yang Hyun Suk revealed that like BIGBANG, WINNER, and iKON, the next boy group will also be created through a survival program.

The program is called “YG’s Box of Jewels” (literal translation) and includes Bang Ye Dam. Yang Hyun Suk explains, “‘YG’s Box of Jewels’ is a phrase often used by fans as complaints that once YG artists conclude promotions once, they are locked in the box of jewels and do not come out much. It is also negative language used openly by the media.”

He continues, “‘YG’s Box of Jewels’ has the format of unveiling every single male trainee of YG who hasn’t been revealed, and monitoring the judgements and selections of the viewers through the broadcast will be applied to the selection criteria. There are a total of 29 YG male trainees who will be revealed through the ‘YG’s Box of Jewels’ broadcast, and most of them are between the ages of 14 and 19. As the number of participants is much higher than when BIGBANG, WINNER, and iKON were selected, the competition is higher than ever.”

On the selection criteria for the group members, Yang Hyun Suk shares, “The criteria is the same as BLACKPINK. Skills are a given, and we plan on selecting with a focus on talents with star potential who also have visual charms. We started with the expectation of selecting five members, but it will be decided flexibly while watching how the program carries out.”

Filming for the show has started, and it is scheduled to premiere on November 16. It is expected to be available through V Live and YouTube, and it is also in discussion to air via television.

Yang Hyun Suk concludes his blog post by assuring that he has no plans to create or participate in additional audition programs and will only focus on YG Entertainment from now on.

In house survival shows, where all the trainees are from the same company, are rly just a marketing tactic to get people invested in the group before they debut.

So many groups were marketed that way: Pentagon, seventeen, momoland, vixx, 2pm, stray kids, twice, sf9 and Monsta X. Along with all of YGEs boygroups

I just wonder why YG uses this strategy for ALL of his bgs and none of his ggs. I know he's determined to underpromote his female artists as much as possible but still... it's such a glaring difference

Maybe teddy has a say in that? Since the girl groups are usually his passion project. I think the line up got cemented super early or they only had a few female trainees so a survival show might not have worked? Idk yge are lazy af maybe they thought marketing girls would be too hard.

well we know the lineup for BP was changed last minute bc there are pics of seoyoung/jinny with the other 4. I really think there were a lot of girls who could have been in BP but yg decided at the last minute to only pick the "pretty" ones and the ones who weren't picked left the company when they realized they would probably never debut. :/
i bet that's also the reason that yg doesn't do survivals for girls, he wants to hand pick the "pretty" girls and let the rest rot

i'm not gonna kid myself, different to Mix&Match, this will be a YG group and they will be very successful.
Still, it's gonna be hard to see all the eliminations...i don't think it's YG's style to do a big group a la Seventeen or NCT, i think 7 ot 9 is the biggest the group is going to be.

It's pretty funny to think about this show being called "YG's Dungeon" (English translation), but I'm surprised he has that many trainees, 29 seems like a lot?

The fans talk about the dungeon (box of jewels) to talk about where the already debuted acts go when YG's attention wanders elsewhere, so I don't see the public looking kindly on this scheme.

I feel YG will continue doing this because the groups he produced from these reality/survival show are doing good (in general). YG stans will definitely support so its always a win for YG.
