Article: Criticisms rain on a girl group member "needs dieting immediately"... what are your thoughts?
Source: Joongang Ilbo via Nate

1. [+1,467, -249] Korea is too obsessed with looks... so what if an idol is chubby if she's talented?
2. [+1,175, -330] Considering that an idol is someone who is making money off of their looks, not managing your looks means you're not fit for the job
3. [+519, -115] I understand being chubby to a certain point but she's at a point where you'd be called fat even among non-idols
4. [+84, -8] Getting criticized for your weight is unavoidable. Star potential comes from your visuals but some people are able to overcome that with superior talent like Young Hyun or BMK. You never see anyone calling them pigs, do you?
5. [+76, -6] Her looks are only being judged because she's a celebrity. It's the same in any other culture.
6. [+61, -4] I think idols should look like idols. I thought it was gross when Shindong first debuted too ㅋㅋㅋ
7. [+55, -5] Like the best reply said, it shouldn't matter if she's talented but who expects talent from an idol? They're just kids who come out in huge groups and barely sing a few seconds per line and you're going to argue talent? That's why they're judged on their looks.
8. [+44, -7] If she doesn't want to be judged by the public, then don't be a celebrity.
9. [+41, -3] Based on the screenshots alone, she really does need to lose weight, idol or not.
10. [+39, -5] Can't help the beauty standards of our country. Especially idols, who make money off of their popularity. Their popularity drops the more they deviate from the beauty standards.
11. [+34, -2] Well she'll lose it if she cares at all about her career as a celebrity
12. [+29, -3] I remember Shindong got a lot of hate too for his looks and body but he made up for it with funny dances and stuff...
13. [+26, -6] Anyone who is saying she looks good is probably just as fat as her
14. [+25, -1] Seems like noise marketing... get some attention for it and we'll see her in 6 months with media titles like 'Pristin Kyla loses a ton of weight', 'Pristin Kyla's beauty goes up after weight loss!!', 'Pristin Kyla, was she always this beautiful?'
15. [+17, -1] Okay that's pretty bad... a girl group member not managing her weight means she's not doing her job or taking care of herself. The whole point of her job is to be seen by the eyes of the public. She needs to quit being an idol if she can't take care of herself.

A: Those screencaps have to be edited, they're in fucking potato quality. You're telling me this "journalist" couldn't find any fat pictures of her that weren't 144p quality?

B: Kyla is normal weight but when surrounded by her fellow members who are low-to underweight, of course, she's going to look much bigger in comparison. She is by no stretch of the imagination fat in any way.

C: Okay so if she's chubbier, Who gives a fuck. She's fifteen, still going through puberty and growing. Being underweight during puberty can mess up your growth, your period and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm glad she hasn't been sent the starve yourself to 40kg route by her company.

As someone who saw Kyla in person up close, she's not fat. The camera just adds more weight to her but she's not fat. Chubby maybe in comparison to the other members but no she's not fat. Pretty sure she will shed it anyway in the upcoming years. I believe her weight is proportional to her height since Kyla's tall.

her coordi's need to do better. obviously clothes are going to look different on her compared to extremely thin girls, which unfortunately means unflattering for her 99% of the time if they're sticking them in tennis skirts and knee highs.
does anyone know if stage clothes are generally "one-size" like how a lot of korean fast fashion is? i imagine they do tailoring, but how much?? are they sewing the clothes up from scratch?

anyways. every time i see her face she really REALLY reminds me of someone, but i can't put my finger on who and it drives me nuts. (it might be a cousin or some one not famous lol)

I believe they usually are one size and get tailored as needed. I find it weird how in those two photos it's outfits where everyone is wearing the same thing but typically Pristin wears different outfits with the same theme or whatever.

this comment right here is the source of the problem. no one sees ANY idols as actual people, they are eye candy for their viewing pleasure, no matter how young, and they have to keep up to these people who aren't even fans' standards at the expense of their teenage years and health. "she should quit being an idol if she can't take care of herself", are you kidding me? she is talented, more talented than a lot of people, suffers through being away from her family and friends at such a young age and deals with shit like this, & she should quit being a singer/idol because she's "fat". so should you quit your job just because you're ugly? like, do yall REALLY expect a 15-year-old girl to go to the gym every day??? starve herself to the point of an eating disorder??? so you can blame the company when she leaves or goes on hiatus??? like wtf, she can't be a healthy size? sungyeon was thick before she debuted and had to lose weight because of comments when she was on girlspirit and she was even younger then she was like 17!

so then when the said girl does starve herself, they take photos of her ribs sticking out and say "you should eat more!" like can young girls and women ever fuckin win? im literally tired of this conversation like wow it's disgusting and pledis should start taking legal action against this bullshit because it IS going to start affecting kyla , there's no way she can't see this on headlines all the time & her brother is trying his best but what can he do without ruining her image?

This is Pristin right? I tried looking for her in this vid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3myx-8xjVlM based on the screencap alone. Couldn't find her, why is that? Because those screen cap are GOD AWFUL and of course if she's next to someone who's underweight (aka the girl they're comparing her with), she's gonna look big in comparaison. Guess what? She's healthy!
Netizen need to take several seats.

She's literally a child! Even if she wasn't her weight is just fine. She doesn't stick out, to me, when she's with her group mates. Her weight is perfectly fine. I remember her brother saying something before when people were talking shit.

It's a mess.

The only reason she "stands out" is that Pledis has been dressing her less sexy/revealing than the other girls which is a good thing

ENOUGH with the comments about her weight already. She's a fifteen year old kid! I can't even imagine how damaging it would have been if dicks on the internet kept pointing out my weight and calling me fat when I was that age. The fake concern is ugly as hell too.

makes me checking their performance. and it seems this group have several bigger girls, which is good. and even then they're still probably smaller irl than what looks like on cam. also, netizen should shut up about the only thing that matters from idols are their looks bullshit bc first, it's bullshit, and 2nd, other than shindong there's a lot of other male idols who don't have the looks but they're not writing articles about it.

Yeah I'm glad they have other girls who are slightly bigger (than most idol girls) but still probably skinnier than me.

I feel so bad for Kyla having to deal with crap like this so young. I feel like every comment I see about her online is related to her weight :( I watch a lot of their live stages and while she is obviously bigger than the other girls (not a difficult feat) she doesn't look huge or unhealthy to me.

I visited Seoul in April and I am a US size 16 and while no one said anything to me about my weight when I visited I spent a LOT of time thinking "they definitely think you're fat and ugly" the entire time I was there. "It doesn't matter how fancy and perfectly you do your makeup you're still fat" was an actual thought that went through my head every morning.

I know people get judged for being overweight everywhere but man oh man did Korea make me feel even more hyper aware of my size. (of course having to see all the cute clothes I could never buy didn't help lol)

I feel the same when just visiting a Korean supermarket here in America. I am size 12 and I get a little insecure when I am there... maybe because I am exposed to so much of this kind of news about Korean body standards that I can't help but notice I am the thickest person in the whole store

The fact that idols are treated as objects instead of human beings is so saddening to me. Since she's a healthy weight, they're telling her that she needs to essentially starve herself to fit their narrow definition of beauty, but even if she was stick skinny, netizens would then be telling her to eat more. Either way, they're not going to leave her alone. The amount of scrutiny some of these kids is scary.

From: [identity profile] msgrottesca.livejournal.com

Nah fam, she's about my size going off these pics and we're both fucking fine lmao. Everyone is not born petite with a small frame, she'll never be skinny enough for these people because you can TELL she has a larger frame and bone structure by looking at her shoulders.

I got thrown in the hospital when I was her age for an eating disorder that no one wanted to diagnose because I wasn't skinny enough even though I was passing out from low blood sugar and blood pressure at school on a weekly basis. I sincerely hope she does not resort to the type of shit I did and that she has a good support system

this is so fucking despicable and it's wrong to scrutinize people's looks (regardless of their career or level of fame!) at ANY age but to do it to a child is a new fucking low
it could mess up her body image for life, she could develop an eating disorder, god she's just... still so young and my heart breaks for her
a girl who dreams of being a performer and gets that opportunity should be able to follow it, regardless of her weight

So when her company does force her into unhealthy methods of weight loss and she's thin during the next comeback, Neitzens are still going to complain. Let the girl live, she's on that stage doing it with the rest of her girls and not sitting behind a computer worrying about someone else's body. UGH THEY PISS ME OFF TO NO END.

but since this is idols world probably her agency is already making her feel bad & giving her tips to starve herself

Pledis needs to step up and tell these people that it's not okay to talk shit like this. lmao I know it sounds ridiculous because they're an idol company and you know.... but if they are letting her stay healthy like that it's because they must have some sense.

let a girl be 'not' stick thin! she's a literal kid and it's rly dangerous to put young girls who are developing and growing in fucked up diets. i'm sure she eats well and i am 100% SURE girl does her workouts. pristin's choreo looks so exhausting...

Sweetie, 15. Eat well and enjoy life. Working as an idol is surely tiring and emotionally stressful. I sincerely hope she has a great group of friends telling her that she looks ok.

This reminds me Seolhyun in Cheongdamdong 111. I remember their director scolding her for eating a piece of chicken. And another member coz the director saw some pictures of her online with a bit of belly fat. I looked it up & the transcript says ..."... Not anyone can be a girl group. From a regular person's point of view, you have to become a role model. If they think 'I could do that', what would they love you for and what would they like you for?"

Its brutal.

> " If they think 'I could do that', what would they love you for and what would they like you for?""

lol honestly, what kind of logic is that? it's not like all idols are admirable in the first place. and does that mean idols should not also be relatable at all?

man, i swear celebrities are really dehumanized. :(

Why are netizens at it AGAIN. She's a CHILD, just leave her alone!!! or start talking about how the entertainement keeps idols into really strict diets who could have really bad consequences on their health just because they're partly appealing to fans who consider them as dolls rather than human beings, maybe?
Anyway this is making me FURIOUS
She's not sticking out of the group, she already improved a lot when it comes to dancing and she's a great rapper, but of course those dumb netizens don't care about that, they just want to trash on somebody

Also Pledis needs to change whoever is tayloring her outfits. I feel really bad for her, she's super cute and her weight is just normal and healthy, yet the outfits she wears aren't flattering her at all. I'm sure the stylists could work around her body type since Pristin usually wear coordinated outfits with distinct details.
Also more structure in her hairstyles could help.

yes pls, pledis like needs a better stylist for these girls bc if they styled her better and reported obvs edited images and actively released statements or something i think she'd be better instead of leaving netizens to get bashed by her brother.

but seriously she's super talented and tbh she seems sweet, and she is so young so like can people give her a break.

Women just can't win. She's perfectly healthy. She is also 15. The only thing I'll give Pledis for during this situation is dressing her age appropriately. The thought that she most likely knows all of the shitty things that netizens say makes me sad. She's a very pretty girl who has definite talent but unless you're underweight or their weird ideas of "healthy" (via beyonce, hwasa) you're pretty much a pig. Let the girl live.

Also I'm gonna need these netizens to submit their selfies and BMI if they're going to be "concerned" over her appearance.

This is reminding me of a photo a newspaper from my country uploaded of a 10 year old girl that was obviously chubby and the amount of fat shaming comments in the comment section was horrible.
And then when some people tried to come at the people leaving the negative comments, their come back was "it's just a joke, chill"

like are you kidding me? It made me so sad cause 99% of the comments were of people making fun of the girl.

The only reason her arms look bigger in those photos is because her shirt is too small.
She's a child. Her body's still changing so in 5 years she's probably grown into any "extra" weight she supposedly has. Which she doesn't, because she looks fine. Netizens can go fuck themselves.
