Mamamoo Release Sultry 'Egotistic' Music Video
Korean vocal pop quartet Mamamoo returned Monday (July 16) with their brand new single, the lush “Egotistic.” As usual, Mamamoo delivers dynamic vocals in their latest song, which draws on the Latin pop trend that is increasingly showing up in K-pop.

The song fronts their newly-released EP Red Moon, the fourth EP to be inspired by a color; it follows 2015’s Pink Funky, 2017’s Purple, and March’s Yellow Flower.

After kicking off with scratchy hums and crisp strings, a snapping beat and tinny, reggaeton-esque percussion are added in the lead-up to the chorus as the four women deliver soulful verses. The hook explodes with chanting refrains and electric guitar riffs before falling to a dramatic drop with the deadpan post-chorus verse. Dramatic throughout, “Egotistic” reflects the album’s red-inspired theme of anger and passion.

The music video for “Egotistic” features each of the members – Hwasa, Solar, Moonbyul, and Wheein – on her own delivering verses as she dances along to the song’s melody amid vibrant scenery, with some of the members incorporating flamenco into their performances. The quartet come together to deliver the song’s charismatic choreography, with shoulder-shrugging and hair-throwing moves emphasizing the song’s message. Guitars serve as the stand in for their scorned, egotistical lover and the video culminates with the metaphor being set alight. A jaguar also makes an appearance.

Red Moon was released Monday along with the single, and features a total of six songs, including album closer “Selfish” featuring Red Velvet’s Seulgi. All four members are credited with co-writing album tracks or lyrics.

After getting their start in 2014, Mamamoo has become one of South Korea’s most prominent girl groups, known for their bright, funky songs as well as their expressive vocals.

MAMAMOO Talks About Their Competition And Choosing A Passionate Song For Their Summer Comeback
MAMAMOO shared their thoughts on the group’s latest comeback.

On July 16, MAMAMOO held a showcase at the Yes24 Live Hall for their second album “Red Moon.”

Explaining why the group chose a song of the Latin genre, Moonbyul said, “Usually when summer tracks are released, there are many refreshing songs. MAMAMOO also always came out with refreshing songs. But this time, we thought about what it would be like if we came out with an even hotter song with the feeling of fighting fire with fire.”

She continued, “We wanted to differentiate ourselves with a more powerful song. There are many artists having a comeback this time, but everyone is a competitor as well as a companion who enjoys music like us. Since there is a wide variety of music lately, everyone is our rival and companion. Instead of feeling competitive, we want to show our style more.”

Released on July 16, MAMAMOO’s title track “Egotistic” was written by Kim Do Hoon and produced by Park Woo Sang. It’s a song that makes listeners think of a passionate summer that talks about being in a relationship with someone who’s selfish and does whatever they want.

MAMAMOO Talks About When The Members Feel Like One, And Excitement For Comeback
MAMAMOO recently held their showcase for “Red Moon” on July 15 and chatted with fans about their latest comeback.

The group said they felt a lot of pressure because “Starry Night” did so well, but that they’re very happy with the latest album, which is a more passionate follow-up to the emotions in “Starry Night.”

The first time they heard “Egotistic,” their new title track, they were wowed. Solar said, “We were excited to be doing something completely different.”

On the chart performance of the new song, Wheein said, “The song charted higher than I thought, so I’m happy,” while Hwasa said, “Rather than expecting good results, I believed. Rankings are important too, but we’re just so happy with our final product. Because we can confidently put forth this album and call it our music, I think we’ve succeeded.”

Now four years into their careers, MAMAMOO said they sometimes feel like they’ve become one. Solar explained, “When we’re singing and we can communicate with each other through our eyes, I think, ‘we’ve really been together for a long time now.’” Wheein agreed, saying, “We feel it in the little things.” Hwasa said it’s the feeling when she comes home from vacation: “I couldn’t be happier to see the members again.” Moonbyul added, “When I’m by myself, I think, ‘Right, I was with Wheein, Solar, and Hwasa.’ I often think that I’ve really met some great people, and that we’ve become family.”
