This picture was taken after the recording for Music Bank ended
source: kbs staff ig

The person these idols were waiting for was the PD of Music Bank. They were supposed to go to the PD's waiting room and greet them by bowing 90 degrees and shouting their groups' signature chant. That was the reason all these idols stood in lines and waited for around 30 minutes..

-What about the veteran singers..? Do they also have to wait for 30 minutes?
-I heard singers like Baek Jiyoung usually just leave without greeting the PDs..

-I can understand.. Since they have to look good in front of the PDs..

-Looking by how there were Twice and Seventeen in the pictures, I think the picture was taken recently.. But why, though..? I mean, it's not like those PDs are some kings or whatsoever.. Standing in lines for around 30minutes means that idols get more chance to see each other, I don't really like the idea of that!!

-I hope this culture will disappear as the time passes by..ㅋㅋㅋ

-PD.. This is why I dream of being a PD..

-I don't care whether if that's an obvious thing to do or not, but it doesn't look good from the Third Person Point of View.. PDs serve the idols stage for them to perform, and the idols perform on the show to raise the viewership ratings.. Don't you think that's a win-win condition..?

-That's fascinating..

-That's just like how models line up to thank the designer after a fashion show ends..

-They stand like that for around 30 minutes..?? That must be really tiring..

-I can see Pentagon and Seventeen..ㅜㅜ

-I can see my babies..

-Greeting the PDs is a good thing to do.. But I don't think it's a really nice thing to do to make them stand in lines and wait for 30 minutes..

-I seriously can't understand this..

-Ah.. It's my first time hearing about this culture..

-Whoa!! Those are the back of my babies' heads!!

-Dahyun looked so bright in that picture.. She's cute!

-Am I the only one who can't accept this whole culture..? I just can't understand it..

-I don't understand why they have to do this..

-Do they do this everyday..?

lbr they're probably worried about them dating each other, idols must remain pure and attainable

oh yeah i know, but its just, like even then its not like they're gonna agree to date after 30 mins of interaction (which, ok, even if they are then whats the problem??? entitled fans smh) so they might just become friends instead?? but ofc entitled fans first think of "no!!! my idol is MINE!!!"

mte, like in what world would you even think about dating (even if you wanted to) someone you had to stand next to (or maybe not even next to, just in the same room as) for 30 minutes when the scenario is that you have to be 'on' because you're greeting some higher up aka very obviously WORK? Sure maybe friendships and dating later but from this specific situation wtf lol.

Seriously??? My eyes have never rolled so far.

This doesn't surprise me but I feel sorry for them, the amount of time idols spend at music shows would be exhausting and this is completely unnecessarily adding to that.

I hope this makes people realize how much power PDs have. I feel like every once in a while when there is a new show it starts a discussion about how an entertainment company didn't put their idols on a show when probably they can't even get it (I know there is times they just don't want to but I'm not talking about those).

Nothing we didn't already know but they didn't mention this is AFTER waiting for every group to practice, perform, record, show end, etc... so, 30 minutes plus some hours.

i wonder if whoever posted this is new to idol world, kissing PD ring is like you said part of this culture, its like another way of paying the noviciate

sbs staff could share the amount of "cash tributes" every agencie gives to their network, we know that is even more important than any 90 degrees bow

Thanks for posting this, I hadn't seen it before.

It's become tradition for the managers of singers who either won that week or had a comeback to treat the program's staff out to dinner at the group's own expense.

If they were well taken care of then I wouldnt have such a problem with this. But they are all probably on almost no sleep, dehydrated, had little to no food all day and are running on fumes. It's not right. Treat them better. These are people many of them very young.

It's so disheartening how evil people can be given the opportunity. Basically they're saying "I dream of exerting my power over people" like woah #goals (rme)

Korea seems to have a really unhealthy relationship with job/accomplishments, like you shouldn't dream to have a job that you love but one that allows you to be successful (and with that I mean getting money). It happens everywhere but I have seen so many times k-netizens complaining about it that it's seems it's a thousand times worst there.

lol I studied that, but totally for different reasons so I agree. I don't know how to translate it at english but one part of my career was to learn how to direct a show (so basically being the PD).

Date: 2017-01-09 04:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dynamite-state.livejournal.com
I don't know Korea's relationship with accomplishments specifically, I'll be honest, but it sounds like the rest of the (capitalist) world. But I take your word that's more intense there.

The actual job that comes with the title of the PD is as serious, demanding, and respectful as any. But saying "THIS is why I dream of becoming a PD" under a picture of idols being, well, mistreated by the power of higher-ups, implies that their dream is to abuse said power over people/potential celebrities (which is worldwide the entertainment industry's #1 problem by far; take the sponsors case in korean entertainment for instance). It's not a reach to make imo.

they already spend such an absurd amount of time at music shows. like i really will never get over the absolute time waste music shows are. there's your whole goddamn day! its pretty much like an award show nearly everyday and you gotta stay for the whole thing most of the time.

it still baffles me how idols, THE moneymakers of the industry (without idols no money for the companies) still get treated like kids. can you imagine something like this in the US or the UK? companies, managers, PDs etc. have so much power, even if you're a household name in korea you still get treated like a child.

I think the problem with kpop is that there are no checks and balances. For Western recording artists their management, their booking agents, their publicists, recording company, etc. are from different companies and they can check and balance each other and the one thing they have in common is the artist they're all working for.

In kpop it's like the other way around -- the management company does everything in-house from artist management, recording albums, publicity, press, booking and arranging tours, providing stylists and housing, absolutely everything as well as trained the idols from when they were pretty young so the idols become wholly dependent on them. Kpop management companies do this specifically to exert as much control over their product -- the idols -- as possible.

From: [identity profile] goshipgurl.livejournal.com
true. thats something that always bothered me in kpop - one single company does everything and has so much control over their artists.

Yeah well seeing that these idol groups managers have to suck up to PDs to even get them on the show to begin with this seems about right.
Those that bow the deepest and kiss ass the most are the most popular.
It's their managers that should be doing this so their idols can drive home at a safe speed and get some food and rest.

There was mention of a little bit of this on "The Producer". I really wonder if the more senior or established ones still do this.

So basically, greetings is really big in kpop. It doesnt stop with junior groups greeting the seniors. It extends to show PDs too.

There are so many better things they could do for 30 minutes, like sleeping or going to the next schedule they obviously all have... and they have to wait in a corridor?? what kind of sick power play this is.

From: [identity profile] ariellm13.livejournal.com
To be fair, this is the way it was was when idols first came out but back then there were only a few and schedules weren't as packed. So it used to be the few groups and solo artists that were promoting at that time would say thanks and be on their way. So it was probably just a small 3~5 minute wait.

Now, there are a whole bunch more groups. It's to the point where PD's have to cut some of the idols who want to be promoted. And still, about half of the groups that make the cut can only partially sing their song. So the best way to avoid that is for groups to be popular, come from a company with power, and/or be well liked by the PD's. That's why back when Girls day wasn't popular and they were from a small company, they still promoted a lot on broadcasts and got to do full versions. PD's liked Mina so they kept their spot on programs even when they were charting.

I also heard that Girls Day's initial success and opportunities came from Yura's father paying bribes to PDs and such.
