Apparently it was born out of a typo or something. The first sylabol of his name Guanlin in hangul 관 (Guan) looks very similar to 판 (Pan), so some people mistakenly wrote 판린 (Panlin) instead of 관린 (Guanlin). It just ended up catching on, like an in-joke. Now it's his new nickname.
