Jessica talks about her new skincare line and beauty secrets

She’s reached K-pop icon status, is a bona fide style influencer, and has successfully crossed over as an actress on both screen and stage. Oh, did we mention her business chops as the creative force behind Blanc & Eclare’s ready-to-wear, accessories, and now skincare line? We may not be blessed with K-pop skin, but we can care for it like Jessica Jung. Here, we get the inside scoop on her beauty secrets, desert island must-haves, and skin concerns (as if!).

She’s a world-famous singer, having made her musical debut as the first member of K-pop’s iconic Girls’ Generation. She’s an actress both on screen and on stage. She’s a designer and a businesswoman. At this point, it almost sounds trivial to mention that she’s also hosted a beauty program, starred in a reality TV show, and is a style icon to 6.8 million followers on Instagram.

But Jessica Jung — who made Forbes‘ 2017 list of 30 Under 30 Asia and who is often featured in Vogue as well as the front row of fashion weeks around the world — is hardly done yet. The 27-year-old multi-hyphenate recently added beauty entrepreneur to her long, enviable list of accomplishments with the launch of her Serein skincare line under her Blanc & Eclare label. (The brand is already a popular ready-to-wear and eyewear line, with a flagship store in New York City and available in over 70 retail locations around the world.)

And so I did. I’ve been testing out the line for a few weeks now. Sure, I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. After all, we here in the States are no strangers to celeb-produced beauty (think Gwyneth’s Goop, Jessica’s Honest Company, Jennifer’s Living Proof), some of which are more legit than others. So imagine my surprise when — wow, this stuff is pretty good. Wait, it’s actually really good.

So what’s behind this skincare line that makes it so good? And is it really the secret (besides genetics) to Jessica’s amazing skin? Here, we kept it simple and grilled asked Jessica about her skincare routine because #omgcanwepleasehaveyourskin.

Q: You’re Korean so you must have gotten into skincare at a young age. Describe your first introduction to skincare.

Jessica Jung: I did get into skincare at a relatively young age. Because of the demands of my career, I learned the importance of taking good care of your skin very early on.

Q: What is your skin type and do you have any skin concerns? (Based on your Vogue video, I doubt you do, but I have to ask! 😁)

Jessica: Thank you! But I do have one major skin concern — I have very dry skin.

Q: What are some beauty secrets or special skincare tips that you use or have learned on the job?

Jessica: Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more! Keeping skin well moisturized is the key to healthy skin. Also, I never skip cleansing and my skincare routine at the end of the day. Even when I’m traveling or working late nights, I am devoted to my skincare routine.

Q: You’re known as a style icon. Why did you want to start a skincare line?

Jessica: I knew right away that skincare was going to be an important part of my brand. It’s my passion. I’m so particular about what I’m looking for in a skincare regimen, so the idea of creating a skincare line that could be adapted to my lifestyle was irresistible.

Q: When you first thought about creating your skincare line, what were some factors you thought this line must have, whether ingredients, design, or formulation?

Jessica: For the first collection, Serein, I wanted it to be focused on hydration since dryness is an issue for me. I wanted to create something that is natural and classic, not driven by crazy trends or extreme ingredients. It’s similar to my fashion line in that way.

Q: What are some things you look for in your skincare products, whether it’s ingredients, texture, or scent?

Jessica: I’m very particular about the ingredients, especially since my skin is on the sensitive side. I wanted to focus on pure, simple ingredients that also were effective. Also, I strongly believe skincare should be an enjoyable experience from the texture to the fragrance — even the packaging should feel like a luxury.
I am especially concerned about texture, especially for moisturizing ingredients. Rich hydration is the key, but I don’t like it when the product is too rich and then peels off when I apply makeup. For the Serein Moisturizing Cream, the formula is incredibly hydrating. It will keep my skin moisturized all day, but the consistency is so lightweight and absorbs really fast.

Q: A key ingredient in your skincare line is Tasmanian rainwater. How did you find out about this ingredient and why did you put it in your line?

Jessica: The Serein line is based on the concept of purity, especially when it comes to ingredients. I knew about Tasmania and that it was this exceptionally pristine region, so I asked our research lab to look more into the water as a base ingredient. What we found was that the rainwater in Tasmania not only contained fewer impurities but also contained a lot of rich minerals that were beneficial for the skin.

Q: What Blanc & Eclare skincare products do you use every day? What other brands or products do you love and use?

Jessica: Every night, I use the Serein Robust Ampoule Serum. The texture is so silky smooth. It’s like an extra shot of hydration in my skincare routine, and it keeps my skin bright.
When I travel, I always carry the Serein Hydrating Mist as a skin refresher. I also use face oil from Darphin for an extra glow.

Q: If you had to recommend one or two must-try products from your skincare line to readers, which would it be and why?

Jessica: I would recommend any of the Serein Luxury Masks. I love to end the day with a sheet mask. The Hydrating Luxury Mask is my favorite. The texture is so velvety — it’s so soothing and my skin feels extra nourished afterward. I would also recommend the Serein Robust Ampoule Serum. It’s been an amazing booster for keeping my skin texture smooth and bright.

Q: If you could only take one beauty item, one fashion item, and one other item with you on a desert island, what would they be and why?

Jessica: For the beauty product, I would take sunscreen. For the fashion item, I would bring a pair of sunglasses for style and practical purposes. And for the last item, I would bring my phone so that I can listen to music and stay connected with the world.

Q: Will you be adding more products to your beauty line, and if so, what?

Jessica: Yes, we have so many more products in the research and development phase. I’ll continue to focus on skincare, since that is my passion, but also body care. I don’t want to share too much, but we have some exciting launches this year!

Q: You do so much in your career! As you get older, are you finding that one aspect of your career (say, designer, businesswoman, or actor) resonates more with you than others and why?

Jessica: Music and fashion are my two biggest passions. I do get creative fulfillment from both career paths, in different but complementary ways. I am enjoying the process and new challenges of juggling the two facets of my career. It would be hard to say one resonates more than the other! I just feel so grateful to be able to pursue both of my dreams.

Alcohol denatured is not necessarily an ingredient of concern. Unless it’s listed within the first three ingredients, it’s usually there as a stabilizer, emulsifier and/or antibacterial Agent.

no skincare item is worth more than $30 though unless it’s a cosmetically elegant physical sunscreen. Like if you are going to splurge because you want a miracle, see a derm for Tretinoin, tri-luma, or save up for lasers tbh lol

I feel like the price is about on par with face care stuff that's a step above drug store brand. Not saying it's worth it, but it's on par if not somewhat cheaper than some brands. It'll be interesting to see the reviews when they start coming in.

I need to step up my face care game. My skins starting to look it's age. I'm considering Korean face care but I'm slightly iffy because my face doesn't like half the stuff I try on it.

meh, I haven't tried it, but 10 steps is to many. i'm fully on board with a gently, daily exfoliant (probably chemical), and some nutrients, but otherwise, hydrate, protect, and shed skin (aka exfoliant.)

This is true. I'd probably only do so many, even though that's kinda half assed. I have problems exfoliating, even with gentle exfoliators. My face always freaks out and even if I give it time it still reacts badly. I had a clarisonic for awhile and god that was brutal on my skin. I should go to a dermatologist but the products they'd want me to buy would be way too much.

Yes! I swear I need to find out Xiumin's youth secrets. His skin is pretty much perfect, save for recently had one blemish. That's sad I know these things.

I am sure his skin secrets is going to the dermie regularly, loads of makeup, and if necessary pills. I wouldn't mind having their skin, either, but i suspect they all have a weekly appointment with a facialists/dermie that exfoliates, etc.

if your skin is that sensitive then good luck. I rather like the Paula's Choice stuff for non-drugstore, but otherwise it's all cetaphil stuff. I bet you don't go in the sun, so you're probably set.

really? that sucks. I haven't bought anything in about a year (shit lasts forever) but I love the daily chemical exfoliant (BHA exfoliant). I'm running low on it. And I like her Daily Skin Clearing Treatment because it doesn't stress my skin. I'll have to look closer at her prices. I can give up her other stuff easily. I do think her tinted moisterizer is overpriced -- it feels like silk but the coverage and sunscreen are too light.

for example, the new clinical ceramide enriched moisturizer costs 58 bucks in the US but 62€ (= 78 dollar) in europe. for the same amount and ingredients. when i first bought her BHA exfoliant like 2 years ago it was 10 bucks cheaper than now. plus the service here is awful, they have great customer service but you barely get any samples (you cant even choose them) and the discount codes every now and then are a joke because they raise the prices days before they are available. many skincare fans decided to stop purchasing her products

oh no. Dude, that so sucks. I can't get behind $58 night cream. I've been using her resist antioxidant serum and I'm not convinced it's really doing anything. I'm not convinced most of those serum things do. And don't think a good moisterizer needs to be crazy expensive.

I actually forgot that they showed his skincare of Blankets and I looked it up. He uses Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap in Lavender (idk for his face or body because it's an all use soap), and Dermalift products (which are nearly impossible to find online expect in a kit w/ sampls).

I have to go in the sun smetimes but I can't a lot of times. I'll check out Paula's choice.

Oh btw a Exo-L Japan Magazine w/ questions to the members came out and Xiumin says he's dieting. idk why but that pisses me off because every time on of Exo members say dieting it really means starving and killing themselves at the gym. dude, using lavendar on your skin sounds not so bueno. I'm sure Dermalift is fine, but so many brands are, plus they're so $$$. it's so hard to find something that works, but if your skin is sensitive ... I use mostly drugstore, because I am vain but I am also cheap.

I can hardly afford drugstore anymore. Which is why my face is having a freak out recently. But idk drugstores never really worked for me. I was always jealous of my friends who could use Nuetrogena to clear up their acne and I had bad acne until I had a job and could afford clinique. My face is the definition of broke with expensive taste.

Seriously. It kind of makes me side eye him. And who the fuck wants to go on a date marathon? idk he seems like one of those type of diet healthy type people and that's kind of a turn off for me. I'm not a fan of neutrogena. i have a friend with sensitive skin who uses castor oil, sometimes mixed with some honey shit, and her skin has gotten a lot better. I think it all sounds messy, but she is a social worker and tries to keep money down.

I guess it upsets me a little because when they revealed Sehuns ab's at the first concert he talked about how he suffered to get them. He only ate chicken for a couple months and he'd beg for food, or maybe he begged to smell their food. idk, don't quite remember. And they got him a pizza to eat. idk just seeing Sehun go through that you'd think he'd kind of care more and stop trying that hard. idk where this comes from either, because last year he said he wouldn't diet like that anymore because it was to hard on his body.


I wish I could home make stuff and be crafty and thrifty like that, but I'm terrible about it. And some of the oils or essences they want you to use are ridiculously expensive. A lot of them call for coconut oil and that's around $6 for a small jar.

people buy the crap out of belif aqua bomb and look at the ingredients. i think skin-feel is one of the most important criteria of for a product to become popular (and marketing, ofc) because for a lot of people temporary smooth skin = good.

Belif Aqua Bomb is one of the most hyped k-beauty products in western media and for a $38 cream these are the first 8 ingredients:
Water, Dipropylene Glycol, Glycerin, Methl Trimethicone, Alcohol Denat, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, 1,2-Hexanediol.

After that you get a bunch of plant extracts, MORE silicones, and finally minuscule amounts of ceramides and cholesterol that are actually good for the skin. The formula is predominantly very cheap ingredients and potentially irritating alcohol which shouldn't cost $38 - that's my main issue. They are charging customers for marketing and branding. I wouldn't even buy this for $5 tbh. You can get better formulated stuff at the drugstore (or from other Korean or Japanese brands) that contain ingredients that benefit the skin. Or similar formulas for actually $5.

Methyl Trimethicone, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane = silicones that provide that nice, slippery, smooth feel to the skin, also acts as a lightweight barrier (occlusive) that prevents moisture loss. Often found in conditioner as well as primers/foundations.
1,2-Hexanediol = preservative
Water is water and alcohol is alcohol, lol.

There's nothing inherently wrong with these ingredients. I just think the company is charging too much for what it is.

I had the same feeling when I used cotton pads to dap the product into my skin, it wouldn't go on as thick as it does with my hands with alot would be left in the pad and that's just a sheer waste of product :P

I guess it's a mental thing, mostly. Too many articles read about how you ~destroy~ the underlaying skins cells if you rub too much etc. and now I'm afraid to do so in case I end up aiding my skin in aging too soon lmao
