After taking a trip to the ‘90s with their last single “1 of 1,” SHINee returned to the present with “Tell Me What To Do” on Tuesday (Nov. 15). The sleek track was one of five new songs off of the group’s newly released 1 and 1 album, the extended follow-up to October’s 1 of 1.

Vibrant in its nuanced styling, “Tell Me What To Do” combines the soulfulness of R&B, a genre that SHINee’s drawn on since their debut single “Replay," with the ingenuity of electronic music. The song plays up SHINee’s layered vocals, alternating between gentle harmonies and soaring choruses. The hypnotic track utilizes steady percussion and toned-down EDM elements to straddle the line between ballad and mid-tempo dance track, both of which are frequent styles found throughout SHINee’s lengthy discography.

“Tell Me What To Do” alternates between soaring builds, rhythmic raps, and a soft-spoken, pleading chorus. Acoustic guitar strumming accompanies much of the song, as SHINee joins in on a growing trend many other popular K-pop acts, including BlackPink and Taeyeon, have also utilized as of late. And while the lyrics succeed in conveying desperation and confusion amidst a tumultuous relationship, it is the strong vocal performances from the members, particularly Onew and Taemin’s sonorous belts, that makes “Tell Me What To Do” SHINee’s most emotive single of the past few years.

The track is the first SHINee single produced by Yoo Young Jin since the group worked with him on their 2010 megahit “Lucifer.” Proving Jin and SHINee are a great combination, the sleek, modernistic sound of “Tell Me What To Do” propelled SHINee to the top of iTunes’ K-pop chart; the other songs on the reissued album also appeared in the top 10. Like the single, the rest of the songs on 1 of 1 take a step back from SHINee’s dance sound and instead focus on vocals and slowed down rhythms, ranging between the romantic “Wish Upon A Star,” the sultry “Rescue,” the Onew co-written ballad “Beautiful Life.”

SHINee Stun With Shimmering Electro-Pop for 'Tell Me What to Do': Watch

Written by Jeff Benjamin /

The boy band makes a late play for one of the best K-pop songs of the year with the new single from their repackaged '1 of 1' album

SHINee brought back '90s boy-band nostalgia with their "1 of 1" single earlier this year, but their latest serves modern-day, electro-pop brilliance with "Tell Me What to Do."

The new single, which is the lead single off a repackage of the quintet's 1 of 1 album, boasts a subtle-yet-surging electronic production that backs the band's heartfelt croons as they look to their lover to advise on a bruised relationship. As expected, the guys are showing off some major vocal chops—particularly on the chorus with Jonghyun delivering chill-inducing belts—but it's all done in a way that one can easily sing along with, which has always been a major strong point in any SHINee single. Despite being released late into the year, the blend of melancholy and hope is helping "Tell Me What to Do" make a last-minute run to be named one of the best K-pop singles of 2016.

The accompanying video's color scheme pairs nicely with the song's vibe as the guys don muted colors among vibrant settings and backgrounds; the opposite of the "1 of 1" video with its bold clothes and white background. The video appears to showcase the members fighting over one girl with their realities offering different takes on various scenarios, perhaps as a metaphor to the many ways one can view and understand a relationship. Yet among all the different shots—that includes Taemin getting intimate with his love interest, Minho and said girl bursting into flames in a car, and Key driving in that car unharmed—the final shot showcases all the SHINee guys and their lady love posing together with the car.

"Tell Me What to Do" is one of five new tracks on the 1 of 1 repackaged album. Stream the new material, along with the album's original nine songs, below via Spotify: (OP Note: idk how to link to spotify, but I strongly suggest you look the album up!)

Thanks for posting this, OP!

What Key said about Indonesian Shawols' hijab in the CNN interview was so sweet. He also mentioned it in the talk part during the concert itself.

I'll just leave this here:

I like that their music (as well as solo efforts) are being appreciated by others. I'm strong in my belief that even if Western culture isn't into boybands, SHINee has music that would "make it" here.
