The contrast between Omona and places like r/kpop :')
I'm iffy about it too because of Wendy's racist comments that were never addressed. It will sound good because she always sounds great on studio but still... wish it went to someone else

Toned down is definitively the right term ! I think the ability to downvote comments play a big part into discussions looking overly positive - the community is able to downvote any negative comments (even comments saying "meh not found of this song" end up lower than overly positive ones) into oblivion. This + older users + a really conscious decision to not turn discussions into twitter blood baths which makes discussions about politics/racism/sexism almost taboo
Also there is still a small subset of "typical" redditors that makes every metoo discussion derail, it might be playing into the positive effort too

I do appreciate r/kpop, kpop is still escapism for me after all so it's nice to know a place where news are fast and discussions positive. But nuance is good too.
And I'm still baffled that such a space exists on reddit of all places lol

IA there's no place for nuanced discussions there... like they happen sometimes but usually any comment that isn't praise gets downvoted to hell

one of the main reasons why I didn't create a reddit account for r/kpop was because it's like a circlejerk? they just re-emphasise the same positive comments, especially for popular (in that sub) groups like RV, AOA, Girls' Day. not to mention that the base of the users there are white males, there's a lot of ignorance going on there

The thing that made me leave and never look back at r/kpop is someone saying how “racist comments are allowed” and they were referring to a user who used “white trash” lol

r/kpop is trash when it comes to any issues involving racism against black people. they will defend everything. i never go into posts like these there

I think it's the nature of the +- voting function on reddit. If you have a funny or positive thought about the group you get voted up, but if you have an unpopular opinion about the group, you'll be voted down into oblivion. Which has a few effects, it means the more outspoken, intense comments are at the bottom and perhaps unseen, and also that it makes people soften their words so they don't get voted down. The voting function is only good for voting down rude and gross people, but it's otherwise like a light form of bullying. :/

oop, see someone else made a similar comment.

Does John legend stick up for black women though? I know he talks about racism but a lot black male celebrities will talk about racism while throwing black women under the bus.
