Petitioners rise in support of Goo Hara following reports of ex-boyfriend's blackmail

The criticism against Goo Hara’s former boyfriend “C” is increasing after Dispatch released a report that “C” blackmailed Goo Hara with their sex tape.

Goo Hara filed a complaint on September 27, suing “C” for blackmail and sexual violence. Goo Hara’s legal representative briefly stated, “We hope for the prompt but thorough investigation of Mr. Choi’s (C) charges.”

Previously, the debate was over whether the assault was done by both parties or one. However, the case developed from an assault case into a blackmail and sexual violence case.

The Korea Cyber Sexual Violence Response Center also showed support for Goo Hara and asked for the proper punishment of “C.” The center stated that the case is not a simple blackmail case but a case of sexual violence as well. They pointed out that “C” was confident that he could ruin Goo Hara’s life, and that confidence results from the strong gender hierarchy in society.

The public became furious due to the fact that “C” had continuously stated that he was the victim. Social awareness regarding the danger of revenge porn rose, and people started signing up for a national petition on the Blue House website. The number of people who signed up for the petition asking for the proper punishment of criminals like “C” exceeded 120,000 by October 5, 11 a.m KST.

However, the legal representative of “C” claimed on October 4 that his client had no intent to blackmail Goo Hara with the video.

im hoping this scandal opens a debate on korea ... i mean if we should learn something from "my life is not your porn" movement is how awfuly common those crimes related to men hiding cameras to film women (not only their own gf but even strangers) without their concent

Pleasantly surprised to see how public opinion has shifted on this, though it would be nice if we actually got some men coming out and saying "I didn't believe her at first and slandered her on the internet, but seeing what really happened made me see how hard life is for women and that I shouldn't jump to my little meninist conclusions so quickly" because it really shouldn't be like this, where the evidence against the man has to be so incredibly clear and damning and the dude in question has to be pure evil for people to feel sympathy for the female victim.
