Cheongju Heungdeok police officers said Wednesday that a woman reportedly beaten by her boyfriend died in a hospital two days after the incident.

The 21-year-old victim was beaten by her boyfriend of the same age on the streets of Bokdaedong, Cheongju, according to police. The victim’s boyfriend reportedly hit the victim with his fist multiple times until she was knocked unconscious.

An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death. The victim’s boyfriend has been arrested for inflicting serious injury.

Through the autopsy, we are investigating the degree of violence as well as the motive of the offender to press accurate charges,” police said.

I'm just going to leave my angry thoughts about this in the comments because BOY I have alot to say about it

unfortunately many people only care about themselves. "look, there's a fight over there. ah no, don't help her, i don't wanna get beaten up as well. maybe she deserves it. other people will help her." i've seen so many tv reports where journalists staged these situations (car accidents, child/woman gets beaten in public) and it's sad how many people completely ignored it. when you ask them later why they didn't help they always have the same excuses: "oh, i didn't see it! / i'm busy! / i didn't want to interfere!"

it's sad, really. the least you can do is call the police.

there have been incidents in my country where police and emergency rescue were not able to properly help victims because people were in the way filming them with their phones. they now put up tarps at car accidents to cover the victims and avoid gawkers. if they catch you filming victims while sitting in your car and (slowly) driving by you have to pay a fine.

honestly, some people really have no shame.

To call the police would be the best option and screaming at the attacker from safe distance maybe. I read multiple time that intervening during DV attacks is super dangerous because not only risk from initial attacker but women are often so broken that they can protect their abuser.

Korea doesn’t have Good Samaritan laws unfortunately... if you get involved and get hurt / hurt someone else / whatever, you can be sued yourself... so no one helps or gets involved. It sucks.

Makes you wonder just how common it is for people to encounter a dude wailing on his gf in public? I get being scared to intervene but to not even call the police??

Fuck him. Fuck this. Men are literally the worst.

Edit: what does it mean that he was only arrested for inflicting serious injury? Has he not been charged with murder?

I'm not going to get my hopes up, but this man belongs in prison. I hope she receives some semblance of justice.

Why is it so common that men assault and kill their wife/lover/girlfriend? It's so fucked up.

No one deserves this, there's nothing to excuse this behavior and yet he might get off because he's a man. I just fear that happening. A woman I know was beaten to death in her sleep because she was trying to get a divorce, men keep doing these things and getting away with it.

I feel so bad for the victim and her family. Korea seriously needs some policy inititaives or something to address violence against women. like 90% of murder victims in Korea are women. Its so sad
