BoA's brother and director Kwon Soon-wook dies of cancer

Music video director Kwon Soon-wook, who is also the brother of K-pop star BoA, died, Sunday, at the age of 39.

The director's older brother, pianist Kwon Soon-hwon, shared the news on his social media on the day, saying "director Kwon passed away at 12:17 a.m. on Sept. 5."

Announcing that the funeral will take place with only close relatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he added, "We ask for your warm condolences and wish him to rest in peace."

In May, the director revealed that he has been battling terminal cancer, sharing his worsening health condition through social media.

Drama angers viewers by using actual news footage of building collapse

SBS's hit drama "The Penthouse: War in Life 3" used actual news footage of a building collapse in Gwangju in a scene depicting the cave-in of a luxury apartment on last Friday's episode of the TV drama. This has raised fury from viewers and especially the bereaved family members of the accident that occurred on June 9 of this year. The row is not subsiding despite an apology issued by the broadcaster.

In the episode, a high-rise apartment in the drama collapses when a bomb set by one of lead characters detonates. The actual accident in Gwangju involved a five-story building that was being demolished that collapsed onto a bus idling at a stop near the construction site. Nine people were killed and eight were seriously injured.

For a scene showing residents of the apartment staying in a temporary shelter, the production team used actual news footage of residents of Pohang taking shelter at a gym following a magnitude-5.4 earthquake on Nov. 15, 2017. The Pohang earthquake injured 92 people and left 1,800 others homeless.

Star filmmakers head to small screen

A growing number of filmmakers are choosing to direct dramas on the small screen due to the expansion of Over The Top (OTT) services resulting from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the movie industry.

Director Hur Jin-ho, who is known for leading romance films "Christmas in August" and period film "Forbidden Dream," made his TV directorial debut with JTBC's new melodrama, "Lost," which started its run, Saturday.

The melodrama, starring Cannes award-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and actor Ryu Jun-yeol, got off to a good start with a 4.2 percent viewership rating. It follows the story of two ordinary people who feel adrift in life and encounter each other making their lives better.

The director revealed that he had not expected to direct a TV series.

China's entertainment regulations to affect the K-Pop industry

The Chinese government's attempts to regulate its entertainment sector will affect the K-pop industry, because China is the top source of revenue for Korea's leading entertainment agencies.

The Cyberspace Administration of China issued a notice on Aug. 27 saying it will implement 10 measures to improve fan culture, including the scrapping of ranking entertainers and halting paid voting systems on entertainment TV shows.

Right after the notice was announced, Tencent's music streaming service, QQ Music, restricted customers from purchasing more than one copy of an album online.

Total exports of K-pop albums in July this year surged 3.6 times year-on-year to $26 million (30.7 billion won). Sales coming from China reached $8.25 million, which was the biggest amount ever. But the Chinese regulation is expected to affect this trend, while local securities firms say they will have to see the actual impact of the regulations during the third quarter of this year before estimating monetary losses.

Amid skyrocketing housing prices, viewers are increasingly turning cynical toward some reality TV shows that peek into luxurious homes and lifestyles of celebrities.

MBC's reality show "I Live Alone," also known as "Home Alone," is one of them. Following the lives of celebrity singles, it has been one of the broadcaster's biggest hits. Its website introduces the program as aiming at forming a "social consensus" on single-person households whose number totals 4.5 million, which has become a major new trend in the country.

However, viewers complain that the celebrities shown on the program these days live vastly different lives from theirs and that the stars do not depict the reality ordinary singles often face.
