In just a few months, a new year will begin. It will bring not only exciting new promotions from our favorite K-Pop groups, but possibly heart-wrenching news.

In the last few years, we saw the contract renewals of several beloved idols including Super Junior, who also gained their own independent label known as Label SJ, and Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls, 2PM and among others.

However, some groups chose not to renew this year, with some members either parting ways from the group and agency. Aside from Youngji, KARA disbanded following contract expiration of Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara earlier in 2016. Then, 2AM unofficially disbanded after only Jokwon remained with the label — save Changmin whose contract was not nearing its end date yet.

sistar-girlsday.jpg

A month later, 2NE1 would lose a member after Minzy decided not to renew her contract with YG Entertainment. In May, Jia left miss A while in June, 4MINUTE would be the next girl group to disband after only Hyuna chose to remain with the agency while the other members parted ways.

And as of October 15th, BEAST‘s contract has expired with Cube Entertainment despite denial from the agency that they have officially parted ways, though a renewal has not yet been signed.

But there’s more.

More contracts for idol groups are nearing their expiration, and fans are on the edge of their seat to learn what will become of them.

Of course, the following are approximate lengths of their contract as idols are not allowed to reveal its contents to the public. Expiration of their contract are also assumed on their debut and whether they initially signed a 7-year contract, an average for idol groups.

Sistar and GsD would be stupid to disband/leave label.
Miss A and 2NE1 are dead. So is ZEA

I'm just glad Nine Muses died with dignity via sleepless night - Always taking chances, always rallyng, always putting a voice out there for 20 something women in control of their sexuality - and before anyone menions lip 2 lip that is nine muses A, totally different groups.

Sistar will likely re-up, GsD should too - speaking of, why was their 'perfect stage' CM never posted? it's FLAWLESS! - while Rainbow was done so dirty and Miss A is up in the air. Maybe they'll resign but just individually?

Sistar will likely not disband. But I could see Dasom leaving simply because she seems more geared towards being an actress (and Starship obviously not making the waves for her). Hyorin and Soyou got it made In Terms of solo support and Bora stays booked somewhere (plus she doesn't seem to have a certain pathway).

i don't think dasom will leave, she seemed to be enjoying their latest stages the most out of all the members and i think she mentioned a while ago she can't give up on being an idol just yet because she still likes it? (don't pin me on it, but i think i read that)

Nice op, we've had a similiar post earlier this year and i was planning to post a updated version is december. You beat me thehe

Girls day, sistar, infinite, cnblue are all safe.
The rest, idk. But we all thought 4minute would resign, now look what happened to them.

Arent soshis contracts also up next year? Iirc they only resigned until next year to make it a decade.

Can they do short contracts? Like sign up for 2 or 3 years instead of 7? I feel like some infinite peeps might not want to still be in a boyband after they come back from the army but who knows. Gyu is the one nearing enlistment so sometimes I wonder if he still wants to be learning synchronized dances in his 30s. I picture Dongwoo wanting to settle too.. lol at the things I think about. But he's younger so it's not the same xD

A little OT, but I wish YG would do the mature and professional thing by just announcing 2NE1's disbandment. I've been disappointed so much, I've already accepted this as true. Just release the statement.

That aside, I do wonder the future of these groups. I think everyone will be surprised next year.

I know YG has a track record for not keeping their word but I do wanna point out that we all thought Wonder Girls was done for back in 2013/2014 when Sohee and Sunye left. We were all wrong, thank goodness, so maybe 2NE1 has a chance?

Yep, I'm pretty sure Jo Kwon is the only one still on JYPE and Changmin is in Big Hit. And also I don't think the group is disbanded just each of them are focused on doing their things but for what the members say, at some point some day, they will do a release together.

2nd gen really is going :(

its funny to think that while 2nd gen is slowly disbanding, 1st gen is slowly getting back together/still going strong. gives me hope that i'll see some of my 2nd gen faves together 10 years down the road (if i stay in kpop that long lol)

only ones i see resigning to stay in the group for at least another year or two is infinite, girls day, sistar, and maybe cnblue

Cause if any of those three go I'm going to need a month at minimum to recover. I know Wonder Girls basically does whatever they want cause they helped JYPE become the powerhouse that it is, but when they 'retire' from showbusiness I am going to COLLAPSE.

I didn't think 2AM actually disbanded? I thought it was an indefinite hiatus situation. I mean, they celebrated their debut together on V App a couple months ago.

same. The members don't seem to want 2AM to disband, but they are also not working anymore like your usual kpop group that promotes together.

this is rlly depressing to see in a way cause all these groups had or were about to debut when i became a fan of kpop.
we rlly are reaching the end of an era.

im so disgustingly emo about 9m. they're so talented and brought so many good singles. they deserved so much better.

Rip all my fav girl groups TBH. 4minute already bite the dust. Nine Muses is a shell of themselves at this point, which is sad because they never hit it big. And let's not mention the others.

I don't really see why any guy due for the army in the next couple years would come back as a boy band idol member after the army TBH, especially when most of them are gonna already be well into their 30s . the might aspire to do something different other (going solo or even settle with a family for example).

Being a yg stan either makes you perpetually upset and angry, or just immune to all the bs that happens in the Kpop industry. BB, 2ne1, Akmu, winner, and so on come back once every blue moon, so the bgs might as well be in the army, and gg might as well have disbanded, it would feel the same. Lol

I think it depends on the group? I can totally picture some male idols wanting to end the idol career after the enlistment, but you have also Suju or Shinhwa who are still promoting despite being pretty old for idols or Eli who still works as an idol despite having a family. We haven't seen many active idols enlisting, so it's hard to tell what's going to happen

I don't mind it if my favorite groups disband with dignity when they're a bit too old to be boybands and girl groups but I hope that they still remain with their (hopefully unshitty) agencies doing other things and making a decent living. I get that not every member is a stellar singer or dancer, but there are other things they can do within a company besides being a recording artist. They can choreograph or write songs or help train/manage new kids. IDK, I just don't want them to be unemployed and super washed up :( I hope their respective companies give them that kind of opportunity.

So many girl groups thrown under the bus because of bad management :( sistar will definitely resign but idk enough about gsd to know if they will. They seem to be doing more solo stuff lately. Miss a will disband and rainbow probably too. Those groups deserved more. 9 muses i think will stay together as long as kyungri stays since shes the only one popular among the general public. If she decides to leave 9muses is over. Poor sojin and geumjo. They just joined...
