Yang Hyun-Suk, the CEO to one of Korea’s biggest entertainment companies, YG Entertainment gave time to be interviewed for his plans for his artists.
Giving a direct communication to the fans is a rare feat for the company president, but he says that this is an opportunity for him. “I do not get to know many of the people. And I want to personally say the things about my member artists so that the fans might know. I don’t want people to misunderstand my actions or my artists’ actions, especially the fans,” he says.
His love for music and culture is YG’s driving force. And this year, he caught the big fish as his two idol groups, Big Bang and rookie girl group, 2NE1 scored big in the music industry. The two groups, plus G-Dragon’s successful solo debut made Mr. Yang Hyun Suk very busy. So it is very fortunate that he is giving this interview.
Q: How is 2009 for YG?
YG: YGE’s musical success is very good and the company received much love. But I would not deny that there are also an unknown number of issues and controversies that made this year difficult too. But some have already passed, and I’ve come to see those challenges as part of our growth. Without those issues, we would not have learned as much as wedid. But 2NE1’s successful debut and G-Dragon’s successful solo debut gave satisfactory results.
Q: What event impressed you most this year?
YG: 2NE1’s successful debut. And G-Dragon and YG’s battle with plagiarism affected me quite a lot too. The thing with YGE is that we write our content rather than have someone outside the company do it for us. We like listening and performing the songs that we created on our own. It rakes up interest, but it’s scary too since a lot of people expect a lot of things from us.
Q: In addition to your fight against plagiarism, your rumored dispute with MBC is also a topic.
YG: Actually we don’t have any issues with MBC, neither do we want a dispute between us and them. I think that the media has just been giving it too much thought. Besides, it’s a known fact that YG artists do not get into shows all that much, and we don’t intend to change that principle any time soon.
Q: What goal have you achieved this year?
YG: 2NE1, definitely, succeeded beyond any of my expected goals for them. I thought that it would take two to three years before they would become successful, but they are already that. The members individually, are successful as well, considering that some of them trained less than my preferred three years.
Q: Is there anything that you regret this year?
YG: Big Bang’s album delay. For sure, they’ll get a new album next year. After G-Dragon’s solo debut, we will now vow to focus on Big Bang.
Q: Did you think that it was a risk debuting your girl group at that time?
YG: Yes, there was a certain risk involved. 2PM, Brown-Eyed Girls, 4 Minute, and a few more other groups debuted by then. 2NE1 winning Rookie of the Year did surprise me.
Q: Will YG release a new rookie next year?
YG: Currently, there are almost no trainees in YG. The last public auditions were made seven to eight years ago, and we haven’t opened one since then.
Q: What are your thoughts on the music industries awards and such?
YG: I don’t really think of awards charts that much since they are prone to error and other negative factors. Sometimes, they are influenced by a group’s existing power and the largeness of the company backing them up. I think that online chart positions are more accurate. You can have the music sales charts and not the aggregate results. But then again, I hope that fairness would still prevail in awards shows.
Q: What would be one thing that would summarize YG now?
YG: YGE has always been about hip-hop. We had JinuSean, Se7en, Gummy, Wheesung, 1TYM. And now we have a representative into the idol arena, like Big Bang and 2NE1. We are continuously changing and our development teams are always on the go.
Q: Big Bang and 2NE1 are gaining public attention. What do you think of that?
YG: There were many people back then who questioned my choice of members for the groups. Because I have a different standard from the rest of the industry, who opt for pretty and handsome members. I believe that appearance comes second to skill, because without skill, you would draw insufficient attention. Some people may see him as ugly, but I find Dae-Sung very attractive. I have a clear difference from stylized norms. I want to destroy the existing norms and standards through Big bang and 2NE1.
Q: What challenging field would you want to tackle next?
YG: I like the style of Lee Hyori, so I may want to venture to see a talented solo female artist. But maybe three of four years from now. In the meantime, I will focus more on 2NE1, Big Bang, Gummy, and Se7en before trying to debut another artist. There would be some big plans for next year, but I’ll keep it secret for now.
Q: What are your goals for the next year?
YG: I would like to try and focus on Se7en and Gummy. Se7en would be spending a lot of time with his new album, that would reveal a transformed part of himself. Se7en is going to concentrate on Japan and South Korea again for promotions.

Well, there's still Bae's solo and I hope this doesn't mean Top's and Dae's solos will get postponed indefinitely.

I'm used to the different style of promoting and it has been paying off a lot but still, Big Bang was so much fun on variety shows in the past and I'm sure 2NE1 would be a riot too so I can't help but feel a bit bummed.

Date: 2009-12-16 07:28 am (UTC)TOP said that YG told him not to be in a rush with his album. I think YG knows that TOP makes good music (eg. Good Man which I really love) and speed might affect the quality of them.
I'm sure 2NE1 would be a riot too
But even Dara, the supposed one with the variety show skills, was drowned in Family Outing D:

Date: 2009-12-16 02:17 am (UTC)I wonder though what's going to happen to YB's solo album with Big Show concerts in January, Big Bang's Japanese concert tour in February and YB's Japanese duet already scheduled for him. Maybe in March or April? (Honestly I think they should have released it in November like they were originally planning)
And I wonder what they are going to do with Se7en's and 2NE1's album releases as I doubt YG wants to release them too close to each other.
I also hope they get around releasing Dae's solo somewhere late spring/early summer and TOP's solo in next fall.
