Jung Hae In recently appeared in the SBS drama “While You Were Sleeping” as Han Woo Tak, a police officer in love with the female protagonist (played by Suzy). So many viewers fell in love with his character that he earned the nickname “Cause of Second Lead Syndrome.”

Jung Hae In surprised reporters with his humility even as he jumps quickly from one project to the next—the in-demand actor has been cast in the upcoming drama “Wise Prison Life,” produced by Shin Won Ho of the famous “Reply” series, and he is also starring in the film “Conspiracy—Age of Rebellion,” (OP note: movie trailer is in this post) which will be released on November 23. Notably, the film is his first leading role.

The 29-year-old actor recently said in an interview that he doesn’t believe his surge in popularity will last for long. “My current trend status? Popularity? I’m so grateful for such words, but to be honest, I know that it will fade soon,” he said laughingly. “I’m in no rush [to prove myself as an actor]. I want to take it slow, step by step, and travel down the right path.”

Speaking about his newfound fame, Jung Hae In commented, “I’m very grateful that people are taking an interest in me. I’m the type to often search for articles about myself and check the comments, so seeing that there a lot of people who responded positively makes me both happy and embarrassed.”

Although he debuted at a relatively late age for an actor, Jung Hae In has accomplished a great deal in a career of just three years. He remarked that he believed his late debut helped him as an actor, explaining, “I think I was able to start acting without feeling nervous or rushed [about my career] because I had already started so late. So I was free from worrying over whether a work [that I was in] would do well or not.”

He continued, “To be honest, I try not to be affected by whether my reviews are good or bad at the moment—I want to be steadfast and keep going no matter what. I think that’s necessary, in order to do this job for a long time.”

On November 15, actor Jung Hae In took part in an interview for his upcoming film, “Conspiracy – Age of Rebellion.”

He first opened up about debuting at an older age. He explained, “I went to mandatory military service when I was 21 years old [Korean reckoning]. Some other male actors may be jealous since I’ve already gone. I’ve even finished with the reserve forces. But there really isn’t much to be jealous about, since the army is just another place for people to live. Those with a lot of wealth and fame may not want to go, as it creates a long resting period.”

Jung Hae In stated that he had a taste of acting through musicals in his first year of college, then he went to the army straight after. He commented that the two years in the army were a “very precious time” for him. He explained that it was a turning point that helped him understand what he had to do, and it made him think more realistically about his life, which was acting.

He explained, “I was determined that acting was what I needed to do. I thought I should try it even if I succeeded or failed. After I graduated from school, I joined my agency. I’ve heard many times that my debut was late for my age. I debuted at 26 years old but that’s the age that other young adults are first employed. That’s also the age that I first started working.”

Jung Hae In also expressed his affection for his “While You Were Sleeping” co-stars Lee Jong Suk and Shin Jae Ha. He explained that they got even closer after taking a trip together. When asked about the photos they uploaded on Instagram, he smiled and commented, “There are a lot more photos. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

On their friendship, he stated, “We’ve decided to meet up again after the drama ends. Lee Jong Suk still has to go to the army and seems to be thinking a lot about it. I haven’t talked to him separately about my experiences in the army. We’re comfortable but we don’t ask each other about it. I think I’ve actually gotten a lot of help from him. Although Lee Jong Suk is a year younger than I am, there are many times when he feels more like an older brother. He’s reliable, mature, and has a lot of affection. On our trip, we all stayed in the same room but it was really comfortable. He’s a very mature guy but he also likes to act cute sometimes.”

The action thriller sageuk "Conspiracy: Age of Rebellion" features rising star Jung Hae-in, as well as Kim Ji-hoon, Jo Jae-yoon, and Lee Won-jong.

The film is set in the fourth year of King Yeongjo’s reign. This is the king at the center of Joseon’s most tragic father-son relationship, although the execution of his son, Prince Sado, won’t happen for another 35 years or so. King Yeongjo inherited the throne from his half-brother, King Gyeongjong, when factionalism in the court was pretty much at its peak, and as we know from the plethora of dramas and films that depict political conflict in Joseon, it can get pretty bloody.

Conspiracy focuses on one such incident of political strife, a rebellion led by real-life figure Lee In-jwa (Kim Ji-hoon), who allegedly planned the revolt to take revenge for King Gyeongjong’s murder. (Rumors that Yeongjo poisoned his older half-brother in order to ascend to the throne dogged the king for much of his reign.) In historical records, Lee In-jwa’s advance on the capital was cut short by the army, after which he fled, was captured, and executed. In Conspiracy, however, the film presents an alternate version of history, where the rebels make it all the way into the royal palace.

Thankfully for Yeongjo, he has Jung Hae-in, Joseon’s best swordsman, at his side to protect him. Jung Hae-in plays the role of a bodyguard to Yeongjo, and he will singlehandedly go up against Lee In-jwa and a cadre of assassins, with no help from a court infested with traitors. The trailer shows that Jung Hae-in is more than willing to rise to the challenge, vowing to kill every one of the rebels. Though I do hope he gets a little outside help during “the night history left unrecorded,” because just watching the snippets of him constantly fighting by himself is giving me secondhand fatigue on his behalf.

As expected from PD Kim Hong-sun, who helmed Black, Voice, and Liar Game, the film looks super stylish and dark, though the latter might be attributed to the fact that most of the film takes place during one eventful night.

Conspiracy: Age of Rebellion will be released on November 23 in South Korea.

I've loved him since The Three Musketeers/Bride of the Century, so I'm happy that his WYWS role is getting him noticed. After a year with so many actors going to the army, I'm thrilled he's already done with his military service!

Don't mind me, I'll just be sitting here staring at his dreamy face.

I don't like it enough to watch a movie about violence in the Joseon period, though. Hopefully Wise Prison Life turns out to be good.

Han Woo Tak, a police officer in love with the female protagonist (played by Suzy) WELL me and my friend were convinced he was doing his bi awakening during the drama and was actually in love with Jae Chan and Hong Joo at once lmao. Too bad that never came to fruition

Really really excited to see him in other projects!

I just saw his age the other day (29) and thought "What a pity! He has to go to the military soon!" Had no idea he served already! What a nice surprise!
