CLC's main rapper, Yeeun, was spotted wearing a jacket with the confederate flag on the sleeve in a behind-the-scenes video posted on Cube's official YouTube channel. It can be spotted at around 6:15 in the video below. Although she wears the jacket in this video, she isn't seen wearing it during the Music Core performance that same day. Seeing as idols don't usually pick out what they wear for live stages, Cube seems to be blame-able in this situation. Thoughts?

As a black American myself...this shit is exhausting to constantly see. I saw about four confederate flags today as I travelled back home from Georgia.

Edited to provide clearer details of the situation!

I saw the rising sun flag at an anime convention I went to not too long ago. People just really don't bother understanding certain symbols. But I feel you my friend is friends with someone who has the confederate flag in their house and who wears clothes with that flag on it. Even though she doesn't do it, I can't help but feel triggered when I see it on my facebook page her in her friends house with that flag as the background or her taking picture with her friend who is wearing something with that flag. Like I am thinking of deleting her as friend at this point cuz why is she associating with someone like that and still wants to be friends with me. People don't care about anything that doesn't affect them.

As an infinite stan I was upset when I saw Dongwoo had it on in Infinite H "pretty" MV. Sadly this stuff is going to keep happening even though Koreans flip out when someone wears the rising sun flag yet can't bother to avoid doing something similar to other ethnicities.

Right...its weird cuz people always wanna tell black people to stop living in past but can't give up a racist flag because of their ancestors or whatever.

It's how it is everywhere. One thing can be offensive to someone but they won't bother as to how other things might offend other people.

I'm so sorry about your friend tho. Maybe if you talked to them about it?

We aren't that close so I'm not that heart broken over dumping her. I'm just sick of seeing that symbol on my facebook wall.

ia with the rising sun flag, in every single convention there's allways a flag, and sometimes more than one.

Damn. Cube is just messing up at every turn.

My country doesn't teach American History, so I really only learned about the confederate flag recently and through my own research. So I'm not really surprised that a lot of people wouldn't know what it signifies.

eek eek eek. like it's probably not her fault bc as others point out, not everyone learns american history and wouldn't necessarily understand the symbolism of the flag. tbh i didn't know what the rising sun flag was til well after i was OUT of college. so. still surely someone at cube would have known or checked it knowing yeeun would be the one to get called out.

if even americans don't know the implications/history behind the confederate flag, should non-americans be expected to know it? this isn't bts having a photoshoot at a holocaust memorial & wearing swastika.

i thought many choose to stay ignorant on this topic. like they see it as a symbol of southern pride or something, so they don't really connect the dots.

Thats the excuse. We all know there isnt a single person who flies that flag that doesnt have the n word as part of their vocab when angered by a Black person.

Nah, they know it's racist. But then again, the way they try to gloss over slavery and tell us to get over it, you can't expect much critical thinking from those sort of people.

nope. i got into a fight w vlogger abt it and the reason for wearing it was bc alladat racism is part of american history/southern pride and they were honored to keep the traditions alive

i was like mate wat...

I understand where you're coming from.

I didn't understand the controversy with Tzuyu and the Taiwanese flag until I researched it.

Whereas I think the vast majority of people in the US who praise the confederate flag are either straight up racist or willfully ignorant, I don't think it can be held against different cultures for not knowing the US history behind it. I mean how much about Japanese imperialism is taught in US public schools? How much does the average American know that the rising sun flag is offensive? In terms of the general public, I'd say not many.

Now.... using blackface and all the crazy shit said about hip hop culture (looking @ u taeyang and g dragon among 8 billion other idols) is a different story... that's not merely wearing a symbol/flag the meaning of you may not know, that's literally judging people on skin color, and that's wrong everywhere in the world.

Date: 2017-02-12 11:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mmmalvina.livejournal.com
completely agree with you! there's no need to drag people for something that's not common knowledge. flags/symbols associated with specific events in just one country are arguably known only among a limited circle of people. judging others based on their skin color, on the other hand, is universally known as racist, so there's no excuse for this kind of ignorance.

It's a trend in Korea to follow Kanye's style for some reason. Their stylists probably made a cheap knockoff though. He wore the confederate flag to make it represent slavery instead of southern pride, I read.

As a former Kanye stan *deep sigh*, from what I remember of the controversy from him using it... he explained that it represented slavery full-stop, so he wanted to take it and make it his (reappropriation?).

It made some white supremacists mad at the time because he was 'stealing' something of theirs.

yeah, I saw YDG wearing a shirt with the confederate flag on it on this last season of Unpretty Rapstar.
It was obscured by his jacket for the most part but it did have "Mississippi" written on it, and I was like "where would he even buy that in Korea?"

Before I got into k-pop I'd never experienced such a constant state of 'disappointed but not surprised', and tbh, I still don't for the US/UK celebs I follow (or at least not to the same extent?).

Cube really messed up with this one because no matter what some deluded and ignorant idiots tell you about Southern Pride... that flag is a symbol of hatred and oppression.

At this point, I realized I shouldn't expect kpop idols or stylists to know or understand about the confederate flag. It's American history, not Korean history or Asian history. Similarly, most Americans don't know or care about the rising sun flag's meaning. Unfortunately.

idk i saw screencaps of her jacket on OH and I had no reaction (being in kpop so long has de-sensitized me. didn't zico have the same controls very not too long ago?) but yeah if i saw the flag in my area, i'd be very very uncomfortable...

i only know about confederate flag and rising sun flag (and i'm from country occupied by japan. it's just not thought/sensitive issue in our country) from omona, so...

i'm sorry that this is still happening :( who's the designer?

like some other people have mentioned, i've also only learned about the meaning of the confederate flag by reading more progressive (?) american media, and unfortunately i don't think a lot of people in k-entertainment are interested in educating themselves on these kind of issues.

Kanye West

The jacket is from his tour apparel a few years ago
Image

Around 6:30, you can see the back of the jacket and it seems like it's Kanye's or at least a good knockoff

I don't expect the girls to know better (I didnt until last year iirc) and they are not even responsible for their outfits, but considering they are on life support by their international, mostly american fans, the stylist should be in really big trouble.

stylists need to know that their job is not just pick the pretty (really questionable) clothes. they need to know that symbols have a meaning (esp flags) and at least google them before putting on their celebrities. come on, it's not that hard....

.......
...

anecdote time: eastern euro girls, we're 6.
my friend brought some troll doll to school that had the confederate flag on it.
proceeds to tell me that it's the norwegian flag.
the good know-it-all i already was at that age, i told her that it wasn't the norwegian flag.
"but my dad told me, so"
"that doesn't make it the norwegian flag"
we went home, discussed the issue with our parents.
next day she says it's the danish or icelandic flag.
i say it's not a flag of a country, it's some old flag from the usa.

we didn't actually learn about it at all in school, i'm just interested in history, so i think i read up on it a decade later.....

stylists need to research clothes. why put clothes on idols that you're not sure what it means? even if it's english words or symbols like these, they need to research.

Especially flags. If you're designing with a flag you really need to know the history first.

Does she even know what it is? My ex-BF had a roommate from Vietnam who'd just moved to the US for college and he wore a Confederate flag t-shirt once because the dickweed at the store told him it was a Union Jack. He was really embarrassed when my ex explained things to him. That was a mean thing to do.

this isnt yeeun's fault at all. im not even gonna blame the designer even tho they need to 100% research what clothes they're putting on their property

the only person i'm mad it is the ugly designer that thought this was a ~cool thing to do
