“I needed a turning point,” Jo-kwon admitted during an afternoon press conference for his new song “Lonely” at Blue Square in Seoul.

“I did not think it was a big issue for me, but I was at JYP since I was a child. And I had been there for 16 years.” He continues breaking down why he left the agency he made his debut from with 2AM. “But, I thought, I have shown everything I could show at JYP in those 16 years. I was so happy and thankful, but I needed a turning point,” he said.

Last year Jo-kwon decided not to renew his contract with JYP Entertainment after 16 years. Later, after about a month Jo-kwon revealed that he had signed an exclusive agreement with Cube Entertainment. His decision to sign with the agency was mainly motivated by his friendship with the CEO. Moreover, although he was staring over at a new company, Jo-kwon said that it was not uncomfortable. “Actually, while 2AM had a contracted with JYP Entertainment, our management was with Cube Entertainment! So When I moved to Cube, I felt as if I had returned home without any embarrassment.”

I thought Big Hit was in charge of them back then? That's why he had his solo debut with them and Changmin signed with them when their contract with JYP expired. I'm confused, lol.

I'm a bit confused too! I know that some JYP artists have different management companies handling some of their activities and its been mentioned many times before that it was Big Hit doing that for 2AM. Maybe at some point it was CUBE then it changed to Big Hit? Coz Jo Kwon mentioned before that when 2AM made their debut with "This Song', Papa Hong (Hong Seung Sung) took good care of them.

Edit: found the translated portion of the interview. Jo Kwon did say they were under CUBE first then later on moved to Big Hit.

That makes sence. I never paid them attention so closely, so I didn't know they were first managed by cube, I just remember when Jokwon debuted as a soloist "under" Big hit I was all like "What? Aren't they from JYP?", and that's when I read about them being managed by Big Hit, and I just assumed they have always been managed by Big hit and JYP, lol.

If i remember correctly 2am debuted in 2008 where they were under JYP but managed by cube entertainment when it was like a subsidiary to JYP. I dont think it lasted very long tho. The whole big hit thing happened in 2010-2014 then they were managed by JYP again(kinda lol).

I've always thought Jo Kwon would be doing something similar to Kangta (in SMent) in JYP's future.

Anyways, as someone who loves CUBE babies, I'm happy Jo Kwon decided to sign with CUBE and right now I think he's very happy too. I read translated parts of his interview and he's so honest =)

Yeah I'm looking forward to it! He did say that he was given the freedom to choose his comeback song and concept but he didnt want to do something so different on his first comeback with CUBE. He said he'll do different concepts whenever and whatever he's comfortable with.
