YGE sub-label The Black Label confirms signing Jeon Somi, gives more details about her debut

Following reports of Jeon Somi signing with The Black Label, the agency confirmed the news today.

A source from The Black Label said, “We have signed an exclusive contract with Jeon Somi who has proven her talents as an artist and has infinite potential. Through diverse trials and activities we will wholeheartedly support her to become a world class artist.”

It was also reported that it is highly likely that Jeon Somi will debut as a solo artist rather than as a member of a girl group in order for her to debut quickly.

Jeon Somi first appeared in JYP Entertainment’s reality show “SIXTEEN” and became more well known after getting first place on Mnet’s “Produce 101.” She debuted as a member of project group I.O.I and has been in various variety shows.

The Black Label is a subsidiary label of YG Entertainment and is headed by YG producer Teddy. Zion.T is also signed under The Black Label.

Oh JYP is definitively shady right now. Their statements are also vague enough to hint at something bad done by Somi which justified the end of her contract, but to me it reads more like they're pissed and low-key smearing her
But I can see her wishing for a solo career adding to the promised debut always being pushed away

I think Somi has enough brand recognition that going solo won’t be a problem. And if Teddy is feelin his oats he can give her a good song. I feel like...she is pretty much set up for success, it’s just about not wasting the opportunity. I’m just...them being connected to YG is the problem.

Somi, Sohye, and Yoojung met up and spent the holidays at Yoojung's house. Somi uploaded a photo on Instagram and a bunch of wine and soju bottles were seen in the background, netizens pointed it out and criticised the 3 of them because they were all underage, Somi deleted the photos immediately. Fantagio said that the bottles belonged to Yoojung's parents and relatives because they were all apparently there to celebrate Chuseok. Oh, please, this is ridiculous. It's not even an issue.....

What also boder me are netizens acting like they never had a drink as underages, in particular during some family reunion/party with adults, like, please. I've even seen omonians here critizing the same thing.

I don't agree with people getting drunk despite their age (adult or underage), that's a drinking culture that I never understood (maybe because I don't drink), but lets not act as if teenagers in general (and probably many of the ones that are criticizing underage idols for doing so), doesn't/didn't do the same.

i feel like she'll do well as a soloist. i think korea's been responding better to female soloists lately than ggs and i think she's got loads of charisma to make up for areas that she lacks in. given the right concept, i can see somi selling at chungha levels. even if i'm not the biggest fan of her voice, i'm rooting for her.

it is the whole yg/black label that is the most concerning though. can someone make a missing poster for lee hi? somi has enough brand recognition that she can strike out with a smaller company and not have to rely on one of the big 3s to achieve success and probably get a better contract for herself...

There were many reports that the jyp gg was going to have a debut early next year + there were multiple sightings of trainees and Somi together, which makes me think they were gonna stick to their plan of debuting in 2019, but with Somi’s departure, I think their debut might be pushed back even more. :/

Well I saw her perform chunga and sunmi's songs and I do think she'll be fine as a solo artist if she gets good songs, but a group still seems like a better fit for her. At least for now.

obviously don't know all the backstage stuff, but she really fit in with the style that new jyp gg seemed to be headed toward. With the perf they did in Ep of the Stray kids show, I was imaging a LOA Twice concept which I think Somi would have killed. I think JYP was trying promote other trainees like Ryujin to have other recognized trainees in the group so it wasn't just Somi and her back-up dancers, but I get that she was sick of waiting.

I don't think she has the experience that Sunmi has or the charisma that Chungha has to go solo, but prove me wrong girl. Kinda wish she was signed to that other not YG label that katie kim is under cause he debut song slayed. Man do I want like a female soloist label which has Sunmi, Ga-in and Hyuna

i think she should be put into a group bc she can’t completely carry by herself. also, i think somi ENJOYS being in a group as well. i know she’s had temporary things but i doubt whatever group she would be put in would fail.

I'm not super into the idea of her as a soloist, but I would like to see her succeed because she's worked her ass off. Hopefully they take the time to work on her vocals. She sounds great in a group, but on her own she can be grating.

Somi is very disney channel star. I did like hilary duff's first album though so if the production on Somi's solo stuff is good, I could probably sit through her 12 year old voice too.
