Of course IU was the only kpop artist listed (only asian in the list actually), of course Palette is the only non-english lyrics in the entire ranking .... New York Times uaena certified!
only asian in the list actually charli xcx is half-indian, op!
i didn't really like this list, ngl: a lot of it was very safe and even tho it's the nyt i was very... waka_flocka_ok.gif @ it. i'm glad iu got name-checked, tho! but since a lot of the songs were album tracks, they could've gone for a different one (like “jam jam” if they wanted to use a more classic pop! song)
also yessss @ “out of my head” getting what she deserves. “delicious (ft. tommy cash)” would've been my top choice... pop music staying as stale as this list isn't going anywhere, ugh
That's a really stupid comparison lmao. Charli Xcx can claim Asian as an identity given that she has a Gujrati mother, it doesn't matter if it's only half her identity. Same as how many mixed black people solely identify as black. If you want to say that Charli doesn't count as an Asian representative since she's born/raised/a citizen of the U.K, that makes sense.
Muslim on the other hand is not an ethnicity, people from any continent can be Muslim. Sza is not "half-muslim", she says she practices Islam so she's Muslim, period. You can't tell the difference between a religion and ethnicity and here you are trying to be a smart-ass lmao
Did you really click on my icons and scroll down to try and desperately find something to drag me with?
The joke started when you included inaccurate information in the main post, and then when you were nicely told that it was wrong you started on erasing peoples heritage and referring to being Muslim as a race. I'd find your ignorance funny if it weren't so sad and insulting.
you wish i had that much dedicaion im a certified omona lurker for years, just your name reminds me the worst side of got7 fandom no need to scroll down anything ... you have a very good record in omona tho
So you don't have the dedication to look through my icons, but you do have the dedication to remember some possible off-hand comment I made about JB? The embarrassment continues. I'm interested to hear how I'm a noted representative of a group I've barely commented about, and when I have it's been (mostly) negative.
You don't keep track of fandoms, but with absolute certainty you claimed I was a Got7 fan, and that I have a "very good record" on Omona.. okay.
Also, you said you lurked Omona for years and yet in your profile you claimed to be a new kpop fan? Which is it sis? Or are you grasping at straws because you've dug yourself into a hole that you don't have any of the skills or equipment to get out of?
When Lindsey found a way to turn a K-pop question on Who Weekly toward IU I knew she was a stan but I didn't expect this lol. I love Palette especially in relation to 23, it's like the grown up sequel and I'm glad she didn't drop those themes after how much of a mess that era~ became.
Fuse include Palette between the best pop albums around the world on 2017

i don't listen to who weekly but i do keep up with the new york times' music section so this was a bit huh until i realized i don't know lindsey weber which makes sense, she isn't a regular
the britney comparison is a stretch, if she wanted to put iu into a western context or have a western comparison so western (or western non-koreans?) know where iu is coming from, she could find a better comparison
and then the red velvet comment? which would need to bring in the discussion between idols vs artists.
maybe it's bc palette isn't my fav, maybe it's bc i have western fake-kpop interest fatigue, maybe i just don't agree that it truly shows the future of music (just the present?) but this doesn't feel genuine and more of a "well we need someone from the "kpop world" to show how forward thinking we are (and bts is too mainstream)"
you're right. taylor's probably the best better fit and also bc both taylor and iu have struggled w expressions of sexuality within their music. taylor's 28 but only on this last album did she start referring to sex, i think, and iu tries to subtly touch on the subject but i think her sexiest "concept" so far has been playing that one role in the producer, where it was a fictional world so she was "allowed". it was like everyone having their cake and getting to eat it too for a moment
thinking about it more, it's actually so funny to use iu as an example of where the future is going when half of her career is remaking old songs. but if i had to pick a song that could represent more, maybe red shoes? even if it's a homage to theatrics and old hollywood and might contradict my last point. it was v ambitious and not another safe ballad
i mean I wouldnt expect someone writing this to actually do any research but they kinda missed the point of the song entirely AND act like singer-songwriters are rare in... a whole country.... when maybe the biggest acts that are popular with normal people (not middle-schoolers) are kinda... all singer-songwriters in styling if not in practise? LIke i know you saw BTS on TV and and 20 seconds of momoland scrolling on facebook but its not like....... the actual material reality of the music industry of a literal whole country.
they just wanted to talk about themselves and compare themselves to IU and act like theyre young when theyre literally in their 30's lmfao lame
plus, it shows that this person is under the impression that korean music = kpop when kpop is itself and then there's korean indie or khiphop, etc.
the amount of western music critics and reporters that understand kpop to it's actual degree is so small that the editor of kpop articles in non-kpop sites is always basically like *shrugs* "they must know more than me, so i'll trust them", while i think the writers are always just a bit too excited to include their interest in a publication, they don't want to admit they don't know as much as they're being treated like they do
