YG sued for nullifying the debut of ‘Mix Nine’ trainee

YG Entertainment has been sued for cancelling the debut of Woo Jin-young, who was a trainee of audition program “Mix Nine.”

On Tuesday, Woo’s agency Happyface Entertainment stated that it filed a damage suit against YG on June 18 for turning a blind eye over canceling the trainee’s promised debut for months -- Woo was supposed to debut as one of the winners of the show -- and abusing its power against the trainee’s agencies.

The released statement by Happyface reads, “Two months have passed since the end of ‘Mix Nine,’ but YG hasn’t mentioned a word about a plan for the trainee’s debut. It just neglected them.”

“From the early stages of building the program and nullifying the trainee’s debut, YG has been accused of making unilateral decisions that are favorable to itself by using its position in the industry.”

In May, it was reported that YG held meetings with the agencies of ‘Mix Nine’ winners to discuss their debut plans regarding promotions and contracts. But they failed to reach agreements, which resulted in the cancelation of the debut and Woo returning to his agency as a trainee. According to Happyface, YG then used the agencies not agreeing as an excuse to cancel the debut.

Happyface said it has demanded ten million won ($9,000) in compensation, explaining that the cost symbolized the agency’s hope for the K-pop industry to be free from “Gapjil,” a Korean term which refers to the abuse of power by someone against a person in a weaker position.

Responding to Happyface’s lawsuit, YG released a statement, which read, “We thought the situation ended a few months ago when the heads of the six agencies met and came to an amicable agreement. So we were not expecting this kind of situation.”

It added that it will respond by discussing the issue with a legal expert and try to minimize misunderstandings through the final decision of the court.

That's like, a drop in the water for YG, but I hope they somehow win anyway, since it'll piss him the fuck off. I can just imagine the wanky press releases.

hmm i'm curious what they have violated. bc yg seems pretty slick in avoiding violating contracts like this in last minute. like i think they debuted akmu and that new girl right before the set out date. i'm afraid nothing will come out of this unless they've officially canceled to debut the winner.

but also, i've been wondering, the other idol making show from sbs? kbs? with the girl and boy group. are they received well? i mean, even mnet itself can't replicate the success of pd 101 with idol school. so yeah, idk why they bother with another shows really.

It's gimmicky and gets public attention, hence why there are so many idol reboot/debut shows, but obviously there are pitfalls when companies have to work together in an industry where it's the wild wild west of contract law

but i mean not even the debuted group that potentially will cause problems, but even the shows werent received well.

eh idk. they tried.

hmm i'm curious what they have violated.

Here:

"Happy Face claims that the original contract stated that the winning MIXNINE group would have a promotional period of 4 months. This was also what was said in the press conference ahead of MIXNINE. However, the period was unexpectedly increased to 3 years. YG used its influence as a large company to force the participating companies to conform to this contract.

YG stated that 4 months is not enough time to produce a full debut (preparing the song, shooting an MV, learning the dance, exclusive shows, etc). After 7 rounds of peaceful discussion, all company representatives decided against debuting with a longer contract.

Happy Face also claims that YG did not compensate them for the expenses that went into having their trainees on the show. For six months, their trainees accumulated expenses involving training, makeup, clothing, travel, etc. They were also supposed to receive part of the profit from the music released from the show. But this compensation was never given."

it's my understanding that unb and uni.t seem to be doing alright, but they both have some "big" names in them (relatively speaking)

What group do you think would be their equal in term of popularity? bc i know they're not flopping, but still, if they didnt make it big, i think it wouldn't make much different for their career after the group disband. although it's still better than doing nothing in their company's basement i guess.

yeah, i don't think any of them are gonna make it big, but imo if ukiss, hotshot, sonamoo, dia and laboum don't pick up a teeny bit after this/take advantage of them being in these groups i'll be very surprised (i have given up bigflo/bigstar hope, but if i hadn't i'd hope for more from them too). a.c.e seem to be the only ones releasing music concurrently with unb.
i'll especially be surprised if dia don't pick up, because the public suddenly seems to have fallen in love with yebin, after ignoring her for literally her entire time in dia. they thought somyi was cute too, and maybe jueun performing with the groups will help spread goodwill.

i'd say the groups aren't really flopping, but definitely not soaring like w/o, so i guess any group in the middle tiers is probably comparable. it's sad to say it but i.o.i wasn't really that popular in the grand scheme of things, and the uni+ groups are probably a little behind i.o.i.

Are you for real? =-= That's probably what YG spends on alcohol in one night. I wonder why only 10 mil won.. I assume there is a reason...
Glad they are doing something tho. Can't be cheap for them and they are going up against YG who has power, money, connections, an immoral dickwad who makes all the decisions, etc.

Yeah, I read that. Still don't really get it. Just because they don't want to seem in it for the money?

They are gonna regret it when YG drags 'em out with a counter-sue and the bills come home.

10 million won sounds extremely low, they’d spend that in just legal fees; might not even be worth the trouble because YG is gonna try to drag their asses around.

yeah i get what they were going for symbolically but they really should sue for a lot more. they might not take yge down but they should at least try to make a dent in their pocket change.

Do people not get what a symbolic gesture is? This company is not suing for money they are trying to prove a point and I am here for it. Bring YGE and YHS down!

YG has a lot of fucking nerve. They know they offered those companies that ridiculous contract that wouldn't be signed just so they could cancel that debut. I do wonder since those companies didn't sign the newer contract, if that still makes the original one valid.

I would hope that HFE wouldn't make this move if they weren't prepared. They might have the other companies backing them, to help with legal fees and whatnot. Either way, I'm all for them wanting to show it's the principal. Just because you have leg up over others or seniority, doesn't mean you get to treat people any type of way.
