Momo, Amber, Kangnam, and Ten to appear in new variety show about foreign idols

TWICE’s Momo, f(x)’s Amber, Kangnam, and NCT’s Ten are set to appear in Kang Ho Dong’s Lunar New Year special variety show, “Even If You Don’t Know, Try Again” (working title).

A representative of SBS has confirmed that the four idols will be participating in the program, adding that filming for the pilot was completed on January 7. They also stated, “The current title ‘Even If You Don’t Know, Try Again’ is a working title and will be changed before the show airs.”

The show will have Kang Ho Dong as its MC and is set to air during the Lunar New Year holiday. The pilot will follow idol group members of foreign nationalities as they study Korean to take the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) exam.

...? I feel like they've been in Korea long enough where their Korean should be better than elementary school level. Why don't they just have other idols come on the show and teach them. Like foreign idols that have been their long enough to know Korean well and understand their perspective. They can even have them be the same nationality. Like maybe bambam or nichkhun could teach ten. Takuya can teach Momo. Etc. I feel like that would be more interesting.

...or just show what it's hardest during learning Korean depending on nationality, what helps them most, but of course if initial concept still stands, they are going for cheap laughs and mocking this idols language effort, because some of them are live in Korea really long time so what exactly they can learn from children language wise.

Well the reason I said that is if they are looking to make the show interesting have special guest that knows exactly what they are going through trying to learn the language would be more acceptable to me than having kids teach them.

yeah, i think it would be better if they were learning from real teachers since they're gonna be taking an academic proficiency test. like, i'd buy that there's a lot they don't know and that most of their knowledge of the language is casual conversation & profession-specific (we saw this with amber when she went on real men and didn't understand a lot of what was being said cuz she doesn't know army terminology) and maybe they're better at speaking than reading or writing it, but like they're probs not gonna learn the grammar stuff they need to know from elementary school kids.

Oh wow for some reason I missed that part of the article. I think it would be nice if they interact with other idols just for practicing conversation but yeah they will need a real teacher if they are taking an exam...I really hope the show doesn't mock their Korean. I still remember amber crying on some reality show (can't remember now) cuz she wasn't understanding what was going on. I always get a little annoyed when I watch certain seventeen videos and the members laugh at Joshua when he reads Korean.

i hope the show doesn't make fun of their korean, but i don't have high hopes. i've watched plenty of shows with amber and kangnam and people haven't always brought up they're not native speakers, but with the subject of this show i don't see how they'll avoid it.
so i think half of it will be really patronizing, like WOW UR KOREAN IS SO GOOD WOW and the other half will be laughing at pronunciation. as a foreigner living in korea and trying to learn korean, ive found that most people are really positive about you trying to learn it but are unintentionally really discouraging. like, my students make fun of my pronunciation if i say something but they're kids and they're not used to hearing foreigners speak korean (which i think is one of the roots of the issue for most people tbh) but adults should know better and i don't need to be told im cute or adorable OR treated like im speaking some crazy non-language when i try and order a smoothie, cuz i know my pronunciation isn't THAT bad.

i have a lot of feelings abt this lmao and im def gonna watch this show, just to see the trainwreck and feel some solidarity with the ppl on it

Yeah I never been to Korea. But I went to college with a lot of Korean exchange students and I've taken classes myself so I understand what you mean. One of my friends I know she doesn't mean it but she gets annoyed with me when I don't pronounce a word or name right. I get why it must sound annoying to her especially other peoples names but certain characters are really hard for me pronounce and I'm not trying to be ignorant. Like wonwoo name for example I find hard to pronounce... anything with this -워 type of thing is hard or like words with double consonants. I find I'm way better at writing and reading than speaking. But it's probably opposite for these idols. I also had a kid ask me if I was mixed Korean when he heard me speak and im like no...

Yeah I'm defiantly going to watch it too mostly for Ten lol. I've never been a big fan of amber or kangnam.

yeah the double consonant vs single consonant is really hard for me to hear the difference & pronounce. even some of the consonants that are in the middle of 2 english consonants (ㄷ and d&t for example) are hard for me because i tend to pronounce them too much to one side. the difference between ㅊ and ㅉ is lost on me most days when im trying to say 진짜, etc etc. one of my theories is that koreans aren't used to hearing broken, korean-in-progress korean, if that makes sense. they're pretty much just used to hearing native speakers, so they can have a hard time understanding the stages in between and pronunciation that isn't quite there.
at least that's how i try to explain why my korean teachers and students who are used to interacting with foreigners and how we say things can understand me just fine while cashiers and other people have a hard time understanding me saying really basic stuff.

Totally interjecting here, but I feel like, sadly, their pronunciation will be made fun of.

I can't speak for the guys, but Momo and Amber have already been make into jokes for their Korean. Amber with not knowing the meaning of things on Real Men, and Momo for her lines on "Cheer Up" (apparently she pronounces a "Z" sound on a word that doesn't need it and I've seen people like Heechul and B.A.P's Himchan do an ~impression of her for it).

I think this show could be a fun, cross-cultural learning experience with idols, or an excuse to mock people for trying which the working title leads me to believe, but I'll hope for the former.

It's okay lol. But yeah I do remember amber crying in real men because of it. Himchan? Out of everyone he should know how it feels to be made fun of for pronounciation. Like during BAP's world tour fans made fun of the way he said "the roof is on fire" and sort of pronounce the "r" as an "l" which is very common for Koreans. From what I remember a lot fans called out other fans for doing that and said that himchan looked upset. I know a popular youtuber who is a vip made a sign that said "the loof is on fire" and she got dragged on tumblr for it.

Anyways I would love for the show to actually be helpful to foriegn members of the group like you said a cross cultural experience but ...:/ not counting on it.

He is not terrible person per se, but terrible MC in entertainment sense. He is not making good host, because imho he loves to be centre of attention too much and has very aggressive demeanour, is rather dense when it come to recognizing the general atmosphere, helping less experienced guests on the show. He has to "reflect" in the past because of tax issue and last two years marking his comeback.

Somewhat interesting note, I noticed while in American we tend to say something like Korean-American, I occasionally heard Koreans say American-Korean. It's like we each emphasize the "otherness" of people.
