Following numerous issues during the December 24 broadcast of “Hwayugi,” tvN has apologized to its viewers.

While the commercial breaks are normally only supposed to last a minute, they went on for an unexpected long amount of time [over 10 minutes] during this broadcast, showing trailers for upcoming drama “Mother” and variety program “Youn’s Kitchen”. In addition to these commercials, clips from script reading sessions for “Mother” and “Youn’s Kitchen” were shown instead of returning back to “Hwayugi.” During all of this, there was a caption that read, “The broadcast is being delayed due to internal issues within the broadcasting company. We ask for your understanding as the broadcast will continue shortly.”

While “Hwayugi” eventually began airing normally again, the broadcast was abruptly cut altogether at around 10:38 p.m. KST with an announcement from tvN through a caption. It read, “We will be ending this broadcast due to internal issues.”

There were also problems with the episode itself. Viewers noticed several issues that were not resolved in post-production. During the scene where Oh Yeon Seo‘s character is auditioning, wires holding up the “demons” could still be seen, although such things are normally erased through CG. Other examples include visible wires holding up picture frames, and a green screen that was not edited out.

tvN officially apologized for these issues, stating, “The broadcast of the second episode of ‘Hwayugi’ on December 24 did not go smoothly due to delays in post-production. We would like to sincerely apologize for making viewers feel uncomfortable, and we will do everything possible to make sure an incident like this does not happen again.”

Explaining how the production crew has been giving it their all while filming and editing in order to make a high-quality drama, tvN continued, “While they tried their best to complete everything within a short amount of time, the production crew’s passion and ambition unfortunately led to the huge mistake that was [today’s] broadcasting accident. We will learn from today’s mistake and make sure to make it up to the viewers with better broadcasts.”

As it was cut and did not air fully, the second episode of “Hwayugi” was reedited and rebroadcast on December 25.

tvN’s latest Saturday-Sunday drama “Hwayugi” premiered this weekend with highs and lows.

After a strong start with its first episode, many viewers looked forward to watching the second. However, the second episode aired with numerous issues that resulted in the episode being cut from air altogether during the second half of its broadcast.

tvN issued an apology and announced that the re-edited second episode would be broadcasted on December 25. On December 25, tvN issued an official press release regarding the broadcasts of episodes 3 and 4.

After reiterating their apology, tvN said, “‘Hwayugi’ began filming at the beginning of October, and we are currently in the process of filming footage for the sixth episode.”

“We are currently using a system of working on CG [computer graphics] as fast as we can for footage that has already been filmed and edited. However, as ‘Hwayugi’ involves a lot more monsters and exorcisms compared to other productions, there is a lot of footage that involves high-level CG. The broadcasting accident occurred because the CG work for the second half of episode 2 took more time than originally scheduled.”

tvN announced, “We have decided to push back episode 4, which was originally scheduled to air on December 31. Episode 3 will air on [December] 30 at 9 p.m. and episode 4 will air next week on January 6 at 9 p.m. KST.”

What a mess. They obviously should have pushed back the premiere if they weren't ready to air. It's worrying that this is already happening in the first week. I'll put up a discussion post for the first two eps in the next day or two if you guys want one.

i didn't know they pushed back episode 4 too. them starting filming in october and only being on ep 6 which will air in two weeks seems...worrying. i'll be really sad if the scheduling ends up ruining this show. The previews all looked great and the first ep was really good.

This reminds me of King of Dramas where they still doing the editing while the drama is being broadcasted on TV. The scheducling for Kdramas are really crazy

MESS. Also I watched ep 1 and enjoyed it, but I still don't understand why TVN episodes run sooooo long. 90 minutes x2 a week is daunting, like the run time made watching Goblin and the Reply series suchhh a drag.

The first episode was pretty good, sad to know there were issues already so early. Maybe if dramas stopped shooting the first few episodes and instead finished the whole thing or edited at least half the season before premiere these things wouldn't happen.

maybe if they didn’t insist on almost movie length episodes there would be less pressure on the post-production?

yikes how stressful it must be behind the scenes if they are editing this stuff while the show is on the air and counting on the 10 mins commercial to buy them time. That's not a good sign. They should have just added a short drama special in between or a Christmas variety if they are not ready. Better yet, instead of making us wait another week for ep 4 why not just make the show 60 mins each instead of 90 mins so its more spread out and you don't have to do too much CGI.

oh wow.... i have seen stuff happen, but like, airing unfinished material....? what were they thinking, like were they exporting stuff while the same was airing?

i wouldn't want to be at those allnighters that the post-production team must be doing atm

why did they rush premiering the drama when they're not ready, they could've started it a little bit later

this sucks, the story and cast seems great so do all the effects but the extrem tight schedule, broadcasting mistakes and the accident are so horrible (that poor man, i feel so bad for him ;___;), why the extreme pressure to push this drama out with lightning speed? they should have known from the start that a fantasy drama like this would have taken lots of editing time and stunt time etc,

I was interested in drama but haven't actually checked it yet. The fail tag is very accurate in this one.
