someone who is also probably procrastinating on things they should be doing took time out of their day to make a couple timelapse graphs showing GG sales. It's super interesting to see the changes.

it looks like the numbers check out. it almost makes it look unfair to anyone not SNSD for a while there

This is fascinating, thank you for posting!

It really does emphasize how SNSD was really the top girl group and wow The Boys really was their prime, I knew it was a huge success but put in this perspective - damn! That was the first song in a long time for SNSD that really wowed me too when I was a kpop fan back then, so it makes sense

Twice though, wow they’re clearly the successors. If anyone says otherwise they just need to watch this video. They came in with a bang and really took over. I have mixed feelings, I’m a Twice fan so I’m really proud of them but I feel bad for SNSD lol. Oh well, it’s just part of life

Last edit - I promise! - I initially just watched the video about the albums per month/year, the first one didn’t load for me. Now watching that one, i wish people gave KARA, Apink, and Tara more credit since they really held their own and the numbers are impressive. YG is lucky that their groups are successful in being relevant and trendy because when you see these numbers, I feel like the company received more praise than it deserves. (Obviously my opinion)

"I’m a Twice fan so I’m really proud of them but I feel bad for SNSD lol" eh, nothing to feel bad for SNSD about lol. they had a massive impact, a 10+ years career and no matter how legendary you are you will always be surpassed by someone eventually. if twice don't blow the world market open for k-girl groups like bts have been doing, then someone will after them.

Yea, that’s what my ‘oh well, it’s part of life’ comment implied lol. As you mentioned no one stays on top forever and I’m curious what group in the future will be a huge success and starts breaking Twice’s records. The sad part was more that I liked seeing them on top for so long, if I didn’t like them I wouldn’t have cared haha

yeah that's understandable. girl groups with a "tough" image like 2ne1 and bp, seem to have the most success globally, so i'm hoping we'll see one of them blow up in the way bts has. (an actual yg group will never get to do that though, since they release about 2.5 songs a year lol)

Also to add to my previous comment - since I don’t want to edit again, it makes sense that Twice is doing so well since they share a lot in common with SNSD - 9 members that while yes some are more popular than others, it’s clear that each one stands out and has quite a fan base (amongst other things and I know this isn’t an accident on JYPE’s end)

Also in similarities - Ive read a few times that they have a big female fan base in Japan, and their next Japanese release has a girl crush concept :) the teasers styling reminded me slightly of their debut Like Ooh Ahh, it looks like they are following the SNSD playbook that for long term success - market to your female fans. I hope the song is good (as I don’t really care for their Japanese releases) and if it’s successful - crosses over to Korea

Twice's career and their advancement into Japan really reminds me of SNSD. I don't stan Twice as much as I did SNSD but nevertheless its a very nice deja vu lmao

It is a nice deja vu! Personally I’m a bigger Twice fan but both groups are special to me, they’ve created some special kpop memories for me

damn SNSD was a wall and then twice came out of nowhere.

I had no clue fx sold so much, SM is stupid... and 2NE1 too, why do these agencies just waste potential of or disband successful ggs smh.

The end of 2ne1 and f(x)’s careers just makes me sad (the latter isn’t disbanded but lbr when are they gonna come back)

Despite being into Kpop for almost ten years I've never cared much about actual sales numbers so this was super interesting. (Did this count both digital and physical sales though, or only one of the two?) In regards to total sales, two things stood out to me:

- I never realized T-ara/KARA/f(x) had such similair sales to 2NE1. The latter group had ALOT less releases though, I wonder how much more 2NE1 would have sold had they had regular releases like Kara and T-ara.
-Twice and Red Velvet are moving impressive numbers, in a much shorter amount of time then their seniors. Twice has already outsold my queens SNSD physically and they've only been around for about two years? I support girls always.

I also found it interesting how Twice and RV are killing it in comparison to their seniors, and I wonder why!

Soshi is still the monster girl group. It might change in the near future, but I don’t care; they’ve had one hell of a run at the front and deserve a more comfy backseat; yet they’re still popping in on the front to wave hi from time to time. As a long term fan, what more can you ask for?

That little article were SM basically said, “ok, we need SNSD to keep up internationally” tasted so delicious.

International fans liked Bad Boy a lot - and Korea seems to really love Red Velvet’s Red songs more, I feel like SM should give SNSD more Bad Boy-type songs if they’re going to promote as a subunit. It fits their age and subunit and would make the international audience SM wants to hold onto happy, it seems like a win win. You Think showed The potential, so improving on that could be interesting!

(Also to clarify - not saying RV should ditch Velvet type songs, just that international fans really liked BB and I think they should use that as an example for the new SNSD. ....no Lionhearts pleaseeee)

We love the ngg twice!

But damn, I'm a MeU yet I never realised that they were on kara/t-ara levels. Also love how well apink and lovelyz are doing!

I'm actually really surprised by how much after school sold, compared to eg miss A. They got carried by Suzy even more than I realised

e: lmao this person put so much effort into the visualisation and then they use some kind of 64kbps audio quality for the songs

I’m just so fucking happy that SNSD got to where they are and they were just dominating for so long! Their achievements have never really dawned on me in numbers so it’s a true bittersweet moment.

And of course congrats to Twice for achieving so much in so little time! I’m both a Sone and Once, so I’m just glad both groups are doing well, and Twice possibly can achieve greater heights than they are now.

Fascinating, thanks for sharing
It made me realise how much Wonder Girls was talked up, sales wise they never came close to SNSD. Did SNSD ever even view anyone as their rivals?

Also surprised to see how Twice just comes out of nowhere to claim top place.

Well, the graph starts in 2010, after the wonder girls had their devastating hiatus.

Gee would have still been released tho so they would have blown up regardless of wonder girls departure

well, yeah, but i was talking about why wg sales were low in 2010

I see. I wasn't that into K-pop back then, so WG success was pre 2010?

They debuted in 2007 and were /the/ girl group until 2009, the year that they went on hiatus and snsd really startes to blow up

I think the closest competitors to Soshi in their peak was 2NE1 and T-ara. JYP really screwed over Wonder Girls shipping them off the States.

KARA was a strong contender when they took over Japan for a bit but then they had that issue with their label.

so happy for twice, their rise is incredible. i wonder how much would bp sell if they had more frequent comebacks since square up sold 100k+ on hanteo

From: [identity profile] kamoteatmani.livejournal.com
Damn @ SNSD and for years they've been the monster not including TTS and Taeyeon who were also doing SO well imagine how far their sales are together.

I had always figured f(x) would've been THAT gg with comebacks hardly as frequent as Twice/RV/SNSD (back in the day) and I really don't mind waiting a couple of years for new comebacks if we get that quality but SM needs to let them out of the dungeon again... T_T

This is the kind of data visualization nerdiness that I live for lol

As a MeU, this chart hurt me so much. f(x) was so close to being the gg if they just had at least one more comeback. now it's been too long since their latest release that it's hard for me to imagine them picking up where they left off

From: [identity profile] existingisfunny.livejournal.com
I wonder how the numbers would be adjusted if SNSD, TTS, and Taeyeon were counted together. I'm not surprised by any of the results, even AOA's place doesn't shock me. But I'm really curious why kpop fans don't carry Kara's legacy. It makes sense for the drama T-ara went through but the Kara erasure? Why!?

This was fascinating to watch. Thanks for posting it op.

It made me happy to see some groups I didn't think would be doing well on here and also hurt my heart to seeing low numbers for some (not doing as good as I had thought) and watching groups drop off the graph sucked :(

This also makes me even more amused that my Sone friend [livejournal.com profile] millioned has recently become a Twice fan.

Late to this but this is absolutely fascinating
SNSD are legends and I'm surprised The Boys is still outselling everything??? That was really the top era for them.
I get why T-ARA's success is erased but KARA was really up there and no one talks about them anymore :( feels sad. Also APink and f(x) were better than I remembered, and 2NE1 would have crushed everyone with regular physical releases :(
I thought Wonder Girls had sold more, this was a surprise o.o
Twice really came out of nowhere and overtook everything??? this is so impressive omg. As a fan (though I'm not stanning them as hard as I used to) I'm really proud of them. I can't wait to see their next record!
And it was nice seeing Lovelyz popping up at some point <3

I'm late I saw this one after watching the boys one. SNSD I knew would dominate until Twice came in. In the girls chart it was odd it seemed like it wasn't really changing a lot SNSD stayed on top and some came and moved off the bottom but it seemed pretty steady in the first few years. Then the last two or three the chart started moving once RV, Twice, Gfriend, and even Apink started doing really well.

Twice really soared! I am happy for both SNSD and Twice since I really like both of them.
