A continuation of this post featuring data visualization for girl groups. This data comes from Gaon chart numbers only and features sales only in Korea (so no Japanese albums).

This is so hypnotising. I had no idea Seventeen and Got7 were such huge sellers!

Monsta x appearing at the end :') my boys

I wonder how the sales are going to look like when exo finally makes their cb. They'll ofc sell a lot but I wanna know if they'll beat records?

if nothing else i'm sure exo will definitely be able to beat their own records which they have achieved so far with every new release (i think). exo-ls seem very fired up due to this long drought so it's gonna be interesting!

when people act like SM isn't a huge selling power jokes
It's wild to me that JYJ was as high as they were for so long
It's wild how quickly Exo shot up.
This whole thing was just insane.

BTS only appeared in 10/15 and it took them a little under 3 years to outsell everyone else. this is crazy. but i assume exo-l's are fighting to get back to the top with their next comeback.

i had no idea that super junior were the top for so many years, i knew they had a dedicated fanbase, but i always assumed tvxq or big bang were the top sellers.

wanna one also came out of nowhere and made it to the top 3, crazy.

rumor has it that a big chunk of their fandom joined armys, hence why BTS slowly took off in the US

This was one shocker for me in this video, the fact that Super Junior still outsell almost all of the younger groups.

even as a long-time exo fan, it's always so crazy to see just how much they sold* with xoxo/growl. they rose to the top in such a short amount of time and (almost always) remained there until this year? it's insane. the gap between exo and everyone else in 2016/2017? CRAZY. ppl always wanna pretend that exo didn't even sell that much with ex'act but look at them outselling themselves AND everyone else's faves! i'm really curious to see what this chart will look like once exo actually do release something this year c:

i never knew seventeen sold that much! anyway, got7's slow but steady rise to the upper ranks makes me very very happy :> i hope they can keep up their rise to the top!

*i keep saying "sold" just because it's easier but come to think of it, this sort of data visualization with hanteo numbers would be super interesting as well!

I'm surprised my boys MBLAQ stayed on the list so long! Even when I was stanning I thought they were basically nobodys.
Also shocked to see BAP fluctuating so much and that Exo-K was outselling Exo-M, I always thought M was the preferred group, well I guess with ifans anyway.

OMFG Exo was literally killing the game for so long, even up to just a few months ago! My babies :')
I wonder if they had had a comeback if they'd still be no. 1

this chart only features sales in korea, and M was more successful in china (at least for the short time they were active). in korea, K was more successful

The girl group video I was much more emotionally attatched to since I listen to them much more, but this is very fascinating as someone who doesn’t follow Boy groups as closely. It’s interesting in the GG video how Twice basically shot up to the top super fast, where BTS steadily started heading to the top and then really pushed through the last couple years.

Also both of these videos for boy and girl groups emphasize to me that says while YG has famous groups, they’re not even a close second in both cases. Like even in regards to just YG and SM, YG’s sales/accomplishments look smaller next to SM. I feel like with how fans hype their groups up, YG should have more.

I was surprised to see Big Bang around 5th at best and G-Dragon never higher than the bottom few while everyone calls them kings of kpop and G-Dragon this huge superstar. i thought they would be top at some point.

I actually thought that BigBang gonna be where Super Junior is, that was big surprise seeing them this high.

seventeen were the 3rd best-selling group in 2016 (on hanteo) after exo and bts, so their sales really aren't a surprise. ifans keep underestimating them because their fanbase is mainly korean and japanese (btw their latest korean album broke 100k sales on oricon the other day and very few kpop groups have managed to do so in recent years).

i'd like to see a ranking like this for hanteo sales since they're a more accurate representaion of actual album sales.

these are so fascinating. I had no idea how not much of a seller YG is compared with SM, even when they were on his prime. I was expecting BB to be higher numbers.
SM is a monster, i wonder if nct will catch up to keep that domination sm had with the 2nd generation.
I love like Infinite, cncblue, beast/highlight who are always there, mind their business and doing pretty well for themselves.
I was surprised to see how much BAP shows up here, no wonder TS put the prices weighiting gold. And GOT7 got me shocked ngl

I think it's so interesting to see hype VS actual sales

As a Got7 fan it's lovely to see them rising up :)

Interestingly I got into K-pop maybe 3 years ago, and of those top groups that appeared, JYJ is the one I know zero about. I have never seen any one do a cover of their songs or dance I don't think.

Wannaone is such a big cash cow that I can see them wanting to continue it... But some sales might be down to the feeling of 'limited edition' that comes with knowing they will end at some point? ( If that makes sense).

You never see anyone do anything JYJ because they're basically banned from tv thanks to SM. But if you seen anyone do Mirotic, that's one of their songs from when they were still in TVXQ/DBSK.

Jaejoong, one of the members, is pretty popular. There was recently a post on here about him being in the audience for a tv show and the ratings shooting up for the fee seconds he was shown

I love how the SM groups are basically battling each other for the top four until 2017 when BTS comes in. their rise continues to astonish me.

thanks for this post and the girl group one, OP! they're so fun to watch

This was amazing to watch I had just started in late 2012/2013 getting into kpop so it was amazing to see the change over the time frame. I didn't realize Super Junior stayed on top as long as they did, I knew Exo would fly up there because I remember when it happened, plus BTS steadily growing until now.

I was happy that Beast/Highlight, CNBLUE, and BAP kept making an appearance over the years. Seventeen and Wanna One also went up fast.

I always thought BIg Bang sold more then the other groups so it was odd to see Super Junior always up towards the top and not them. Also at one point it had the top spots all being Sm.

it was super interesting to watch how the numbers fluctuated in the months certain groups had their breakthrough releases and the sales when i seriously started following kpop now in late 2014/early 2015. vixx definitely had a spike in sales around the time error came out and watching them pretty much hold onto the same spot all of 2017 shows that having 3 releases in 2017 def helped them in the long run

the years where the top 5 were all just sm bgs is just wild to try to conceptualize lol

seeing BAP hanging on and around made me happy but also sad bc ts ent is the worse ;)

Ah a visual representation of why so many are so pressed when it comes to BTS. Doing that without any sub-units too. Explains the bitterness!

I’m guessing these are album sales otherwise it would be a very different landscape for YGE.

Only thing I found surprising was how somewhat popular Super Junior were when Mamacita was released. Guessing having Kangin and Sungmin rejoining for that particular comeback must've galvanized Elfs to support, especially considering how it was three years past their international fandom peak. Crazy!
Even crazier this how SM occupied the top four spots for years. That'd be annoying for those that wanted options for bgs.
