Netizens claim this mv looks like it was directed by infamous photographer Rotta himself

1. [+611, -28] What she's basically saying is that her body looks like a little kid's so her music video was not lolita

2. [+502, -69] I saw a short clip of her music video on TV and even I thought it was taking it too far. This all just seems like noise marketing for fame. Funny how she comes out to personally admit that it's "not lolita" because no one cares about her made up controversy ㅋㅋ lolita issues should never be used for noise marketing...

3. [+32, -2] I don't like her voice either, way too nasally... she sounds like a little kid

4. [+31, -6] I read her interview and thought I'd give her the benefit of the doubt but after watching her music video, just wow... ㅋㅋㅋ in it, she's wearing a t-shirt that even chodings wouldn't wear and playing with dolls and toys from a weird angle... really, none of this was planned? That bath scene's a mess too ㅋㅋㅋ she should've just kept her mouth shut...

5. [+31, -6] I got curious so I went to see her music video and I was barely 40 seconds into it when I could already tell all the lolita elements going on;;; nevermind how her body looks, she's in it wearing pigtail braids with innocent expressions and the crossed legs that little kids often do... The music video also has this hazy filter over it that's often used in Japanese shota videos. She really thinks this controversy is about her body? ㅋㅋ Let's be honest, she totally went for the lolita angle

6. [+29, -6] "It's my fault for not being taller and having a curvier body" let's be real, your music video would still be controversial even if you were 170 cm tall

7. [+25, -5] Her voice is unbearable~~

8. [+22, -3] I saw her MV... and I'm just glad she was working with limited funds... because if more money was invested into this, it would've been a bigger mess. She should work on getting fame for her talent, not this.

9. [+14, -3] Her clarification is not enough for all the blatant lolita elements in her MV;;; should've stayed quiet

10. [+10, -2] Kid, that's not what we're talking about... it's your entire concept... your body isn't the issue here

FACT: This comeback was actually product of a crowdfounding campaing. Here few teasers images wellmade yedang shared when asking fans to donate money.

Tbh it was looking like your average K-indie music video until the bathtub scene. And I'm usually a defender of playing with toys and shit in music videos (I collect and still sometimes play with toys and dolls) but the way the camera is angled in some shots did feel more than a little seedy and Rotta-like.

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with "childish" or cute visuals (love kidult-y stuff) but there's a difference between someone having genuine fun with them and someone using them to creative a Britney Spears Rolling Stone cover with it. The extreme case of baby voice definitely doesn't help either.

Basically. Even as a lifelong Britney fan that whole era of her career was mess in the way her and her age were hyper-sexualized and everyone seemed to be a-okay with it. I also love Alicia Silverstone but her early career (before Clueless and a bit after) was built on sexualizing the fact that she was underaged. I remember seeing a picture of her sitting on a stuffed animal with her legs spread over it and everything about the picture just felt wrong.

This is completely off topic but I just felt like talking about it lol.

It's very much on topic as it's now 20 years later and ridiculous that we still have to deal with the same problem - if anything it has gotten worse! Didn't Britney actually speak out later about the fact that she didn't really understand what was happening and feels uncomfortable with it now? There's a difference in adults infantilizing themselves in a sexy way and actual kids being sexualised as adults but it's all part of the same problem.

It sucks so much when you have fond memories of enjoying stuff as a child and then you grow up and catch some subtext or the way it was originally intended and it's just ruined for you. Like every girl's childhood has some idol in it that you look up to and see as a strong role model and then as you grow up you realize how skeezy the way they were being marketed really was. I remember thinking Alicia and Liv were so cool in those Aerosmith videos and then found out they were just teens still -_-.

Don't really wanna watch the mv but that second pic of her in the tub doesn't seem like someone without curves..... um.

Was going to say, she totally looks her age and doesn't have a childlike body at all - it's entirely the styling of the video making her look like a child! Lol I wish that was my "body that isn't full of curves" what kind of ridiculous excuse

this video was super creepy. also the way she sung, she looked and sounded like a little kid (and her playing with toys and the way it was filmed, made it look lolita).

it does look like rotta's work, when I first saw the mv I wondered if he directed it. but I really like her voice and she's really pretty. shrug

i totally see the criticisms and ppl have a right to be bothered by it, but like i was saying in the post about honey popcorn, i prefer not to take an analytical lens to kpop too often. i can see the aesthetic heyne was going for and i'll give her the benefit of the doubt for now

in a bathtub wearing childish clothes and then you can casually see her bra through the shirt

the scene was physically painful

they are right 👀 all those elements that we usually see on shota movies are together here too: weird specific poses in bed/bathtub, stocking, blushed makeup, camera angles , all those 'casually revealing' cute outfits .... kinda creepy in a very rotta-esque way

Having 90's toys in a music video is fine, but when combined with the creepy Rotta-like poses/clothing it started to look really creepy.

one of the few times where i actually agree w netizen's reactions lol. the fact that she came out and defended this made it worse, she's a 25 y o adult promoting this pedophilic imagery

Extremely annoying when you have to agree with men who probably see sex in everything but yeah :/ Broken clock, twice a day I guess

From: [identity profile] yxerin.livejournal.com
no yeah ik, we don't know if this concept was just assigned to her or if she had a part in the process (prob the former). it's the fact that she came out afterward to defend it that bothers me, i don't think anyone forced her to

Right? We're used to this from men and the industry as a whole so that's nothing new if this was written for her - not to disregard the general grossness of this sexualised youth thing as a whole obviously - but her playing into that as an adult (I think she's 25!) makes me think maybe it was her choice as well and she should know better by now. It's really annoying that she's playing dumb and deflecting by writing off criticism as body shaming in the most ridiculous way as she totally looks her age with a womanly body and afaik the general critique was in regards to the way she's portrayed in the video, not people going in on her looks.

If this was self-directed and self-styled, shouldn't she, as a woman, be allowed to express herself the way she likes it? Aren't you guys censoring her feelings in spite of what's PC?

Date: 2018-03-27 12:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] premonitioner.livejournal.com
I'm all for encouraging women to express themselves but not when expressing themselves is encouraging the sexualisation of children, soz. doesn't matter that she's an adult, she's very clearly acting, singing and dressing like a child but she's sexualising it which is not okay.

the industry has enough men pushing for that disgusting nonsense without adult women joining in with it.

Date: 2018-03-27 02:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nekobot.livejournal.com
Yes, this. Also these choices are not made in a vacuum and while it's fair that people don't want to attack her for it directly it is extremely telling that she feels this is the way she should promote herself. Women generally aren't going around acting like sexy toddlers because of our own tastes and ideas - we're doing it because men influence everything around us and they're disgusting about this sort of thing.

It's a slippery slope if we start to correlate everything to that man. Self expression is a marvelous thing that exists, and we can't let it be tarnished by what's happening in the American society. My argument has nothing to do with that. I'm not a woman, so I don't fit in the whole "lolita" fetishism, but I'm a gay man, and, while not the same, the "twink" thing is similar, and maybe I'm not "woke" (hate that expression) enough, but I think people are allowed to sexualize themselves if they want to, in a way that might be seen as "infantile". People have fetishes. Wanting to portray yourself as a lolita or a twink shouldn't be demonized just because pedophiles exist.

This is like the fifth time I click back to this post, and I think I've finally figured out what bothers me the most about her behaviour in this vid: it's the way she imitates the lack of coordination toddlers have with clumsy gestures. When something that is that calculated (you have to deliberately gesture like that, people with better motor skill and coordination don't move like that usually) is combined with the rest of the imagery, it's hard for me to think of it as anything but an intentional lolita play.

From: [identity profile] spainawards2008.livejournal.com
YES! I couldn't work out a way to describe it but lack of coordination is what it is. She isn't just playing with toys, which would fine, she acts (and sounds. Does she always sound like that?) like a little kid specifically.
