South Korea's popular K-pop group "Shinhwa" said Monday it wants to remain the country's longest-running "boy band" as it announced plans for a new album and concerts after four years away from the stage.

Clad in sharp black suits, the six members of the group expressed their excitement at a news conference in Seoul to mark their 14th anniversary and upcoming Asian tour.

"I feel really great and thankful about coming back to the stage," Eric, the group's leader, told reporters. He is also chief executive of the Shinhwa Company, an entertainment agency set up by the group. "We will become a group that stays in the center of the pop musical world for a long time in the future, not ending with our 14th anniversary," he said.

WASHINGTON (Yonhap) -- The Barack Obama administration should tie any food aid to North Korea with its handling of defectors fleeing their totalitarian and hunger-stricken homeland, a U.S. congressman said Monday.

"It's unclear whether or not the Obama Administration's food aid to North Korea - some 240,000 metric tons per year - contains any conditions or links to the refugees. It should," Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who chairs the Congressional Executive Commission on China, said at a hearing on China's forced repatriation of North Korean defectors.

He was referring to Washington's agreement to ship 240,000 tons of what it calls nutritional assistance to the North in exchange for freezing some nuclear activities.

A growing number of North Koreans are seeking to defect, mainly through China, which shares a porous border with their nation.
China, a key communist ally of the North, has a firm policy of repatriating them.

The North Korean defector issue has drawn keen international concern again following reports that around 30 North Koreans were caught by Chinese authorities and face severe punishment in the North.

"Forced repatriation by China of North Koreans isn't new. But that doesn't make what is about to happen to dozens of new victims any less offensive," Smith said.

"The international community - especially the United Nations, the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress - must insist that China at long last honor its treaty obligations, end its egregious practice of systematic refoulment, or be exposed as hypocrites," he said.

Hong Seok-cheon, 41, is an out-of-the-closet gay man who has spoken about what it’s like to be a pariah in a conservative society where 77% of South Koreans in one poll said they believed that “homosexuality should be rejected.” Hong says he is now finding a measure of acceptance

Reporting from Seoul— Hong Seok-cheon stands beaming before an adoring studio audience. It's a place he has always felt at home — basking in the celebrity spotlight.

For years, the veteran actor has been an instantly recognizable media personality here, famous as the onetime host of a children's show that was South Korea's version of "Sesame Street" and costar of a popular 1990s sitcom.

But on this Saturday afternoon, the slender 41-year-old with the signature shaved head is playing himself, an out-of-the-closet gay man talking about what it's like to be a pariah in a conservative society where 77% of Koreans in one poll said they believed "homosexuality should be rejected."

Highly recommended article on homosexuality in South Korea. )

Judging by the growing alignment of American big media forces around K-pop—within the last two months, The Wonder Girls starred in a Teen Nick TV-movie, Interscope signees Girls Generation performed on Letterman and Swizz Beatz signed a broad production deal with a South Korean television company—2012 seems predestined to be the year the ever-growing genre breaks into the Western mainstream. Big Bang have been twice name-checked by Swizz as potential Chris Brown collaborators, and on “Bad Boy,” the newest music video from their Alive mini-album, they make the most compelling case yet for why a rising K-pop profile in America is a well-deserved and wonderful thing.

The song opens with a very Slick Rick-sounding, A-yo, Choice, drop it on me, spoken by the group’s leader, G-Dragon, an androgynous man with a delicate, Skrillex-inspired hairpiece and a patched motorcycle jacket with a teal muppet-fur back. Despite spending 6 years being trained for stardom by his record label before debuting with Big Bang, G-Dragon was found out by Seoul police last October for having smoking marijuana. Either way, he’s totally seamless here. “Bad Boy” is exquisite, with roots in the airiest of hip-hop/R&B summer crossover. Though it’s sung 90 percent in subtly processed Korean, carefully placed English phrases explain the song succinctly—Sorry, I’m a bad boy… you’re a good girl—and provide crucial hooks for at-home singalong. “Bad Boy” floats the way your hand does riding currents outside the car window, in and out of the sun without seemingly any effort.

But perhaps most importantly—and definitely most surprisingly—the music video for “Bad Boy” was filmed in Williamsburg, down by the Marcy Ave JMZ subway entrance. Half the charm of K-pop is that it’s preciously and unabashedly manufactured, but there’s something seriously compelling and refreshingly unforced about weaving dances around Brooklyn subway steps. In our interview last week, Swizz Beatz said, “It feels like Korea is in your backyard, the way the internet makes things.” It’s already past that point. Big Bang really is in our backyard. They’re on the ground and they’re walking the turf, and for four breezy minutes they’re absolutely killing it.

Returning Shinhwa to rewrite ‘the legend of variety’

Confirmed appearances on ‘Radio Star’ and ‘Win Win’… Endless anecdotes from their comeback process and 14 years of activities

Shinhwa is set to make a dash for the variety frontline.

After officially announcing that they will be resuming group activities at their comeback press conference on 5 March, the 6 members of Shinhwa have been receiving requests from producers of various variety programs. Appearances on KBS 2TV’s ‘Win Win’ and MBC’s ‘Golden Fishery - Radio Star’ have been confirmed. A rep for Shinhwa said, “The requests keep streaming in. For a start, we have agreed to appear on two programs. After this we will add on to the schedule with more appearances.”

Shinhwa has risen as blue chips in a variety scene dominated by idols. With 14 years worth of anecdotes coupled with overflowing wit, the members are dubbed the treasure troves of variety. An industry insider said, “Coming back after 4 years, there is endless material to be drawn from their comeback process and army stories. They’re likely to become the hottest icons on variety shows for some time to come.”

As the longest-running idol group in Korea, Shinhwa celebrates their 14th anniversary this year and will be releasing their 10th album this month along with starting on an Asia concert tour. Eric said, “Looking at the juniors lately, so many of them are really good and even we are impressed. Rather than to show off new things just to surpass them, we will show our most ‘Shinhwa-like’ side to the fans who have grown up watching Shinhwa’s performances.”

10asia: Shinhwa’s 14th anniversary comeback press conference interview

“But it finally happened.” People say this all the time when something, which seemed fairly impossible, happened for real. Countless number of idols come and go every year but surviving in the show business is never easy. Shinhwa, who made their debut back in the last century, managed to continue their activities even after 14 years since their first appearance to the public on March 24, 1998. This year, on March 5, the group gathered for a press conference to promote their 14th anniversary concert scheduled on March 24. Shinhwa practiced the phrase trademarked by themselves, “We are Shinhwa, who Jun Jin (a member of the group’s name, also meaning ‘moves forward’ in Korean) like a Hye-sung (another member’s name meaning ‘comet.’)” However, like always, the six members got it wrong even after a long rehearsal but the light and playful atmosphere in the room proved that Shinhwa is still the same Shinhwa we knew back in the 90′s even when the members are way over their thirties.

How does it feel celebrating your 14th year anniversary of debut?

Eric: We first want to thank Lee Soo-man, the C.E.O of SM Entertainment, for seeing something in the six of us and putting us together under the name Shinhwa. We thank Park Kwon-young, the C.E.O of Good Entertainment, who helped us find our place after signing with the firm. We also thank our fans who believed in us, cried with us and laughed with us during the last 14 years, the rest of Shinhwa members as well as the staffs in Shinhwa Company who will be working with us for a long time. Our 14th anniversary is not the end but it is just the start. We hope to fulfill our singing activities for a long time at the center of this business and we want to become a model for other rookie idol groups. It takes time to build a masterpiece. That is why we want to show everyone that when something is old it doesn’t make it shabby, proving the sophistication and tradition in our group.

Shinhwa: (claps) We are Shinhwa!

There are so many great lines and moments that I wanted to bold everything. I totally awwwww-ed at Dongwan running to Minwoo for comfort after Eric was hard on him ♥ OTP for the win. And all the trolling on Junjin and Dongwan shows things haven't changed at all :P

I'm a bit worried about the "electronica" title track but they keep insisting it will keep Shinhwa's flavor so I'll trust they know what they're doing. It sounds like the rest of the album will be a nice balance though. I'm so excited!
