South Korea fell to Mexico 2-1 for their second straight loss at the FIFA World Cup in Russia on Saturday, with their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage quickly fading.

Son Heung-min's stunner in second-half stoppage time wasn't nearly enough for South Korea at Rostov Arena in Rostov-on-Don, about 1,000 kilometers south of Moscow. Carlos Vela scored on a 26th-minute penalty, and Javier Hernandez doubled Mexico's advantage in the 66th, with South Korea only managing one goal in response.

Having earlier stunned defending champions Germany, Mexico are sitting pretty atop Group F with six points.

South Korea, who lost to Sweden 1-0 to open group play, are still pointless. Their World Cup fate hinges on the result of the Germany-Sweden showdown in Sochi, which was to begin three hours after the start of the South Korea-Mexico contest.

If Sweden prevail or manage a draw, then South Korea will be eliminated. In that case, Mexico (six points) and Sweden (four points) will occupy the top two spots, and South Korea won't be able to finish higher than third in the group.

If Germany win, South Korea will still have a distant shot at reaching the round of 16 on tiebreakers.

For the second straight match, South Korea allowed a goal on penalty. In the 24th minute, defender Jang Hyun-soo was called for a handball violation when he blocked an Andres Guardado cross with his right arm while sliding in the box.

Two minutes later, Vela struck it past keeper Jo Hyeon-woo with his left foot for a lead that Mexico would never relinquish.

Hernandez, also known as "Chicharito," netted his 50th career goal for Mexico in the 66th, with Hirving Lozano setting him up on a breakaway. It was Lozano returning the favor to his teammate, after Hernandez assisted on Lozano's goal against Germany in a similar play.

Son saved South Korea from the brink of another clean sheet loss, but it was too little, too late for his side.

Let's talk World Cup, Omona! What were your favorite matches so far? I really liked the match up between Nigeria vs Iceland (which, based off my previous post, some of you really like them lol), Serbia vs Switzerland, and Belgium vs Tunisia (which I woke up so early for lol)

the pictures of son sobbing are the most depressing football thing i've seen since salah went off in the CL. all i wanted was a son banger so i was feeling pretty good after the match and then i saw the pictures :(
my son (spurs) jersey is supposed to arrive sometime this week, so i'll be able to wear it for their last match at least.

ger/swe was really fun today! my heart was pounding during the closing minutes lol.
i'm gonna wake up early for eng/pan tomorrow.

yoooo all the matches today were crazy. south korea got a bit violent near the end with frustration, but i still felt terrible when they all just collapsed on the pitch after the whistle. they didn't play badly today, so it must've been devastating :-///

germany vs sweden was crazy though! i managed to catch the first goal by sweden and the last goal by kroos (my man!!) and i saw that reus scored too, so overall, a good day. i feel like this world cup is really exciting overall with a lot of smaller teams making their mark

I was so happy when reus scored because it was only his second world cup match and the first time that he played from the start. He deserves all the success

I was proud of Korea for getting on the board; penalty kicks seem so much easier than regular goals, so it's almost like the game was 1-1 instead of 2-1. And I think Mexico is going to go far, so they did well against a great team.

And Germany-Sweden was a great match. I couldn't decide who I wanted to win! I am traditionally pro-Germany (after the US) but since they won last time, I'm ready for them to be knocked out in the quarter finals. And Sweden had some swagger.

I'm hoping Korea throws down against Germany. They seem like a really fast team, so hopefully they can shock the Germans. The Korean goalie was super cute with his hair too.

I almost died watching ger-swe, I was so sure that Sweden would kick us out but damn kroos saved our ass literally at the last minute. #kroosartig
Doesn't change the fact that our current state is awful, there's no team bond whatsoever.

Poor Rudy tho, he was so sad when they had to take him out after he broke his nose :( he really wanted to continue playing but that would have ended in a bloodbath lol

Mexico \0/ 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽❤️ I knew those pendejos would come through. I did feel bad for SK after the game :/ they played so dirty but then again they were under a lot of pressure. Glad Son was able to score a goal.

Germany vs Sweden was so thrilling lol everyone in my house kept screaming and throwing their shit around. I still can’t believe Germany did that last minute.

I’m so nervous for Mexico vs Sweden this Wednesday. There’s no doubt that Germany will win against SK. Mex and Swe are going to brutally fight for that win. I hope Colombia and Japan pull through 🤞🏼 Argentina needs to go home.

Yesterdays GERvsSWE was a wild ride, I watched it with a bunch of friends and we all already gave up hope when Kroos made his banana-shot. The house was madness after that lol

England is on fire! Go guys! The GER-SWE game last night was glorious. I'm also really excited for Senegal's match after this, they did well in their match against Poland so I'm hoping for a good game.
I'm still rooting for my Icelandic vikings but my pessimism is starting to take over... If/when they get eliminated I don't have a horse in this race anymore. :(

I love World Cup years, you don't have to worry about what to watch, you just wake up like "FOOTBALL" :D
As an England fan I'd have to say my fav match was that 6-1 earlier :P
And what a shot from Kroos yesterday omg! I felt for Sweden, Germany were terrible first half and to concede in extra time is always gutting.

bruh the nationwide DESPAIR caused by the loss against germany... i usually don't give a shit abt football but even i was going through it like... i thought all the angsty media coverage was kinda melodramatic and unnecessary but at the same time everytime they replayed that last goal i couldn't help but wince lmfao
i remember i walked out right before kroos was gonna shoot bc i was so nervous like i could just FEEL that smth was gonna go wrong and waddya know😪 can't believe i jinxed it
but also all the drama that happened post-game?? the swedish manager was legit abt to throw hands with german leaders like daaamn if i had known that football was this juicy i would've gotten into it before lol
