I want to start a k-beauty regimen, but dont know where to start. D: What products do you add first? What order? Been leaning towards trying Cosrx for a cleanser (maybe double cleanse), and wanting to try a snail serum and the jeju masks.
I have combination skin, with adult acne on my cheeks, blackheads, and some light scarring on my cheeks I'd love to minimize. I have worse skin now, than I did when I was in HS, and I'm tired of it.
i suggest checking out asian skincare thread on reddit! they have a guide for beginners, tons of recommendations and explanations, etc etc. the most basic routine would probably go like this: oil/balm cleanser, foam/cream cleanser, toner/lotion, eye moisturizer, face moisturizer, sunscreen. when you get to know your skin a bit better, you'd be able to add more steps that target your specific needs - like essence, serums/ampoules, emulsion, sleeping pack, etc. online stores to check out: sokoglam, glow recipe, peach&lily.
echoing the comment above, the asianbeauty reddit! i would suggest checking out the sidebars first, very helpful for beginners. oh, also looking less at people's haul posts because otherwise it will be super overwhelming, i used to do that and it made me buy things that didn't suit my skin type and need D:
Could you share what effects you've had with BHA exfoliants? People say they're great for oily skinned people like me and that they'll help reduce acne / blackheads / whiteheads, but I've tried Paula's Choice BHA and Bravura Salicylic Acid (a UK brand) and didn't really notice much improvement from both.
I'm not sure if it's the waiting time (I've tried not waiting before continuing my skincare and also waiting for 15 mins up to 1 hr), using them too often or not often enough (I tried 2-3 times a week and then every day), or something else. I know they do exfoliate because I experienced some peeling on my skin and hands when I apply using my hands, but I'd still get breakouts and clogged pores. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I'm like T.T
Thanks so much! I'll look into those videos. Yeah, I'm still figuring out what causes my breakouts, it could be products, hormones, bad food habits or just everything, lmao. I've been better at moisturizing for the past few years especially with gel creams that are pretty light for my oily skin. I'll look into AHAs, and I'm interested in trying Trilogy's Rosehip Oil. Actually I also use The Saem Tea Tree Cleansing Water, it's pretty nice. Thanks for wishing me luck, it means a lot <3
in no particular order: - therapeutic acne sulfur masque by peter thomas roth - water drench hyaluronic cloud cream by peter thomas roth - gentle toner by avene - extremely gentle cleanser lotion by avene - acne pimple master patch by cosrx
me too! their thermal water is amazing, i spritz it on my face ~500 times a day lol i use the cleanser lotion more like an aftermath, to soften my skin (no rinsing). for actual cleansing i use their micellar water and then gentle foam cleanser. i'm also thinking of ordering their milk cleanser from dermstore (they have 20% discount now) to see if it'd be better for makeup removal
Hmmm, I wonder if I should try their milk cleanser or the cleanser lotion? I can't do any foaming cleansers b/c they dry out my skin like crazy and leave me with patchiness.
the most i did w/ cleanser lotion was massaging it into my face, wiping it off w/ a cotton pad, then spritzing my face w/ thermal water, and wiping it off again. so i don't know how good of a cleanser it is when you actually cleanse your face w/ tap water and everything, the usual way. i also like their cleansing oil (which isn't actually oil, it's more of a gel), but it foams up too, so idk if it suits your skin. i just ordered milk cleanser, so i can let you know how it works out for me :)
same, along with being ultra-sensitive. i love sharashara's all-in-one bombs, so i would recommend any one of them (they have honey, aqua, and berry), but they're very very find to hard in the us right now. they're available on sharashara's official website, but their website is only in korean.
i am a huge fan of benton's aloe propolis gel. it's very soothing and moisturizing, but doesn't make your skin greasy. i have the oily combo skin, and it makes me dewy while calming my redness. my wife has extremely dry skin, and it also makes her face soft and hydrated. 10/10 imo.
Thank you! I found the Neogen wine gauze on amazon as well for quite a bit cheaper than on sokoglam. Do you think it's safe to buy k-beauty products from amazon?
Thanks! I actually found the Neogen wine gauze pads on amazon as well for $17.99 and sokoglam's price is $27. Do you think it's safe to buy k-beauty products from amazon?

What's your fave acne fighting product?? I find anything by Kate Somerville to be waaay harsh on my skin. Like I think a product I used fucked up my under eyes.
i have sensitive/acne-prone/oily + combo skin (with mild rosacea HAHAHAH THANKS DAD). there is nothing on the US market that works as well for me as benton products. i use the aloe toner / bee essence / aloe propolis gel, in that order. it keeps my skin on LOCK.
benton is controversial after their 2014 preservative scandal (preservatives were not added to a batch of product), so for that reason i do check my bottles, but they did a full sweep of revamping their preservatives while keeping their products gentle. my skin is SO clear and has been in the year i've started using their line, while also never having any irritation issues on my gentle pale baby skin.
that's horrifying and definitely in line with what i heard D: i began using that line post-scandal and read so many blog posts about what happened so i could make an informed decision. there's definitely this ethical issue where what happened is complete shit and there is absolutely no excuse for it. for me, it is the. only. brand. that consistently works. i've had the best skin of my life since i began using their line, period. i try to be wise and inspect every single bottle i get from them. idk man. even though i use their products, i also think they need to be under constant scrutiny.
Sorry if this is dumb question, but what specifically do you check for on the bottles? I want to try Benton's products but I'm nervous because I've had friends who had bad reactions and also I heard about the scandal so I was like ummm maybe not.
it's not dumb at all! so, what happened is that, because preservatives were not added to a batch of essence product, mold balls formed in the bottle. when girls starting notice their skin was breaking out, they looked into their bottles and found them.
all of the benton products i get come in pump bottles except one, which you can easily see through. i open the top to inspect the product on the pump, and use a flashlight to inspect the bottles. there should only be the clear product and bubbles. since they revamped their preservative system, their essence has a slight yellow tinge to it, but it's still very clear and easy to see through.
Oh, thanks for the detailed explanation! I've been wanting to try Benton's products for a long time now, but I was worried because of the scandal and what happened to a few friends of mine. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a few of their products now that I know what to check for, thank you!
DRINKING WATER. seriously, it changed my skin. my spot treatment favs: therapeutic acne sulfur masque by peter thomas roth, acne pimple master patch by cosrx, acne spot treatment by murad, purity spot treatment by 100% pure, drying lotion by mario badescu
can you get a fresh aloe leaf? they sell them at the swankier supermarkets in my area. if you can get one, cut off pieces and rub the fresh gel and flesh to your skin a few times a day. it feels SO GOOD and is great for moderate skin reactions. also: WITCH HAZEL. fresh aloe and witch hazel have saved my baby skin many times.
i had horrible hives with skinfood's egg white pore mask about a year and a half ago. it was complete shit.
thanks for advice! i have some witch hazel with me right now, will try it :) still can't believe i reacted to an "organic" toner that so many people love *sigh*
Bees are organic, but people die from their stings. Foxglove is usually organic, but can fuck up your heart enough to kill you -or can save you. Nature is not kind and organic doesn't mean safe!
In other words, it probably is organic, but your skin hates it. Mine hates tea tree. Also peppermint. Also, anything citrus or "energising." I definitely learned each of these lessons the hard way -some of them several times before they took! So many people swear by tea tree -I didn't want to believe that it was the cause of so many hives for me, but I eventually did learn that nature is out to kill me.
i also badly react to tea tree oil, hugs! i was just thinking along the lines of alcohol or acids. if i react to something it's usually because of those, so i was surprised to not find any irritant i might recognize
many people seem to love it, so maybe you'll be luckier than me! it doesn't contain any irritating ingredients as far as i know, so no idea why i reacted so badly. it does however have this weird smell... idk how to explain, as if someone took plants w/ the strongest smell and put them into something chemical. anyway, a lotion with a similar consistency that didn't break me out and that is also loved by everyone is hada labo's gokujyun hyaluronic lotion, so you could try this one instead :)
i really enjoy purchasing decants from reddit's asianbeautyexchange sub. it's so much fun and a cheap way of trying products i haven't before!! i just got in a big box with a bunch of all-in-ones, along with some toners, ampoules, eye creams, a few facemasks i like.
i LOVE sharashara's berry bomb, but i'm having the worst fucking time finding a place to buy it from. it's totally disappeared from any us-friendly retailer. if anyone knows where i could buy it, holler.
For anyone looking for something to help heal acne scars/hyperpigmentation AND speed up the process of breakouts healing, Mizon's Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule is a staple for my nightly routine and it's done wonders for my skin. Some people MIGHT be sensitive/allergic to the snail mucin secretion, but it's worth a try if you don't have super sensitive skin <3
It's amazing how Snail seems to work out for that, I use Missha's Snail Sleeping Mask and it does so good in such a short time, gotta try Mizon's too some time!
definitely interested, i've been working on a spot of post-inflam. hyperpigmentation on my chin for a few months. i'm having good results with derma e's scar gel, but i'd also like to try another product. as far as mizon, their snail repair gel (pink bottle) isn't mind-blowing but it's a nice item to have around for healing, although their black snail all in one blotched my skin when i patch tested 8(
