Date: 2016-11-18 08:19 pm (UTC)The way music publishing works is that there are two models of royalties; mechanical and publishing. A % of the whole album sale goes to the 'artist' this may be approx $1.80 per album sale this mechanical royalty is usually what is used to pay back an advance; an advance is usually paid by a record label to the artist to facilitate the recording, marketing, producers and living exspenses as part of releasing an album. Until this advance is 'paid off' the mechanical royalty goes to the record label once the advance is paid off then this royalty goes to the artist.
In Bigbangs case, they would also be getting a publishing royalty for where they are listed as songwriters for specific songs as well, this publshing royalty always goes direct to the artist. So every time the song is played on the radio, tv or they have a performance they get this royalty as well.
Bigbang also will probably be taking home a portion of the merchandising and touring profits as well - from what I can tell their contract is potentially more aligned with the western music industry model more than the eastern music industry model which treats artists more like employees (paying them a base salary then a % of profits)
