Drama News Round Up
2017-09-08 01:12 pmSchool 2017 wrapped up on KBS this week, with 8 episode drama Lingerie Girls' Generation taking over the Monday/Tuesday slot starting next week.
It looks like Jo Hyun-jae (Yong-pal) will be playing the villain once again. He’s joined the cast of Park Hae-jin’s (Man to Man) upcoming multiple-identity action-thriller Four Men. The new SBS drama is about one man’s journey as he tries to find what drives human hopes, and finds mystery and romance along his way. The main female character is a violent crimes police investigator who lost her lover, and by fate meets someone with the same face.
Park Hae-jin has been confirmed to play the male leads (four of them, as the title suggests), and Nana (The Good Wife) will be the heroine. Kwak Shi-yang (Chicago Typewriter) has also joined the cast as an elite police officer who will be Nana’s sunbae, and Kyung Su-jin (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) will play a reporter who is Nana’s best friend.
The role Jo Hyun-jae has been offered is the elder brother of one of Park Hae-jin’s four identities. It was initially reported that Eom Ki-joon would play that role, but it went to Jo Hyun-jae in the end. The character is an overseas-educated chaebol heir with an ambitious drive and determination. He’s selfish to the core, possessing a strong desire to trample and win over his younger brother. When he learns Park Hae-jin’s secret, he uses it to secure his place in the company succession line.
It has been officially confirmed that NU’EST’s Ren will star in the upcoming drama Four Men. Ren will play the role of Yeo Hoon, the lovable younger brother of Nana’s role, Yeo Rin. As the youngest member of the family, Yeo Hoon is the “vitamin” of the family, who happens to have many secrets. Since they were young, Yeo Rin stood up for her younger brother, while Yeo Hoon always stood by his sister’s side even when she got into trouble.
Action thriller mystery romance drama Four Men is expected to air at the beginning of next year on SBS. The drama will be 100% pre-produced and start filming in November.
PD Ahn Pan-seok, who was awarded Best Director at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards for Secret Love Affair, is returning to dramaland after a three-year hiatus with a new project called Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food. It’s already been tentatively scheduled for JTBC’s spring lineup, but no other major details have been released.
He’s no stranger to JTBC, having done three of his last five dramas at the cable station including his critically acclaimed Secret Love Affair, so my expectations are pretty high for a high-quality production. Secret Love Affair was centered around two lovers with a large age gap of twenty years, a rarity for a female-male pair in dramaland at the time. So if the new drama is indeed going to be a noona romance, I trust this PD to pull it off with amazing chemistry.
Ahn Pan-seok’s next drama Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food is programmed to air during the first half of next year on JTBC.
Due to its popularity, SBS drama “Sister is Alive” has notified actors of a plan to extend the drama for six to 10 additional episodes and to adjust their schedules accordingly.
A source from the drama said, “Due to exhaustion and other issues of the writer and the actors, we are currently gathering opinions. Although we are hoping for an extension of eight to ten episodes, it is likely that most will probably agree to about six more episodes.”
“Sister is Alive” started airing in April and will wrap in late October if it is extended. Grabbing viewers with a storyline of women who have their own unfortunate stories and gather to seek revenge, the drama has reached viewer ratings of almost 20 percent. Writer Kim Soon Ok previously wrote other popular dramas such as “Jang Bo Ri Is Here” and “My Daughter, Geum Sa Wol.”
Previous casting post about this drama
Akdong Musician’s Lee Soo Hyun and JBJ’s Kwon Hyun Bin will be starring in SBS’s upcoming drama “Part-Time Idol”.
The storyline takes place at an entertainment agency. After creating a bunch of famous idols, a producer begins to question the whole process of making a star, so he goes on a break for a few years. Once he returns to the company, he gathers some trainees left on the back burner and tries to launch a co-ed idol group. The trainees undergo some peculiar training to debut in this group.
YGKPLUS and SBS’s mobile contents brand Mobidic will be co-producing the drama. Actresses Kim Hee Jung and Hwang Seung Eon will also be joining the cast.
Kim Hee Jung’s character is a trainee who’s highly skilled in rap and dance, but she develops a short-tempered personality after her debut plans repeatedly fall through. Hwang Seung Eon’s character, on the other hand, has a bright personality, but she considers giving up on her dreams due to stage fright.
Kwon Hyun Bin will be playing a cute yet overconfident trainee, and Lee Soo Hyun will be playing a character who had already debuted as a singer but is now trying to stand alone without her brother. Due to this stress, however, she begins to struggle with some vocal problems.
“Part-Time Idol” will be 10 episodes long, with each episode being approximately 15 minutes. It will first premiere online mid-November, but they are hoping to air it on television as well. Filming will begin at the end of September.
KBS’s Confession Spouses is a little over a month away from its premiere, and has recently added a slew of names to its supporting cast. It’s actually quite funny how parallel these new characters run in terms of their relationship with the main couple, played by Sohn Ho-joon (Blow Breeze) and Jang Nara (One More Happy Ending). We’ve got a trio of best friends for each spouse, as well as the requisite rivals in love.
Confession Spouses will follow the titular married couple, both 38, who are constantly bickering and generally very unhappy with how their lives turned out. They embark on a “clean up the past, change my life” project, which may or may not include time travel (some reports say they do, others omit the information). In either case, a good chunk of the series will be set in the couple’s college years, and the casting reflects that.

First, we have Heo Jung-min (Introverted Boss) and Lee Yi-kyung (Mirror of the Witch), who will make up two legs of the bromance trio with husband Sohn Ho-joon. They’re all students in the civil engineering department, and they sound like a hoot: Lee Yi-kyung has a bright and charming personality, but is called naive and a little dumb, lol. Heo Jung-min is described as a bit of a weakling in school and a comic character, although he successfully changes his style due to his love for Han Bo-reum’s character.
Han Bo-reum (Bring It On, Ghost, Modern Farmer), on the other hand, is one of two best friends of Jang Nara’s character, along with Jo Hye-jung (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju). Han Bo-reum, a former high school cheerleader, sounds like the kind of friend I’d love to have, with an easygoing personality and a high alcohol tolerance. Jo Hye-jung’s character is a bit of an oddball, but I can see her bringing the comedy: She has an innocent and goody two-shoes outer appearance, but will occasionally throw out a surprisingly sarcastic remark.

And then, we have the college-era rivals, who will vie for the leads’ hearts. Jang Ki-yong (The Liar and His Lover) will play a popular upperclassman in the same history department as Jang Nara. He unexpectedly and suddenly confesses to her in public, but gets turned down. Go Bo-kyul (Seven Day Queen), on the other hand, will be the recipient of Sohn Ho-joon’s one-sided love. A ballet major, her character will slowly open her heart to Sohn Ho-joon’s when he starts approaching her differently from before.
Im Ji-gyu (Man to Man, Doctors) will also be appearing in Confession Spouses as Sohn Ho-joon’s sunbae in med school. In the present, he is the director of a hospital and has a relationship with his underclassman built on their mutual dislike for one another.
Confession Spouses will follow KBS’s Strongest Deliveryman in their Friday-Saturday slot, starting on October 13.

Date: 2017-09-11 06:40 am (UTC)i hope this life is our first is as cute and relatable as it looks! i'm with you on cohabitation dramas, they are delightful. it's about time jsm had her own show, she's so long overdue for main roles again.
it's not easy. 😂 spoilers almost necessitate live watching dramas tbh. also i have v little willpower and don't really like being spoiled. atm i'm distracting myself w save me, which i feel like is gonna become an all time fave. i'm disturbed but totally engrossed in it. 😶

Date: 2017-09-11 05:47 pm (UTC)Cohabitation dramas and fake/contract relationships are two tropes that I wholeheartedly adore and will basically watch any drama with those storylines.
You're absolutely a stronger person than I am, good luck on remaining spoiler free. Save Me is so good, though I'm constantly behind.

Date: 2017-09-09 12:32 am (UTC)I'm still episodes behind on Save Me, it's so good. I can't say I'm enjoying it because it's too infuriating for that, but they're doing a great job with the storyline. I'm hoping to get caught up this weekend (which is exactly what I said last weekend).
Strongest Deliveryman finally got to the delivery app plotline that was talked about in the synopsis (why do shows do that?? It's over halfway done and just now getting to that??) and I'm glad, I feel like it finally knows where it's going and I've enjoyed the last few episodes more because of that. Last week I definitely felt a lot better about our main couple, that scene where he helps her clean and they're goofing around was cute. I was not expecting the delivery guy friend and her roommate, but I'm always here for an unexpected secondary romance! Speaking of, Ji Yoon and Jin Gyu are exactly the couple of my tropey dreams. I love when people hate each other and are forced to date and fall for each other, which is now starting. :) Go Kyung Pyo's hair is infinitely better now, bless the mid-drama haircut.
I didn't watch last week's Live Up to Your Name either, I can't get behind on dramas when my US shows are premiering soon!
I'm looking forward to a lot of dramas. Temperature of Love, This Life is Our First, 20th Century Boy and Girl (if the strike doesn't ruin it).

Date: 2017-09-09 09:53 am (UTC)I'm watching Circle now so lets see how that one goes -- it is written by one of my fave Korean writers so hopefully it will not disappoint me. Probably after I finished Circle, I will watch Live Up to Your Name since I hear many good review on the drama.
