Actress Go Ara’s exclusive contract with SM Entertainment has come to an end.

On November 30, SM Entertainment released the news, saying, “While we don’t know the exact timeframe, her exclusive contract has ended.” Currently, Go Ara has not signed on with another agency. Go Ara reportedly become a free agent after completing the filming for the upcoming KBS2 drama “Hwarang.”

Meanwhile, Go Ara first came under the spotlight when she received first place for SM Entertainment’s Teen Model Contest back in 2003. She then debuted as an actress through the drama “Sharp #1.”

1. [+4,682, -53] I really thought she'd stay with SM for life...

2. [+3,377, -106] Go Ara and Lee Yeon Hee match SM the best though..

3. [+2,334, -41] She's leaving SM??????????..

4. [+1,879, -70] She'd be better off staying with SM or at least moving to C&C

5. [+1,561, -85] Might as well stay if she has nothing going for her

6. [+542, -18] It might be better for her to move to a professional acting agency if she wants to be successful as an actress. SM has a really bad eye for picking dramas, they have no infrastructure for their actors.

7. [+547, -34] I never thought she'd leave SM, what a surprise. Most of her fame is due to her agency anyway, she should just stay.

8. [+460, -13] SM does seem to be pretty bad at managing their actors though... I heard SM tried to turn down her role in 'Reply' ㅜㅜ

9. [+457, -20] She still lacks 2% of something, probably why she's not hugely popular

10. [+470, -48] Yeah she's pretty but that's it..

1. [+503, -21] Hul, I really thought Go Ara and Lee Yeon Hee would stay with SM for life... isn't it better for the two to stay in SM anyway? It's an idol agency so they have a lot of income to work with so it doesn't matter if these two have flop dramas or movies, SM will continue to land them roles... Other acting agencies throw out their actors who flop in dramas.

2. [+447, -39] She's not that great of an actor, she really needs a big agency like SM to back her up...

3. [+393, -34] Sticky situation... so many pretty stars lately, and she's not an exceptional actor either....

4. [+39, -11] Your typical flower without a scent, poor actor... SM's been training her since she was little but she hasn't improved, probably why they aren't renewing with her

5. [+26, -0] She's not that bad at acting... but maybe she just has a bad eye for picking dramas? She can find another role like Najung if she finds another character that brings out her charms. I think it's great that she left, it'd be better to work with an agency that specializes in actors and can pick better dramas for her

6. [+24, -2] I'm glad she left. She wasted her pretty face on their lack of support. When she hit daebak with 'Reply', SM needed to have supported her more. She'd probably be doing better now if they had. She's older now and it's better for her to join an agency that manages actors only.

7. [+23, -3] It'd be better for her to find an acting agency. SM doesn't give her any good opportunities, they're too busy giving that trouble maker Sulli lead roles in movies.

8. [+22, -8] Yoona, Go Ara, Lee Yeon Hee... well that breaks the top 3 beauty trifecta of SM...

Damn, I wonder who will replace her in SM's visual trifecta.

I'm curious why she didn't look for a new agency prior to not renewing her contract, unless the decision was SM's but that would surprise me.

I think this is actually a good decision for her. Having the backing of a good agency offers a certain comfort but I feel like SM never did a good job of pushing their actors. They seemed more content with pushing their idols than their actual actors. I wonder what Lee Yeon Hee will do?

maybe she wants to work solo/with no agency. Is that possible in k entertainment?? are there any examples of that?
She's been so many years working since so young, she must have made enough contacts/networking

I think Yoo Jae Suk used to not have an agency before signing with FNC not long ago.

Yoo jae suk is in another level, it's hard to make an example of him... idk why he even has an agency with the amount of offers he probably gets a personal agent and a small team could be enough??? idk, if even he eventually signed with an agency then that's just how the industry works, you cannot not have one

I'm not surprised, I was a huge Ahra stan for years and I know how SM fucked her over and over again.

I think she is waiting in the impact the her drama could have, so she can have better offers .

sm never did anything for her despite the fact that she was signed for more than a decade to them and i wonder why wasn't she signed to sm c&c in the first place?

instead of getting their female idols roles in dramas, they could have pushed her more or lee yeon hee.

anyway, she was awesome in phantom detective. i watched it last week.

sm's original visual queen. she was a talented teen actress and her popularity resurged after reply 1994. her last project was a movie w/ lee jee hoon.

lee yeon hee. like an user above said, she's also part of "SM's visual trifecta" alongside go ara. unfortunately, she's had more misses than hits in her career, but i really recommend miss korea. it's her best drama to date.

her next drama will air in 2017. it's pre produced and filmed in paris

I hadn't even heard of her until Reply 1994, I can't imagine her ending up at an agency that will do worse...

I loved Go Ara in Reply 1994. She is so pretty and I like her acting. I hope her new drama does well and she gets more offers for different agency so she can pick the best one for her career.

I hope that Hwarang is a notable success because there are so many people in it I like such as her, Park Hyungsik, Park Seojoon, Minho, and Taehyung.

(but so far from the teasers and everything it looks kind of dopey and amateur/low budget D:)

She's probably better off without SM, their forte is managing idols not actors or other types of musicians.
