not only is this a bad idea because he's very clearly trying to make the whole family famous, including himself but (and it's shitty that it's the case) he's going to make things a lot harder for Somi since he's foreign.

I mean in the way that he's now her agent/manager and needs to run her business in the korean market as a businessman and not just as her guardian and an actor. I know he speaks Korean well but seeing other foreigners talk about their experiences doing business in korea, even the ones who can speak the language, tt's likely there's going to be some barriers that this is going to place on who's willing to meet with them, where he'll be taken seriously etc. and that's only IF JYPE doesn't actively try and interfere/pull rank (which they're already doing with the press play).

Mes tweet makes it sound like he'll have a co-rep so hopefully they rly trust them.

I don't think there are any foreign agency owners/operators and the ones who do get representation in the west keep their korean agencies too because partly for this reason. Working within the K-ent system is an uphill battle if you aren't korean...much like in any foreign country tho it's not purely a Korean thing.

Hmm....I can see what you mean.

If this happened a few years ago, he probably could have just managed whatever "love calls" she got from companies, but now he has to actively manage her career. Still, Somi might be big enough for a company to put up with him in order to get to her, so we'll see. I definitely think he would, at least, have some Korean co-rep/assistant/mouthpiece etc to handle things on his behalf...if he's smart :/

The way he's continuously trying to shoehorn both himself and her little sister into her career when he obviously doesn't belong is SO offputting. On the one hand he seems to have dedicated his whole life to his thirst for fame so he might have planned this out more thoroughly than expected but he's definitely not going to let her have her own career and I wonder if he knows how much critique even large agencies (I think it was FNC that was under fire for constantly pulling this a whole ago?) have gotten for only negotiating package deals with their idols - you're right in that him being foreign will be to his detriment as there's no way they will put up with it from an outsider if they already don't like it from their own people.

I always found it weird how much he's pushing the little sister too, not just mentioning her but making a point of how she's "even better" than Somi, like Somi isn't that into becoming famous and he knows the time he has to use her as a stepping stool is limited. What kind of parent would openly pit their kids against eachother like that?

I think the fact that he's had such little breakthrough without her name attached is a big indicator of how people see him. Like look at the foreigners who are personable and don't give off the same vibe, they're working really steadily or at least able to turn a few small opportunities into bigger ones.

i think his "fame" (aka his lil stunt on DOTS) went to his head and now he thinks hes some kind of expert in the korean entertainment industry and can manage somi's career, when in reality he only got the job because they needed a white male actor and he was the one available. all his other appearances on variety shows has been with or because of somi, and he just tagged along. while she does have a pretty big name recognition in korea she definitely needs an agency with contacts in the industry to maintain her career, and i doubt her father has enough ties to get her gigs.

Sometimes I wonder if it's actually the opposite because there have been quite a few cases (even with SNSD if I remember correctly) where idols will be looking at contract renewal or trying to break free from their contract/go up against their company for mistreatment and news item will mention it's their parents or them and their parents looking over it, even if the idols in question are well into their twenties. The idea of parental control seems to be much stronger.

It's pretty grim when you might have been better off dorming with 9 other girls than having to live with this dude.

i remember reading that it has something to do with seniority, like even household names like SNSD had to bring their parents to contract renewals because SM would take them more seriously than the girls, simply because they are so much younger than the officials at SM.

I have this feeling that her dad convinced in her some way that she would be much more successful being on her own, because I get the impression from her that she enjoys being around other group members and that she really wanted to be in the new JYPE group.
I hope everything goes well for her, but I'm honestly anxious for her and her sister with Papa Douma's stage parent antics.

I came back in this post because I finally watched the finale to Produce 48. And I also get the vibe that she really likes being in a group. She seemed really happy to be with I.O.I again. She seemed really close to the Unnies too.

I know she's had a solo song (songs?), but I think she fits much better in a group, and I think that's want she wants too. Her dad's probably going to try to get her on shows, because I doubt he has the songwriters, choreographers, and hair and makeup team to give her a solo anytime soon.

I want to think this is temporary until she turns 18 and doesn't need parental guidance to be in an agency, but I doubt it. This sounds like creep!Dad's push to make Somi and Evelyn a package deal for variety etc. It all sounds shady and weird and this could tank the career for an unsinkable idol who literally only had to debut to be successful.
Hopefully Somi has her own bank account to keep money away from him in case he pulls a Culkin scenario.
