can any indian users weigh in on this subject? i've read conflicting opinions on whether it can be considered cultural appropriation or not, so i wanna hear what people with actual indian heritage have to say. (or there're other cultures that use bindis too? sorry for my ignorance then)

Bindis are used in several cultures outside India, in places like Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh for example.

I'm Pakistani and over here the Bindi is something almost exclusively worn by the Hindu community particularly the red Bindi between the eyebrows as it's associated with married Hindu women. There's a lot of complicated religious dynamics in play with how it's worn here but generally, non-Hindus will never wear that style and the placement will be much different if they use the gemstone stick-on ones. So yes even within the native culture there is an understanding that the symbol is associated with one group.

And for personal experience, I remember being in grade school in Pakistan and finding a half broken lipstick that my friends and I sued to give each other red bindis as a joke.A hindu classmate of ours was not happy with us and we ended up wiping it off and apologising.

Guys, please, cut them some slack.They couldn't have just used any other imagery to represent Buddha in the video.I mean, it's not like he/his depictions have any kind of iconic, easily recognisable poses or anything.

Even if they were going for Urnas and not bindis it's still questionable considering most buddhists I know consider it a sacred symbol associated with divinity and don't wear it themselves.

Shouldn't they know better by then... They had problems with their videos for what, a whole year now? I'm really surprised that nobody in the company said "hey maybe we should play safe for this comeback?"
Also bindis aren't associated with Buddha? there are certainely a lot of things they could have done to express their pun better.
