BLACKPINK is officially in everyone's area.

Billboard has exclusively learned that the K-pop quartet’s Korean company YG Entertainment has teamed up with Interscope Records in a global partnership for BLACKPINK. The talented foursome will be represented by Interscope and Universal Music Group worldwide, outside of Asia.

“We will work closely with the biggest music company, Universal Music Group, globally for the successful global debut and promotion of BLACKPINK,” said YG’s chairman and founder Yang Hyun Suk in a statement. “In addition, we will do our best to help other YG artists to break through the North American and European territories as well.

“We are more than thrilled to begin a partnership with UMG and Interscope,” said Teddy Park, YG’s in-house producer, who has shaped much of BLACKPINK’s sound. “Entertainment today is more global than ever. Music and real talent transcends culture, language, and really has no boundaries. Through this partnership we feel we can truly showcase BLACKPINK’s potential on a grander scale and we look forward to what’s to come.”

“Chairman Yang has built YG Entertainment into a global music powerhouse with an impressive track record of breaking artists. I’m thrilled to expand our relationship with YG through the addition of BLACKPINK to the Interscope family,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. “We look forward to building upon BLACKPINK’s remarkable early success by putting the global resources and expertise of UMG behind them and growing their audience around the world.”

In the past, YG artists have aimed to break into the U.S, including Se7en, Psy and CL, but haven't been able to achieve longevity in the market. Both of the latter two artists signed with Scooter Braun for Stateside representation, but Psy has since left YG, while CL saw only one song, “Lifted,” break into the Hot 100 in 2016, despite several years of anticipation. She recently reignited hope, however, by sharing a video earlier this year to Instagram with Braun proclaiming that it is "time" for her music to come out.

BLACKPINK are global superstars in the making,” commented John Janick, chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M. The music and visuals are so immediately striking and so different from anything else happening in pop music. We are beyond excited to partner with YG in pursuit of their vision for BLACKPINK world domination.”

i wish them all the luck because they're gonna need it. i think they'll do ok but i don't think they'll get far because it's yg, he wants all the success but he doesn't want to put the effort in & he doesn't get the results he wants then he quits which is dumb because you gotta work hard. like they're a popular group yet they have such a small discography compared to other groups that are just as popular as them & that's a fucking shame, like work on their music first & then try to break into other markets.

I think they have the potential to do well. 4 visuals/members, 3 english speakers, and a strong fanbase. It really just depends on how they’re managed.

I saw a translated comment that was basically "yeah, well SNSD signed with that label too and basically only did a few shows" and I completely forgot that that happened.

I remember them on Letterman and stuff, but I forgot that they actually signed to an American label.

So will YG finally bend to the American label and management or will he fuck it up like what he did with CL? Where is CL signed in the US anyway?

Either this will never properly happen or they'll have an album out before CL

I'd love to understand YG's aim. Is this just noise marketing? Is it to bolster shareholders' confidence in the company while BB is away? Is it to soothe his ego? Does he think BP can appeal to the US market better than CL?

I have so many questions and over time, I believe the answers will be what I thought them to be.

The american market doesn't care about girlgroup, they'll have their fans and that's it
+ they don't really bring anything to the table
Teddy recycled songs won't work in an already saturated market, and the yg effect doesn't work on the general audience
Being pretty and lovable isn't enough

i don't understand the rush to push them. it's like he's scared that yg is obviously losing global value so he's just doing things to do them...

Did no one learn from the Wonder Girls? Soshi??

We’ll be lucky if a girl group sees a quarter of the success BTS has had in the US. As much as I prefer girl groups the US doesn’t care about them.

I feel like Blackpink can have some kind of chance with the fact that they have three english speakers and they already appeal more to international stans already. Also, they have one step in the door with Dua Lipa.

At the same time, I don't want to hear YG sell me the same fucking 9 songs but this time it's English, so if they do promote at least keep it in Korean jfc.

Also, they should keep themselves in Korea. They need to establish themselves first. Yeah, their first mini sold a lot, but disappearing to the US sounds like a horrible idea. Especially when they have no music. And Jennie is having a solo. And so is Rose.

this will go well.

He basically threw iKON into Japan when only one member speaks passable Japanese with no Korean promotions for two years. If not for Love Scenario being such a hit, they'd be nobodies in Korea right now.
I wouldn't put it past him to throw away BP's moment of traction in Korea for foreign promotions again.

But like how with only 9 songs and 1.5 choruses? Blackpink feels like their group lacks a certain cohesion and harmony, compared to BTS. Their mvs look cool tho.

I feel like out of the big ggs they have the best chance to break in the the US. It'd be a great opportunity if YG actually puts in the work, but, knowing him (and how CL's career in the US is still dead in the water), he'll be invested for the first two months and then he'll start media-playing about a new flop show he'll definitely lose money in.

listen. I am not saying this as a hater. I love BP. but their success so far is entirely based on their music and the budget of their mvs and fashion. you could slot 4 other random pretty girls into the same group and they'd do just as well (this is not to say that they have no personalities, just that their success has nothing to do with them.)
whereas bts' global popularity is based on their personalities just as much as their music. any group that wants to go global like that has to follow the same path. if yg really wants bp to do it he has to 1; actually go through with the plan (the biggest roadblock by far tbh) and 2; let the girls actually be themselves, not try too hard to be "perfect" and drop the aegyo voices. I don't see it happening.
