"Still, it was not without its controversy. A south-Korean girl group called 2NE1 claimed Richie’s title track “Just Go” was a bit too similar to their earlier release “I Don’t Care.” Though Richie hasn’t discussed the claim, Universal Music Group is investigating."

He has a career that spans four decades, has sold more than 100 million albums and has won more than a dozen American Music Awards, but Lionel Richie isn’t done yet. His latest album, “Just Go,” was released last spring and now Richie is on the road making a stop Saturday at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods.

Richie has released 13 solo albums since leaving the Commodores in 1982, including two compilation CDs. Though his biggest successes were in the ’80s, in recent years, Richie has done well on the album charts. His 2006 release, “Coming Home,” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his biggest debut since 1986’s “Dancing On the Ceiling.”

That album happened to come out at a time when his daughter, Nicole, was at the height of her popularity. Not surprisingly, she happened to star in the music video for the lead single, “I Call It Love.” And Nicole was asked to appear on several talk shows around the time of the album’s release. But whatever the reason for the success of “Coming Home,” it prompted Richie to get right back to work and in 2007 he started recording “Just Go.”

Richie’s latest album features collaborations with Akon as well as songs written and produced by Ne-Yo and The Dream. The album was described by cduniverse.com as “pop/R&B perfection” and album buyers must have thought the same. The CD got off to a great start on the charts internationally, breaking the Top 10 of the U.S. R&B Album chart and peaking at No. 1 on the UK R&B chart.

Still, it was not without its controversy. A south-Korean girl group called 2NE1 claimed Richie’s title track “Just Go” was a bit too similar to their earlier release “I Don’t Care.” Though Richie hasn’t discussed the claim, Universal Music Group is investigating.

In the meantime, Richie’s tour is heating up. After spending the spring on a European tour, Richie is finally stateside and will be making a stop at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Saturday night. As for Richie’s future, he said details on a long-promised Commodores reunion could be released by the end of the year.

A south-Korean girl group called 2NE1 claimed Richie’s title track "Just Go" was a bit too similar to their earlier release "I Don’t Care."

Did 2NE1 claim this? I thought they were being accused of plagiarising it, not the other way around. Or did I miss something.

This is confusing and I'm assuming it's the other way around.

Actual plagiarism or not in the YGE songs, I'd like for these cases to go to court and be dealt with or that final statements were made. What annoyed me the most during all that hoopla is that everyone was mostly speaking out of their asses from both sides while none of the involved took legal actions. I know these things aren't as quick and simple as I'd like them to be but it's ideal to have a legitimate decision, otherwise the smoke just lingers.

I think the article writer got it all wrong as 'Just Go' was released before 'I don't Care' and thus nobody is blaming Richie for copying, but it's the other way round.

*sigh* Just another stupid accusation of song stealing. Fuck, everyone's song is gonna be accused of being stolem, 2NE1 song title is appropriate here.

This article is wrong. "Just Go" was released Spring of 2009, BEFORE "I don't care."
Moreover Richie is under Universal Music Group. I don't think a tiny label like YG can go against UMG.

comparatively YG might not be as HUGE as UMG... but I seriously doubt they should be considered small lol

UMG owns 25.5% of the WORLD's music industry (Sony owns even more).
Not hating YG but, YG is a grain of salt.

Adding to that, doesn't BB release their Japanese albums under UMG Japan? Correct me if I'm wrong though.

So if that's the case, YG already has some sort of relationship with UMG...

failed article is a fail

and failed first comment is a fail XD sorry 'bout that

this is a case where i actually don't think there's a case here; a few similar beats is not enough to make a valid plagiarism claim, especially considering they are both pop/r&b-styled songs and there's literally a style to that type of song where EVERYTHING SOUNDS THE SAME to a certain point. this is nowhere near "heartbreaker" level but i guess after finding that one, universal wanted to pursue anything else that could possibly be seen as a copy

also no one has listened to that lionel richie song in like 20 years

also what the hell is wrong with lionel richie's face in that picture goddamn.

Well, this is probably wrong. I doubt Lionel fucking Richie would plagiarise anyone's music. Srsly?

So true. While reading it I was just like, 'Ok, I get it, he's successful, his new album's come out, can we get to the actual plagiarism business already?' And even the part about the supposed plagiarism only takes up a tiny part of the article.
