Leeteuk's question to Moon Jae In (presidential candidate):

"I've heard that businessmen and public service workers use APEC cards and special passports. Would it be possible if you could also provide a similar system for culture providers..."

"In fact, businessmen do get special passports and visas for their global business promotions. Among the APEC countries, they issue things like corporate passports for long-term visas and stays. Many systems like this exist. However, the hallyu celebrities don't get access to such services although their roles are just as important. I'm not so sure about the special passport but I think it's definitely needed."

Pann: What Leeteuk said to Moon Jae In today on the 4th

1. [+377, -9] Also Taeyeon had said something about how idol training is harder than national exams and university preparation ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I know it's hard to be an idol but it made me speechless how she said that when she hadn't studied properly. What Leeteuk said is even worse. Foreigners will think Korean idols are at the level of 5th-rank public service workers or something.

2. [+240, -5] Ugh, that's not something he should wish.

3. [+217, -5] Isn't that too much?

4. [+106, -1] I'm sorry but the quality of his work is different. How can he wish to be at the same level as the 5th rank who's responsible for major national affairs?

5. [+98, -0] Honestly speaking, he seems to think he's really something.

6. [+91, -1] Wow... That's so unlikeable.

7. [+90, -0] Isn't this also lookism? Someone has to study hard to become a public service worker but but someone can become a 5th rank public service worker with their handsome face.

8. [+84, -0] He's proving that he's uneducated and ignorant ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

9. [+78, -0] I really dislike him because he's the type that says things without thinking because he's immature and irresponsible. He also has a lot of controversies but a lot of them got buried because of his fans' shield.

10. [+71, -0] I know celebs work hard in their field but it's so gross how they have this superior mindset like him. Leeteuk happened to show it because he's stupid but a lot of celebrities must also think the same way. Once they become popular, they forget about their rookie days and become arrogant.

11. [+71, -0] All of the candidates are talking about giving up their privileges but Leeteuk is trying to make them for himself.

12. [+58, -2] He's nothing but an entertainer ㅋㅋ

I don't like the guy and he probably should have phrased it better but given how much flying some idols especially those who are promoting heavily abroad do, special passes do make sense - its not entirely nonsensical

he has terrible foot in mouth disease

True. They are flying for business, just like businessmen/businesswomen. It could work for long term stays in places like Japan.
But honestly, I'm going to hold on judging because I don't know exactly what perks he wants with visas. The article is too vague.

I fail to understand how he is wrong? Idols travel a lot so it seems to make sense to me? First thing that popped into my head was the Oh My Girl ~scandal that had to do with visas. And hasn't there been other concerts that have been canceled surrounding these issues?

Maybe this is translated wrong, but I didn't take it as him saying idols deserve the same treatment as important businessmen and public service workers.. just that he is aware that a system is in place to help them with travel, and that a system should also be in place for idols as they... also travel a lot a well. And is he wrong that idols do in fact bring a shit load of traffic and money to Korea?

i was thinking the same ....before ryeowook joined the army sm cancelled some super shows only due to his visa problems

any group and agency could use some special visa to make kpop tour a little easier

I mean why not. he's just referring to long term visa. idols fly a lot to promote hallyu, including your faves. lol ppl are just blindly hating

in this one he's right, Hallyu helped promote South Korea globally amongst other factors, so if the Korean businessmen has this because of their contribution to the country's economy , so I think they should have it too, also he's not asking this for himself alone, he's asking for all the people in the industry..

remember when Kai's visa had some issues for the first US tour and had to skip a show till his visa got fixed?

I get what he's saying, and I don't think he meant it in the way others think he did.

Someone please get help.

I think the issue is the mention of civil servants. becoming a civil servant means taking about a billion exams and you got to have damn near perfect educational record (and work experience, maybe?), and it's thought to be a really good, stable and well respected job in Korea (off topic, but I think quite a few east Asian countries regard civil servants highly).

so people probably took that as him thinking idols should be on the same level as civil servants, and in a country where education is number one, a dude who didn't even go to university shouldn't even dare to think himself as good as a civil servant.

(personally I think a entertainment visa would make sense, but eeteuk, my dude, get your fckn priorities in fckn order, Korea has more shit to worry about than idols overseas activities)

i first read it as "i wish my company and others in the entertainment business were able to plan ahead, and get our paperwork done in time"
but i don't know the numbers he pulls in.

i don't know what to think, really.

he can also try and pull a shinhwa/highlight/etc, be his own boss, and then try be a big enough entertainment business player to get a special passport.

i always wondered how many passports and visas idol go through, especially really popular idols like exo that are flying multiple times a week or like every other day between countries. i'm sure some type of special visa would help

Its actually a good idea since a lot of kpop groups travel a lot and giving them some sort of special visa will also help avoid those visa issues that causes concert cancellation (which breaks fans hearts).

But Leeteuk being Leeteuk, the message is good but delivered poorly.

Well it is true that idols constantly travel overseas, visa problems abound, and they are truly at the forefront of promoting Korea and its culture. They're much better than any government initiative tbh (I Seoul U ........ trying to make bibimbap a thing ....). I do agree it should have been worded better, but I haven't read it in the actual korean so I'm going to reserve judgement there.

Also, I don't like the undercurrent in many of those comments. 'Entertainers' are looked down upon still, and are sometimes considered the modern equivalent of a gisaeng (or a Japanese geisha), and wrongly and disgustingly suggested to only be worth a small amount for their bodies (see how idols especially pre-debut are taken by their CEOs to 'entertain' business men and government officials). Actors fare better than singers, and singers better than young idols.

genuine question, kpop kfans is considered as a good source?

Leeteuk said so many questionable things, but this one kinda makes sense. I mean, he's talking in his capacity as an idol?
