Pic behind the cut.

Pann: Wendy's really severe weight loss;;

1. [+256, -4] Wendy's body type seems to be one where she's thin on top but heavier on the bottom. I'm that type too so I know her pain. You have to lose a lot more weight than normal to lose weight in the legs and then you end up with a skinnier upper half like this ㅠㅠ

2. [+136, -0] Hul... she's going to pass out...

3. [+111, -3] Wendy's so pretty whether she loses weight or not ㅠㅜ all of Red Velvet is ㅠㅜ I just want them to be healthy

4. [+100, -0] Objectively speaking, she looks way prettier with the weight loss;;;;; she obviously worked hard to lose all this weight, if all of you complain about how she looked prettier before, then what does that make all the blood, sweat, and tears that Wendy went through to achieve this? ㅋㅋ You all made fun of her when she was heavier I bet

5. [+72, -1] When she was chubby, all of you dominated Pann telling her to lose weight and making fun of her, and now that she came back after losing weight, you're saying you feel bad ㅠ it's really annoying as an RV fan to watch this process repeat itself. Once she gains more weight, you're going to go back to saying she's bad at managing herself; what do you want her to do?

6. [+65, -0] I think it's for the better that Wendy lost weight. When she was heavier, she got less attention than the other members but she's definitely looking her best these days and standing out more too. I think this is a result of her efforts and I find her current state way better.

7. [+59, -1] As a fan, I just want her to be healthy but others keep ragging on her for managing her weight. Fine, she listened and lost the weight, and now everyone's like "she's too thin"... speechless

8. [+50, -0] I'm just hoping that she doesn't suffer from any eating disorders. I want her to stop losing more weight and start taking care of her health.

9. [+35, -0] People hate whether she's gained or lost weight. Wendy is heavier in the legs so she has to be drastic with the weight loss to see results in the legs.

10. [+26, -0] Wendy still had abs even when she was a bit heavier... I think she went drastic with the weight loss this time to lose weight in the legs. There's nothing you can do about body type ㅠㅠ

TRIGGER WARNING

i'm like ???? @ some of these comments. apparently you can't critize someone even if he or she is too thin because "they worked hard for it!!!111!!"

"Once she gains more weight, you're going to go back to saying she's bad at managing herself; what do you want her to do?" exactly!!! now you are concerned when netizens were the ones that critized her for being too thick in the first place?! well this is what you get for pressing down those idiotic norms on woman (and men).

seeing that show campion stage is rlly painful, every elaborate move her bones are sticking out, so sad she went so far to get those results ;-; i love her so much for her personality, stage presence and voice, it makes me so sad she does this but i can imagine doing the same if you would read comments online and the HUGH amount of criticize on visuals instead of preformances/singing/dancing that happens (aren't idols supposed to be rolemodels...how is being unhealthy and looking/being underweight a good rolemodel??)

We keep having these discussion but nothing actually changes for the better for these idols. I'm holding a fundraiser to get this girl mental counceling and a proper nutriotionist, who's with me?

Realistic? Yes. Effective? I doubt it. Tbh that's the problem, as fans we are always talking about it but are any of us really at power to do anything about it? idk idk

why would you want to criticize someone who was pressured into losing weight?

anyway, as someone who recovered from an ed, this discussion about wendy is making me very uncomfortable bc a lot of it feels like fake concern, especially from non rv fans

as someone who also recovered from an ed, I think the conversation is necessary. faux concern or not, pretending this is okay isnt right

where did i say people have to pretend it is okay? the thing is, knetz used to tell her she looked bad before so she lost weight and now people are trying to tell her she looks bad too? like thats gonna accomplish anything other than making her feel worst about herself.

the conversation needs to be about kpop's ridiculous body standards as a whole, not about a single person.

so since i'm not a rv fan i can't feel concerned about her well-being??? because that's how you worded it which is some bs

im talking about fake concern. if it doesnt apply to you, why would my comment bother you?

because YOU said it "feels" like fake concern. how would you know if their concern was fake or not?

That picture honestly hurts my heart. I just felt sad when watching her perform.
None of these girls deserve to go through this constant pressuring to be thin.

I'm worried about her health. I've seen pics of her in the past, I don't believe this look is natural for her. I'm sure she worked hard to achieve this emaciated look, but working hard to destroy your own body and health (although I'm sure she doesn't see it that way) is nothing to applaud.

Speaking as a former anorectic dancer, I am very concerned for her and I think I can probably imagine a bit about the cycle of suffering, self denial, self hatred, and self punishment that is going into this battle she appears to be waging on herself.

I hope SM staff will intervene and get her help. I saw this happen with Yuri and I think SM was able to step in and help her.

She's so athletic looking and attractive, it's warped that ppl were calling her fat.

She was so emaciated during Hoot promotions that I was srsly concerned for her.

Yuri's weight loss was straight up terrifying, but I'm not sure it's SM that stepped in to help.

Date: 2017-07-14 12:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] callherblondie.livejournal.com
I thought they might have bc her weight loss back then was so extreme and drastic that I wonder if SM figured it could actually cost them money/hurt their bottom line if they let her continue like that.

Who do you think stepped in to help her? Maybe the other members? Imho, some of them seem like they might have disordered eating/orthorexia too.

Well, Sunny was also having health issues during the Japan tour and Yuri was still a stick when they shot the mv for "Bad Girl"...
The fan reactions (internationally) were really extreme and this was when SM was in negotiations to launch SoShi in the US so it's possible it was a company thing. I think it's more likely that SM decided they couldn't risk their most profitable group being taken out of commission post-JYJ so they got medical help as an investment but not really in good faith? I just really don't think SM put the brakes on it out of genuine concern.

Oh no, I meant in my original comment that I think SM stepped in and helped Yuri bc they didn't want it to hurt the group or their bottom line, I don't think they did it out of genuine concern. I hope they step in for Wendy, I don't care if it's out of genuine concern or not (I'm sure it wouldn't be) as long as she can get healthier.

I think she's going to pass out anytime soon. Can you imagine the hunger she has to go through to get this result? :O

She didnt stand out last time not because she's not as thin as the other girls. She didnt stand out because she always got to worst styling each and everytime in their comebacks. :/

#4... i'm sure they were one of the ones who made fun of her when she was "heavier" -.- the girl wasn't even kinda heavy imo. wtf is up with this unhealthy, unrealistic body image these people have? toxic ass environment.

With an idol's schedule how does she even have time to work out that many hours a day? Unless she's not sleeping at all. Also, they're surrounded by managers constantly and it's appalling that the managers would allow that.

I mean this is the problem... drastically dropping below her normal weight shouldn't get her attention and getting attention isn't more important than her health.

I thought I was getting used to seeing super thin girls because of kpop, but I am honestly shocked by the above pictures of Wendy's ribs, it makes me feel ill.

i feel like the arguments are missing the point. Some of it might be 'fake' concern I dunno, but the real issue here is her company is letting her/making her lose so much weight that she looks like she starving. The companies are saying 'this is okay' these companies are profiting off the starvation of women, and as the audience who watch on we are complicit in legitimising it.

but though, me here talking about how shocking it looks, I don't know how it helps any situation, or how to stop this situation.

I also want to add, those comments defending the need for weight loss because she had fat legs or whatever are disgusting, this idealisation of the thin legs as being 'normal' and everything else being 'heavy' ugh.

If these pics get more exposure in Korea I think SM will just issue some horseshit statement in which they'll say that she's sorry for causing fans to worry and that despite everything she's totally healthy and she'll work hard and then stylists just won't give her crop tops anymore.
I sincerely hope she gets help.
These netizens are disgusting.

I usually never comment in these kinds of posts but I noticed her weight loss immediately from her teaser pics and coupled with past articles I've read regarding her comments on dieting/her weight I don't feel like she's in a positive place mentally. it's really sad to me and I wish SM as a company had a better policy about managing idols' health -- they and YG feel like the worst offenders in this aspect. it concerns me to see idols with no muscle tone, almost skin and bones, it's hyper-unrealistic and normalizing things like that and ~tiny waists etc is just going to get worse over time and drive more female idols to this point that Wendy's at.

This makes me so sad. I love Wendy so so much, she has an incredible voice and presence and is so beautiful to me, no matter her weight. As someone with a long history of eating disorders and mental illness, I can only imagine what she must be going through emotionally. Wish there was some way I could express my support of her :(.

what is the limit to this "thinner is better" attitude. how thin will celebs have to get before netizens (and society in general) learn that being healthy is attractive

From: [identity profile] jyusou.livejournal.com
there is such immense pressure to be skinny in asia. i experience it myself. i'm 170cm (5' 7") at 60kg and my mom continually tells me i should at least get down to 55-57kg. it's honestly with my job pressure and hormone issues just thinking about this makes me mentally exhausted. pan to some of my heavier coworkers and it gets even more acute with the nicknames and constant monitoring. at least the one good thing that came out of that is a joint effort to lose weight healthily and group gym meet-ups.

but i digress. back to the topic, society in this day and age has already made up it's mind that it prefers skinny over healthy, whether that mindset is warped or not, clearly the critical thinking to distinguish that isn't there. some of the netizens in this thread are simply unaware of their cognitive dissonance.

Did anyone else notice how unhappy all of them look this comeback? There's the brief moments of smiles during their live performances, but they all just look like they're going through the motions on stage. There's no really joy or effort in performing. You see them smile when the camera is on them and then they go right back to being stone-faced and emotionless.

It's such a drastic change from Happiness or Ice Cream promotions. :/

I just went back and watched a live of Dumb Dumb to compare, and holy crap I'm almost about to cry. Wendy has always been my fave, and just seeing the difference and remembering the thing with Taeyeon where she mentioned that her manager would get angry if she ate ice cream..... This whole thing breaks my heart.

I noticed that she was looking ridiculously thin this comeback but I didn't realize that you could literally see her ribs poking out like that T_T My heart hurts for her because I'm sure she felt pressured to lose weight because of these same netizens calling her heavy and fat even though she was at a perfectly normal size. Even Joy has lost a bit of weight. When will these people let go of this "the skinnier the better" mentality? This is not healthy at all.
