The director's older brother, pianist Kwon Soon-hwon, shared the news on his social media on the day, saying "director Kwon passed away at 12:17 a.m. on Sept. 5."
Announcing that the funeral will take place with only close relatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he added, "We ask for your warm condolences and wish him to rest in peace."
In May, the director revealed that he has been battling terminal cancer, sharing his worsening health condition through social media.
He said he was recently diagnosed with stage four peritoneal cancer and has been suffering from peritonitis and severe weight loss from an intestinal obstruction, despite undergoing surgery in December.
"I can't believe why and how this is happening to me. I feel like it's a dream, but every morning when I wake up, I'm faced with this reality," he wrote on his Instagram. "As I feel my body losing its functions, I've lost much faith. But, I'm still trying to seek every treatment possible and to not lose hope until the last moment."
After debuting as a music video director in 2005, the director established his own video production company called Metaoloz. He has worked on various artists' music videos, including K-pop girl group Girls' Day's "Twinkle Twinkle," Red Velvet's "Be Natural," and MAMAMOO's "Piano Man."
He also helmed two web series, "Bong Soon: a Cyborg in Love" (2016) and "Boram, love is worth waiting" (2019).
