As I said in the livestream post, I was pretty disappointed by the lineup tbh. A lot of (older) groups I would enjoy watching perform were not present, especially YG groups. YG groups suck live, but damn, do they know how to make it entertaining to watch. Coupled with that how most groups often are so busy they only have time to put out a half-assed remix or medley thing, it's usually not even a good glorified perf of what they usually put out on music shows. So yeah, the interest just wasn't there for me.

I guess this was based on tv views or smth? I think more international fans tune in for MAMA and they stream it online but I doubt there's an official figure for that.

And I for one am glad there were no YG groups because their fandoms are annoying and I don't need another year of Big Bang running around yelling tbh! And I enjoyed the stages of groups that I do like, like the gf x svt collab (it was really cute and I want more) and ofc bangtan.

Are people surprised? As it is, Korea doesn't do much out of the box for these ceremonies. The red carpet is a tragedy. You have to sit through lack luster performances of groups that aren't even on the map, whose songs didn't even chart. They barely even bring in the people with the hit songs or who have great public recognition. The show has no sort of flow. The performances aren't really striking or surprising. They don't give out the awards to people who really deserve them and pander to as many fandoms as possible. They also ignore performers who have great public recognition but lack fandom.

Honestly, MAMA now really about neck and neck with weekly music show's special episodes. Except music shows have a cleaner execution.

My interest in Kpop/the performing artists is at a 1.5% so I can understand. I was only looking forward to Fanxy Child. MAMA has had a few grander collab stages in the past but it doesn't seem like they had many special or noteworthy stages this year.

but why are YG stans acting it's because no YG acts were there? MAMA's ratings have been steadily declining. last year was a 1.5% decline from the previous year. it's not a surprise.

personally i thought it wasn't bad, i enjoyed it. i would have enjoyed it more if there were more girl groups though (i thought the nct x mx x got7 performance was unnecessary). but most of the times it's not about mnet not inviting these groups, but the companies thinking it's not worth it to send them there if they're not going to win (looking at you sm). i would have loved to see the wonder girls. but oh well.

That's an interesting point too. A lot of netizen comments (with high upvotes) were skeptical at why MAMA has been taking place in Hong Kong so many times considering that now the Sky Dome has been built and can accommodate more people

I've seen elsewhere that a lot of this is due to a focus on streaming/outside the region views, though? I mean, MAMA2016 trended worldwide on twitter for most of the day. Interested to see if they can cobble together a more cohesive look at actual views other than just traditional tv.

I had the red carpet playing and I was out before it that even started, lol.

Aside from standard SM (Tae/NCT/Exo), JYP (Got7) and Dean, there weren't artists I cared about enough to keep myself up and watch. I knew from the lineup the show wouldn't be fun to me, and I wasn't gonna be interested. I tried to at least watch Taemin, but I assumed he would be performing closer to the end with Exo.
