Hello and welcome to the third OMONA DISCUSSION post! I know it's been a while since we've had one. I was busy stanning Lay #buylosecontrolonitunes thinking of new topics that we can talk about. If you want to talk about a certain topic next time just post it in the comment section or message me!
For reference, click here and here for the first two OMONA DISCUSSION posts.
Today, I want to talk about concepts. Concepts play a HUGE part in K-Pop. Unlike western stars, who rock the same image for years, (most) K-Pop artists like to change their looks and image every time they release a new song. You have groups that go from innocent to sexy, from boy next door to beastly emos, groups that just go completely crazy or do pole-dancing. Sometimes the concept and the song don't even have anything in common. Below is a list of my favorite concepts over the years with a short explanation. You can also go and take a look at these two articles over at soompi, where they compiled the most unique boy- and girlgrop concepts. You can also read which unique girlgroup concepts netizens like the most over at koreaboo.

TOP 5 CONCEPTS (in no particular order)
Military concept for Genie by SNSD
Why I like it: I personally think that Genie was their prettiest concept. The outfits, the hair, the dance, the MV(s) - they all looked gorgeous during that era. It was sexy but not too sexy and appropriated for their age at that time.
80s concept for I Feel You by Wonder Girls
Why I like it: I'm not a huge fan of the song, but the whole retro concept was well done. The song sounds straight outta the 80s, same goes for the outfits and the MV.
Kill Bill concept for Kill Bill by BEG
Why I like it: Again, the whole Kill Bill theme was well made and went like a golden thread through the MV, the performances and the teaser pics. I also like how they basically recreated the whole movie into a 7:30 min long music video.
Alternate Universe/Celestial power concept for Mama by EXO
(posting the chinese version because we all know that M is the superior group)
Why I like it: The MV did a great job of portraying each members' celestial power, a concept that K-Pop hadn't seen before.
Emo concept for Heartbeat by 2PM
Why I like it: Eventhough I personally think that the hair and the outfits were... nagl, the whole emo concept was something different from their previous fun and beastly men image. The concept suits the theme of the song, and the dance (the pyramid) is still iconic.
Now tell me, OMONA: What's your favorite K-Pop concept? Link your faves down below!

Really, my favorite concept is whatever Wonder Girls is managing to pioneer at any given time because they usually are.

Date: 2016-10-31 02:45 am (UTC)And despite how goofy Mama is, it really was an imaginative concept. And I find myself jamming to it now and then haha "Jukgo, jugigo ssaugo oechigo! Igeon jeonjaengi aniyaaaaaaaaa!!!" I only ever listened to Exo-K sorry, not sorry OP ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I want more mahou shoujo/power ranger type concepts! Preferably with cheap CGI and stilted action scenes to stay true to their roots.

Date: 2016-10-31 02:53 am (UTC)that's probably why bts's whole hyyh trilogy was one of my favorites as well, despite all the over the top theorizing that went on behind it. bs&t and all it's art references (https://www.reddit.com/r/bangtan/comments/578xhc/art_history_101_bangtan_edition/) was also a pretty cool read. apparently bang shihyuk studied something called aesthetics at SNU? that explains alot lol. as someone majoring in film i can definitely appreciate the involved "stories" of exo's superpower world and bts's hyyh/wings worlds, despite being an obvious gimmick to entice fans lol.
other then those... anything by orange caramel honestly (catallena!! COPYCAT!!!!). got7's just right for the colors and the tiny things theme - it's the reason just right was my favorite from them so far (if only they'd go somewhere with the flight log stuff!). twice's whole halloween-ish kind of dress up theme going in all their releases (loa w. zombies, cheer up with the movies, and TT with their
disney movieshalloween costumes). i'm obviously just naming my faves now lol, but like the reason i became a huge seventeen fan is cause of mansae, the theme itself is so overused (schoolboy crush on girl) but they fit the concept so well and really made it their own (and also the mv is really beautifully shot). also, honorary mention to shinee's sherlock, b.a.p's one shot and vixx voodoo doll (which still needs a 19+ rating imo but was brilliant regardless). and 2ne1's hate you just cause i'm taking an animation course right now.wow, i could probably name a thousand more honestly, but honestly lately alot of kpop mv's are really stepping it up with the ~aesthetics~ and whole concept building in music videos. obviously it's just a gimmick with most groups in order to make a name for themselves out there, but i can appreciate a group that goes out of their way to make it fun for people to not only listen to the music, but enjoy the music video too. this is actually one of the fields im considering for a career so i might have went overboard with naming them... hopefully i'm understanding this discussion right cause now as i read over what i wrote i think i just named my favorite music videos based on the way they were shot lol.

Date: 2016-10-31 03:03 am (UTC)But I guess I'll have to highlight WG Tell me and Nobody. Tell me because I got into to them with that song and I just thought it was so much fun, if it's a fun concept with a nice bop then I'll defitly like it. An nobody.... I just, it'll never ocurr to me that a Kpop group would do something so typicaly of the US 60's music with the look, it was really, at that time I found it really innovative, and their recent music, they just nailed every concept
But I liked so many concepts in all this years, I guess I'll just write the first that comes to mind, like an exercise of the one that left a strong impression in my memories I guess, Aside from WG
Mirotic
Genie (like OP)
Growl/CMB of exo
Again and Again- 2pm
U go girl
Fire
HUH from 4 minute
How come of BEG (idk if this counts, because idk how I would explain this concept, ugly clothes but I really liked the song and dance and I remember how impressed I was with Narsha in the MV, I saw every live performance of that song I could found at that time)
Here's the MV

Date: 2016-10-31 03:20 am (UTC)Just Right (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrdk3IGcau8)/Adorable Tiny Boyfriend Concept by GOT7 - my very first bias group. this video is what got me into kpop. I think I watched this straight for a whole week. I know that the boys don't like this concept and I don't think they'll be going back to doing this any time soon, so I'm just.... :(
Russian Roulette (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QslJYDX3o8s)/Pastel Coloured Murder Concept by Red Velvet - I love so much of what Red Velvet has to offer in terms of concepts, but this might be my favorite. I've always been into all things cutely morbid, so this was right up my alley.
Why So Lonely (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYGODWJgR-c)/Pastel Coloured Misandry Concept by the Wonder Girls - The cinematography! The makeup! The looks! The 70's vibe! Everything about this was beautiful and made me want to wear pink eye shadow for a week.
Bae Bae (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKD03uPVD-Q)/Whatever the hell this is by Big Bang - all their MADE era MVs are just so amazing to me. this is my fave. it's gorgeous and dream-like. their stages for this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h2EVD8hkkI) were also just as fun to watch. being a production designer for yg must be so fun.
Doom Dada (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAoME_aMm1w)/Art Hoe Concept by TOP - the wanna be art hoe/movie geek in me fell head over heels for this weirdo with this. how could one not? I get giddy every time I watch this.
Very Nice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-wFp43XOrA)/Cute Boys Being Cute/What A Concept! by Seventeen - I obviously had a weakness. Sorry GOT7 I have moved on. How amazing is their dance choreography. Apparently they said that they're inspired by musicals and it really shows. Those suspenders were such a look! #ripmingyushair

Date: 2016-10-31 03:29 am (UTC)This is one of my absolute favorites because at first you have no idea what's going on but when you get to the end it's really sweet:
I pretty much love all of VIXX's concepts but robot!VIXX in Error has a special place in my heart for some reason:
Also iconique futuristic dystopian queens
Badass f(x)
SuJu's Western concept for Mamacita was pretty great
Honestly this video is pretty silly but I think the whole "monsters created in a secret government lab" concept is cool
Honestly I could embed a million more but here are some other random ones:
Cryogenically frozen kings defrost to save music, occasionally shirtless - Fantastic Baby
Nerdy guy woos girl with help of his cool friend - Don't Go Home
Everyone in UKISS is very sexy - Quit Playing
Red Velvet are dolls in a factory - Dumb Dumb
Lim Kim is a cat - Awoo
Baek a Yeon is done with dating - So-so
Giriboy is dating a gold digger - Hogu

Kill Bill of course.

Date: 2016-10-31 03:44 am (UTC)and rather than individual concepts i love stuff like exo's superpowers that show up in different cbs. i know they're embarrassed by it but it's so cool they better never stop it. rv's dual concept is awesome too and sm better bring back the double concept and double title tracks before bp fans claim it.

Date: 2016-10-31 03:48 am (UTC)so yeah idk the ~concept name but i like that A LOT. they're one of my fav groups bc their sound is so perfect imo
LOVE ladies code newer sound and galaxy is my fav out of the two tracks
again w the dreamy sound. i love the visuals, styling, bgm and sojung's smokey vocals. typically i prefer husky voices over sweet ones like ayeon (even tho i appreciate talent either way)
(obsessed w them + would eat up a track of them burping LOL)
every single thing about exid's up and down concept. everything (except that ugly haircut LE had -___-). i love the original and the knock offs like doligo and chewy chewy. this song belongs in the kpop bop hall of fame. i love this concept and everything it gave birth to in kpop
to throw a boy group in here: everything vixx does. more specifically everything cha hakyeon does on stage since idk he might super secretly suck. vixx are concept gods and even their bad ones are too good for me

Date: 2016-10-31 03:51 am (UTC)also exo's superpower concept is superior
