"The Handmaiden" by South Korean director Park Chan-wook has picked up the trophy for the best non-English film at the 71st British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The Korean erotic thriller received the award at the 2018 BAFTA Awards ceremony held at Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday (local time).

The film was one of the five nominees for the prize, along with "Elle" by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, Angelina Jolie's "First They Killed My Father," Russia's "Loveless" and the Iranian film "The Salesman."

Loosely based on Sarah Waters' Victorian lesbian crime novel "Fingersmith," the Korean film tells the story of a young maid hired by a con man to seduce a wealthy heiress, only to fall in love with her.

The erotic thriller starring Kim Min-hee, Cho Jin-woong, Ha Jung-woo and Kim Tae-ri was in competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival in 2016. It won Best Foreign Picture and Best Production Design from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) in December the same year.

What do you mean by “most british”? You mean the cinematography or plot or?

the plot is obviously very british, so i think that's the main thing.
and then the minor part of it is that korean movies don't tend to be stricly following one genre, while this one is.

Congrats to a korean film winning! But Im still hesitant to see it because it might be male gazey

The sex scenes are pretty graphic and there's definitely a lot of female nudity so the argument about the movie being male gazey is definitely a valid one and i understand your concerns. But there's also a lot to like about the movie and the female characters in the movie are great. I would suggest watching the movie and just forwarding through any scenes you don't find comfortable.

The movie is fantastic! Like the user above said, the sex scenes are pretty graphic but Park Chan-wook shot the scenes quickly with drones and an only female staff so that the actresses would be comfortable.

you don't have to worry, there's literally a scene that criticises the male gaze (at least in my opinion it does). the sex scenes are actually quite tasteful for how graphic they are
