Kim Joon Interview (courtesy of shadowjade14 @ HYDkorea)
worth reading, folks!

Alongside Lee Min Ho (Gu Joon Pyo), who’s earned a lot of credit and acceptance as a inexperienced actor, Kim Hyun Joong, who was already a star with SS501, and Kim Bum, who has captured the hearts of viewers with his roles in dramas like “East of Eaden”, Kim Joon, rapper of idol group TMAX, is currently experiencing an unprecedented amount of fame even as the least visual member of the F4 in KBS’ hit drama “Boys Before Flowers”. Even without the gravity and screen time of the other 3 members, Kim Joon describes how unprecedented the popularity and support from the audience and fans have been.
Interviewer: People say that your resemblance to Jang Dong Gun explains why you were casted. Not only are you not a rookie actor, but you were a new idol group member. Why do you think you were cast?
KJ: Even I don’t know. It wasn’t something the producers decided on after one audition. Rather, they made me come back repeatedly so they could better gauge how I was by observing me day-to-day. Sometimes it was to a party, sometimes it was to talk, but for a variety of reasons, I continued to meet with the producers. I’m still curious about what the deciding factor was in the producer’s final decisions. Even when I think about it, it was definitely an unprecedented move. I think they were through looking for fresh faces and started to look for guys that were more down-to-earth like me.
Interviewer: Viewer and fan reception is through the roof right now. How are you feeling? Did you ever image that things would be like this?
KJ: I feel good because I’m busy. Naturally, I’m overwhelmed by the positive reception.
Interviewer: You have the feel and style of a Japanese idol. The topic of conversation seems to be your resemblance to Jang Dong Gun. Have you personally accepted the fact that you are good-looking or handsome? Furthermore, have you done any plastic surgery? Don’t you think your eyes are too big or that maybe your nose seems too “western”?
KJ: Personally, I think I look strange. I guess people notice their shortcomings first. I don’t know about other people, but when I look in the mirror, I can’t help but notice what’s not perfect about me.I’ve never done any plastic surgery. Both my mother and father have big eyes. Rather than simply judging people as beautiful or ugly, I think it is important to look natural. You might not like something about yourself and get something done. Of course, that part about yourself may look more beautiful. However, looking at yourself from a bigger perspective, you’re going to look strange and not wholly complete.

Interviewer: “Boys Before Flowers” was originally a Japanese manga (Hana Yori Dango). Have you ever seen the Japanese drama version?
KJ: I don’t usually read shojo manga, but I remember reading it when it was really popular during my sister’s generation (born 1980) when she brought it hom. I thought the contents lacked depth and the premise seemed overdone. I remember thinking “What is this?”, but I couldn’t help but feel curious about what would happen next. It was unqiuely odd. A lot of people who work for TMAX’s production company seem to have a genuine interest in Japanese music and culture and I ended up watching the Japanese drama series with them. I thought it was good. I wanted to audition when the casting call came in.
Interviewer: There’s this joke going on around about you - that Kim Joon isn’t a part of TMAX, but rather F4.
KJ: (laughs) Naturally, with the F4 a sense of group and belonging has resulted with our participation in the show. Even the show’s producers emphasize how important it is for the members of the F4 to be comfortable and natural with each other. We’ve immediately become close and comfortable being around each other. Since I’m the oldest, I want to take care of the other younger members, but since the others are so competitive, I end up learning more from them.
Interviewer: When was it the hardest while shooting?
KJ: The shooting we did for the New Caledonia scenes were the toughest. I didn’t realize how beautiful the place was until the episode aired. When we got there, I didn’t have a chance to sleep since we shot through the night. By the time we can back at dusk to wash up, it would already be time to go back into makeup. I really didn’t have an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of New Caledonia.
Interviewer: How does it feel to be pampered and lead a life of luxury, comfort, and fame that others never get to experience (in the drama)?
KJ: I’m having to learn a lot since this aristocratic, elite lifestyle isn’t something I’ve ever experienced. Fortunately, among the F4 I am the most wild-spirited and casual member.
Interviewer: Don’t you feel at all sad that your character has no love line?
KJ: I get asked this a lot, but I’ve actually never thought about that. Song Woo Bin’s style is as a peacemaker who likes to take care of others. Since he’s chosen comraderie and friendship over love, there’s no need for a love line for his character in the drama.
