Fans have noticed that Momoland's latest smash hit sounds quite similar to the hit from the russian trio that was released in 2014. Now (actually 2 weeks ago) Serebro themselves have pointed out the similarity by uploading the BOOM BOOM video on their instagram account.

Пока в России байтят мировые хиты, мир понемногу байтит нас🤯 #mimimi #serebro
(Trans by Hannas @ one hallyu: While Russia is plagiarizing world hits, the world is plagiarizing us.)

Fun fact: Momoland have actually covered MiMiMi before.

What do you think OMONA, do these two songs sound alike?

idk where this trend of calling things skinny as a synonym for good/cool came from but can someone explain how it's not fatphobic

i fucking hate this new trend. i follow a lot of 'fashion' twitter accounts and it pisses me off so bad and aside from fatphobic it also sounds so harmful. it gives me flashbacks to the mia/ana accounts

thanks for recognizing that. i had a feeling it was from a meme, but especially now that it's totally out of the original context it's getting out of hand.

it’s supposed to be an overtly ironic play on beauty standards, like all the memes of mariah being photoshopped to be stick thin. obviously that’s all just the face value of it and when you look at it deeper, it does read undeniably fatphobic

Hmm.

I mean, there are similarities in terms of instrumentation but the melodies and chord progressions are different.

I mean, it's definitely "inspired" by "Mi Mi Mi", and I would call it a knock-off of that song, but that isn't plagiarism.

Not that I'm an anti, but Sunmi's "Heroine" is more suspect (wasn't there a styling copy issue as well?).

the only item that is similar is that one hat and it's not even the same hat, so, no.

From: [identity profile] sks2k5.livejournal.com
Ahh, good to know. I just remember reading about the hat on various blogs. Thanks for letting me know!

(And my earlier comment has two sentences that start the same, ugh.)

Yeah, people are saying that even the mv is stolen but that's a reach lmao (I'm annoyed that people are blowing this out of proportion re: styling...when it's really just one hat. The song however is plagiarized ofc)

Idk is it plagiarism if it sounds similar for briefly a few seconds?? Western music is huge and ubiquitous, it’s bound to inspire a few beats subconsciously or not here and there

From: [identity profile] daceymormont.livejournal.com
Tbh I'm not an expert in these things but in heroine's case it's more than just a few seconds though, the prechorus and chorus sound a lot like fftl
But according to dispatch teddy put in enough differences to get away with plagiarism lol but you can't deny he obviously got inspired

idk how anyone can deny it tbh... that particular chord progression isn't very common in mainstream modern pop music, and the tempo and structure of the syllables on the beat etc is almost identical to Fight For Your Love. It's not enough to get in legal trouble but it's very obvious where he got the idea from, even if he plagiarized it unintentionally (which is infuriatingly easy to do, even for great songwriters lol).

Yeah ikr? Sunmi is my favorite so I wish it wasn't the case but you really can't deny that the prechorus and chorus are a carbon copy. I'm pissed bc this is reflecting so bad on sunmi even though she didn't take part in producing/composing.

Teddy is such a fraud and I hope she stops working with him for this smh

I can definitely see how they are similar but they're not the exact same

Damn that’s blatant 😮

I def feel like they wanted their own MiMi and that’s how we got Bboom Bboom.

Having a past performance/cover act as the smoking gun of sorts is something I haven’t seen with plagiarism accusations before so it’s kind of interesting lol

I’m also curious as to how that would work out if MiMi was the inspiration. Like is it normal for a label to request that a song sound similar to another and the producer just makes it? Why did they wait so long to release their own MiMi when they were fond of that type of sound since 2016? How long does it even take to put together a song like this?

This is making me think too much and I should have just left my comment as that first sentence/my initial reaction cause the rest of what I wrote contributes nothing really lol.

The acoustic guitar at the beginning but even that isn’t even close 🙄. If anything, shinsadog tiger plagiarized himself (listen to Exid - are you hungry) and his signature cheeky flowery EDM sound where there are 5 diff melodies in one song has been his signature since making hits for t-ara

Somehow the songs remind me of each other imo (esp when you listen to them back to back) but idk if it's really a case of plagiarizing...

Ppl saying they don't hear it (or that they don't hear any similarity w/ Heroine) makes me think non-musicians must not have good ears for this lol not only can you hear the inspiration from MiMiMi loud and clear, they even covered it which means it was definitely a conscious, intentional homage to the original - they sound similar on purpose. It's not necessarily plagiarism but if you don't hear any resemblance between the two, you have zero ear for music imo.

Boom Boom > Mi Mi Mi

BB reminded me of somethig, but I couldn't point it out. I see the similarities, but while Mi Mi Mi was awful, Boom Boom is not.

eh it's definitely similar/inspired but not enough to call it plagiarism. i would just say they're the same subgenre/style.

If Omona hadn't pointed out, I wouldn't have noticed, and I absolutely love Serebro (and especially Mi Mi Mi). The songs are similar, sure, but I think "plagiarism" is a bit too much. More like "inspiration".

Isn't Shinsadong Tiger well known for copying melodies?

There was the case of EXID's Whoz That Girl vs Guy Sebastian's Who's That Girl, for instance.

In this case the chorus to Bboom Bboom is really similar too MiMiMi, just changed a little bit to avoid being an exact copy. And the "Wow Wow" part is really similar to MiMiMi too. The best you can say is that Bboom Bboom adds a couple new parts (pre-chorus, rap bridge) that are not copied from MiMiMi.

If this isn't plagiarism it's only because Shinsadong Tiger is smart with his copying.
