JTBC's weekend drama "Woman of Dignity" breaks previous ratings record set by "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" and follows three tvN dramas in highest-rated Korean dramas in cable television (Reply 1988, Goblin, & Signal). Current 5th place is Reply 1994.
The final episode recorded a 12.065% ratings, a 2% increase from the previous episode which is an astronomical jump for a cable tv show.
Baek Mi Kyung, screenwriter of both previous record-holder “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon” and “Woman of Dignity” has shared her thoughts on her two extremely successful dramas.
Baek Mi Kyung explained, “I really didn’t expect [‘Woman of Dignity’ to do so well]. I thought the audience would be limited. Rather than lots of people watching it, I thought there would be a small number of hard-core fans, but I’m thankful that so many people are watching it. I didn’t think the drama’s storyline would gather a wide audience, and I tried to write a drama that people who sell or buy at the luxury goods section of the department store can easily watch.”
“It feels strange that one of my dramas has surpassed my other drama. Someone had to break the record set by ‘Strong Woman Do Bong Soon,’ and I’m glad that I was the one to do it. But I don’t want to have to do it again. As for setting JTBC’s highest ratings record, I’m very moved by it. It’s a delightful thing to set a record, but at the same time, I feel pressured about my next work.”
She then shared the message she wanted to tell through “Woman of Dignity.” “I wanted to say that dignity doesn’t come from money. Park Bok Ja (Kim Sun Ah) used to believe that money was everything and that once she had the money, she would become like Woo Ah Jin (Kim Hee Sun). But even when she gets the money, she’s still jealous of Woo Ah Jin. When she finally realizes what’s important in life, she dies. Happiness doesn’t result from money, and the only thing the upper class has is money. That’s why we don’t have to desire wealth. Dignity is living without violating the rules. The right way to live is to live an ordinary life while knowing my place and staying true to my values. The message of this drama is that we are all living quite satisfactory lives."

WoD has superior writing and superior cast comparing to SWDBS, and is so much better than mediocre Goblin, so you should all just watch it tbh

Date: 2017-08-22 01:18 am (UTC)I'm definitely going to check this out at some point, hopefully soon after I get caught up on currently airing things. I like the cast and I'm glad the writing was much better than SWDBS.
(Still will never get why Goblin got good ratings but that's a whole nother topic that I'm glad we agree on, OP)

Date: 2017-08-22 02:39 am (UTC)BUT, the acting is so on point and they really do show that having money isn't really what life is about and is certainly not something you should base your whole life on (although the 'climb up' the lead has to make isn't very steep at all).
And the fact that the whole plot is based around the women instead of the men (who are all (with one exception) crappy and inferior anyway) makes me so happy as a viewer. I wouldn't say it's the adult AoY, but they do have that in common.
(I strongly dislike Goblin, it had such a potential as far as the general idea goes but the script didn't deliver at all).

Date: 2017-08-22 08:34 am (UTC)I've heard Japan does slice-of-life really well and that's a genre I love. I remember watching Sunao Ni Narenakute a long time ago because of Jaejoong but I really enjoyed that. Oh I also liked Last Friends! That's a while ago haha.

Date: 2017-08-22 01:59 pm (UTC)Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu is an amazing romcom. It has all the elements what makes me love Jdramas in general. It is hilarious and realistic despite being a bit weird (plot). So far the best Gakky's role to date. The drama was so popular last year.
I saw you list and you need to watch Cruel City like asap. The drama is amazing in every corner. One of Kdramas' best crime drama imo. I dont even like crime genre but I totally head over heels with the drama. Jung Kyungho is so amazing as Paksa.

Hit the feelings type of Jdramas? Have you watch Summer Snow? I think every episode will hit you right in the heart esp the ending.

Date: 2017-08-22 02:22 pm (UTC)If you like mystery, the top of my list would be Maou & Ryusei no Kizuna. Both dramas are very well written from the beginning towards the end. Maou is very well acted and full of symbolisms, suspense with really awesome soundtrack. The Kdrama version bore me but the Japanese adaption is really well written and directed.
While Ryusei has humor in it, it is actually a mystery drama as the siblings are trying to find the murderer who killed their parents. The siblings' chemistry with each other is really awesome. And Nino & Erika continue to call each other 'Oni-chan' and 'Shi' based on their drama's character even after the drama ended.
Lets see how you enjoy this 2 dramas and maybe I can recommend more later. Reverse (that I'm watching right now) is very interesting as well. Its fun guessing what the hell happened since everything is ambiguous.

Date: 2017-08-22 07:23 pm (UTC)On top of my list for romance drama would be Summer Snow. I really thought its one of the best romance Jdramas out there as everything about the drama is just awesome and heartfelt. Jdramas female main leads usually are not damsel in distress so I tends to enjoy J-actresses more than K-actresses tbh. I wouldn't say the guy is hot haha since his character is not supposed to be hot lol but it is a really well done drama about family and love and sacrifices. The same main couple acted together again years later in another hit drama; Moto Kare and I would put the drama in romance genre too. Or Platonic! Yes, I would definitely put this as a romance drama for grow up. It has a lot of thought provoking dialogs but again there are no hot guys lol. Its hard to find hot guys in Jdramas imo (lol!) at least for my standard :P but the actors there has a lot of charisma that you tend to find them attractive despite them not being attractive? Am I making sense here?
Or you can watch Yamapi's romance dramas if you wish to watch drama with a good looking guy. Somehow Operation Proposal fits your description very well. Some finds the drama frustrating but it has a lot of awesome factors that made it special if you ask me. Like everytime he goes back to change the past, he discover something that he never realized before. The script in general is well written with many great life lessons and the ending has deep meanings that some people might not get it due to the simple ending.
For romance, I would also definitely rec Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu despite the main guy is a nerd haha. But the drama is sweet and hilarious and it is definitely my fave Jdrama from last year.
Sorry, I dont usually watch romance Jdramas so my recs are pretty much limted (lol).

Date: 2017-08-24 02:25 pm (UTC)1. Tatta Hitotsu no Koi. I dont care what anyone say but I love this drama. I love the main girl as she is like super bold -- very straight that will leave you speechless lol. Youth love story with a dose of reality with a nice ending. I love it when they hug -- like real hug not hugging because they were acting. :D
2. Innocent Love. The main girl is not exactly intelligent but she is nice, shy, hardworking but has this strong determination in her -- you can she is strong despite all these soft features. The main guy is so sweet -- basically EVERYONE, I mean everyone in the damn drama is in love with him haha. Utada Hikaru's Eternally as the theme song is so perfect for the drama.
3. Boku Unmei no Hito Desu. This drama just ended a few months ago. Hilarious and entertaining and contain lots of really cool destiny stuffs without being overly cheesy. You got a determine guy, a strong and independent girl and a really hot, good looking and hilarious GOD (yes, a God). The chemistry between the 2 main guys are the highlight in the drama -- its their reunion after 12 years so it bring lots of nostalgia for the fans.
Hope you like one of the dramas that I recommended. ^^ The tone is definitely different and simpler from Kdramas but somehow I tend to remember them more.
