The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) said Wednesday it will begin an investigation into a bullying incident at Soongeui Elementary School which took place in April. Education authorities will look into suspicions that the prestigious private school omitted the names of students involved in the bullying based on their family background.
"Because it is difficult to determine whether the school intentionally attempted to downplay or cover up the incident based only on the claims of the victim and the files provided by the school, an additional investigation is necessary," an official said.
Earlier this week, officials found the school did not adequately deal with the incident, belatedly reporting the case to authorities. The school also did not provide protective measures for the victim, despite him being absent from school since April 27.
The bullying occurred at a school camp at Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, on April 20. Four third-grade students allegedly beat a peer with a plastic baseball bat who was covered in a blanket and made him drink body wash.
The homeroom teacher was aware the bullying took place that day.
The victim's parents filed a complaint to the school bullying report center, April 24. However, the school only reported it to the SOME, May 12.
The first report said there were three assailants, but the victim's parents claimed May 30 there were four, and a committee meeting June 1 deferred on measures to be taken against the students.
The committee held a second meeting June 12 and determined that the incident could not be considered a case of bullying, and decided not to take any measures against the students.
Local broadcaster SBS reported on June 16 that the victim was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a skeletal-muscular breakdown, as well as post traumatic stress disorder. However, the report said the bullies were let off due to their family backgrounds. One student is the son of actress Yoon Son-ha, and another the grandson of Park Sam-ku, chairman of Kumho Asiana Group.

why on earth would the school wait 2 WHOLE WEEKS to report to the SMOE? not only that, but the homeroom teacher knew about the assault, but not said anything. ugh, it disgusts me how people born with money can do to others. and that poor victim .. dealing with a body breakdown & PTSD at the age of 10 is traumatizing, & heartbreaking, it truly is.

Date: 2017-06-22 07:53 am (UTC)I really thought these kinds of things only happened in dramas, but teachers and school administrations seriously don't do a thing nor lift a finger about bullying because of who the parents are. A child has to be physically and mentally scarred for something to be done. It's disgusting.

Date: 2017-06-22 07:54 am (UTC)I also hope that SMOE will do a better job than the school. How can something causing a skeletal-muscular breakdown and PTSD can be dismissed as "not bullying" ?????????????????????????? and what could have happened to this kid before this :(
And then you have successful dramas showing this kind of bullying done by really rich kids but they can't be bad because they're falling for the victim right??111??

Date: 2017-06-22 08:55 am (UTC)I understand why parents want to protect their children, but damnit, covering incidents like these and claiming they are anything but innocent little angels capable of this sort of violence is astounding to say the least. No one wants to learn about their kid being a bully, and a decidedly violent and cruel one, but how will denying it will help him/her in the long run? They're not even teenagers, so what will happen when they are a full blown adults?
This will keep happening unless the proper measures are taken.
Fuck that school tbh, if they tried to cover for this, who know what else they've tried to hide as well? I'm glad some other authorities are taking it seriously though, and hope those little brutes recieve proper punishment, and that the kid gets the help he needs to recover.
